FIELDS/SPECIALIZATIONS in PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology is a huge topic and conveying the depth and breadth of the
subject can be difficult. As a result, a number of different fields of psychology
have emerged to deal with specific subtopics within the study of mental
processes and behavior.
Educational Psychology. This deals with the evaluation of learning
and emotional problems of individuals in schools.
Clinical Psychology. An integration of science, theory and clinical
knowledge for the purpose of understanding, preventing, and relieving
psychologically based distress or dysfunction and to promote subjective wellbeing and personal development
Industrial Psychology.
The scientific study of employees,
workplaces, and organizations. Industrialorganizational psychologists
contribute to an organization's success by improving the performance and
well-being of its people.
Guidance and Counseling. The process of helping individuals
discover and develop their educational, vocational, and psychological
potentialities and thereby to achieve an optimal level of personal happiness
and social usefulness.
Forensic Psychology. This applies psychology to the law and legal
proceedings.
Engineering Psychology. The study of how people and machines
are related and how to improve this relationship.
Psychopharmacology. The study of drug-induced changes in mood,
sensation, thinking, and behavior.
Consumer Psychology. Deals with the activities directly involved in
selecting, obtaining, and using products, services, and ideas to satisfy the
needs and desires, including decision processes that precede and follow
these action.
Environmental Psychology. An interdisciplinary field focused on the
interplay between humans and their surroundings. The field defines the term

Social Psychology. The scientific study (imperical method) of how


people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by the actual,
imagined, or implied presence of others.
Psycho-pathology. The study of mental illness, mental distress, and
abnormal/maladaptive behavior.
Child Psychology. Focuses on the mind and behavior of children
from prenatal development through adolescence. It deals not only with how
children grow physically, but with their mental, emotional and social
development as well.
Adolescent Psychology. Addresses the psychological issues and
interests of adolescents which involves looking at the issues, stages and
various influences that a child experiences throughout their development
into functioning adults.
Adulthood Psychology. Deals with the series of stages which move
from a period of exploration to one of stabilization.
Old Age Psychology. The science to understand, control and predict
health related behavior and mentality of human being in the later life.
Developmental Psychology. This involves the science of
physiological, cognitive, and social development and the factors that shape
the behavior from birth to old age (i.e. a persons life span).
Personality Psychology. The study of individual differences and the
development of personality theories and analyses for assessing personality
traits.
Sensation.
The
function
of
the
lowlevel biochemical and neurological events that begin with the impinging of
a stimulus upon the receptor cells of a sensory organ.
Perception.
The mental process or state that is reflected in
statements ( like "I see a uniformly blue wall"), representing awareness or
understanding of the real-world cause of the sensory input.

Stress & Coping. Stress is any event or situation that makes
heightened demands on a person's mental or emotional resources while
coping is refers to the process of managing taxing circumstances, expending
effort to solve personal and interpersonal problems, and seeking "to master,
minimize, reduce or tolerate stress" or conflict.
