the sigma rating of a process, the product quality improves and costs
go down. Naturally, the customer becomes more satisfied as a result.
Six Sigma is philosophy. It is an outlook, a way that we perceive and
work within the business world around us. Essentially, the philosophy is
one of working smarter, not harder. This translate to making fewer and
fewer mistakes in everything we do from the way we manufacture
products to the way we fill out a purchase order. As we discover and
neutralize harmful sources of variation, our sigma rating goes up.
Again, this means that our process capability improves and defects
(mistakes) go away.
Such force flows from the simple, but stunningly sharp objective of Six
Sigma: Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve & Control (D M A I C) every
one of the processes in the Company in such a way that none of them
yields more than 3.4 defects out of every 1 million units of output. With
breath taking clarity, Six Sigma is telling companies in clear,
accurate, mathematical terms how good or, more likely, bad their
Quality-levels are, how much they can improve, and what progress
theyre making on that journey. And the Six Sigma strategists are
leveraging this knowledge to consummate exciting improvements in
Quality not just on the shop-floor, but all over their organisation.
S.C. Bajaj, place our progress at 308,537 defects. Or, a lowly Two
Sigma.
