The LORD approved of Abel and his offering, but the LORD didnt approve
of Cain and his offering. So Cain became angry and was disappointed.
Genesis 4.4-5
Incidents like this from scripture always make me scratch my head. Why didnt the LORD
approve of Cain? Why did the LORD approve of Abel? I understand why Cain was angry and
disappointed; been there, done that! What could this story from Genesis truly mean for us
today? Perhaps a better look at the story in Genesis chapter 4 would shed some light on the
meaning.
As the story tells, Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a tiller of the land. One anthropologist has said that this is a story of herders vs agriculturalists; the story reveals a tension between the nomad
shepherds and the growing agricultural revolution that paved the way to urbanization. According to this interpretation, God apparently sided with the nomads.
The story itself tells us that, In the course of time, Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the
ground, and Abel for his part brought of the firstlings of his flock, their fat portions. (verses 3, and 4a)
At first glance, there might seem no tension, but I have added firstlings in italics to emphasize a possible
difference. Does the tension between Cain and Abel lay among the intentions of their offerings? Obviously,
Abel gave of his prime stock the firstborn of his flock. Cains offering, on the other hand, did not necessarily come from the first fruits of his work. Is motivation the reason for the LORDs rejection of one and not the
other, or is this a random acceptance and unacceptance?
Without resolving the tension, the writer of Genesis tells us that one was approved, the other not; and that
the disgruntled one, Cain, sought revenge. I will not try to resolve tension where a resolution does not exist;
I will only say that sometimes life is just this way, isnt it?
Sometimes, without reason, it seems that God approves or disapproves of our sacrifices, or decisions, in life.
We seek to find answers, and none are found. Why does God accept the prayers of this one who prayed for
her loved one to be healed, while this other one seems to talk to a deaf God? Could it be that this story from
Genesis seeks to teach us the old adage, If at first you dont succeed, try, try again? I dont have definitive
answers.
That which I do know: Cain reacted with vengeance against his brother not against God. One theologian
says that all civilization is based on this premier vengeful act of scapegoating. That is something that we
may be able to address, but in a different way: Why, if this is the first vengeful, hate-filled death, that God
punished, do human beings continue to reenact it even today? Why do we continue to exact vengeance on
those who offend us? Who are our scapegoats today? Why not move toward grace and compassion for one
another?
In those moments of discernment, we may never know that answer to any of these questions, but we can
be a Christian example that ends the cycle of violence. Lets be the hands and feet of Jesus!
Peace,
Pr Tim

FREE MONTHLY
BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENINGS
As part of our emphasis on taking care of our physical well being, along with our spiritual well
being...the Outreach and Evangelism Ministry Team has scheduled an opportunity for Blood Pressure Checks
for members who wish to participate. These will be done in the library, during Fellowship Hour, on the first
Sunday of the monthJuly 3 & August 7. You will also receive a handy pocket / wallet sized tri-fold card to
keep track of your readings. The checks will be performed by members of Zions who are nurses - and will be
coordinated by Angela Mack. Feel free to see her if you have any questions!
Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for your grant for the mission of Redeemer. We are so grateful. You
have blessed us and your gift will help so much as we are preparing to start our Summer
Youth Program. As you may know we serve the children of this neighborhood who, in the
summer, do not receive the food they need as they usually receive it during the school year.
We hope to serve at least 50 children for breakfast & lunch. They also enjoy Bible lessons,
crafts, music, outdoor activities and lots of loving care for 8 weeks, 5 days a week. You are a part of that love
and caring. We thank God for you.
In Christ,
Marge Reas for the Redeemer Family
Dear Friends at Zion Lutheran,
We are so blessed to receive your donation. Thank you! We are grateful you have chosen to invest in
Bible translation through our ministry...The Bible translator [for the Iaupronounced eye-youlanguage
group in Papau, Indonesia], Janet Bateman would appreciate your prayers as she presses on to give these
people the entire New Testament and portions of the Old Testament in their own language. We long for
them to know the God who loves them and be able to be blessed in reading His Word in the language they
understand.
With gratefulness,
Richard & Brenda Harman
