Key: SW = Students will; TW = Teacher will; SWBAT = Students will be able to

Contains: Prior Knowledge/Building Background/Previous Learning
Activating prior knowledge of converting fraction to decimal to percent. Building background of taking surveys.

Content Objectives
SW be able to find relative frequency of
given data. SW collect their own data and
find relative frequency of their data
(fraction to decimal to percent).

Language Objectives
SW listen to classmates (listen and
repeat, listen and do as data is written,
and interactive listening as they survey).
SW collect data from classmates, such as
favorite food, school subject, pet, or
musical group (Celce-Murcia, n.d.).

Meaningful Activities
TW explicitly teach relative frequency. In
pairs, SW survey classmates, carefully
collect data, and determine relative
frequency. Representative samples of a
population, as well as biased and unbiased
samples will be examined.

Review/Assessment
SW prepare a speech evaluating the
collected data of classmates (listen and
do). SW narrate the survey process and
describe results. TW video speech and
evaluate speaking and pronunciation.
Partner will listen and repeat partners
analysis of data (Celce-Murcia, n.d.).

SW be able to prepare a speech to be

video-taped, sharing a narrative of their
survey. SW describe the relative frequency
of the data. Partner will have the listening
responsibility to repeat partners analysis
of data (Celce-Murcia, n.d.).

TW initiate pre-listening conversation

regarding surveys and topical questions to
be surveyed, activating prior knowledge
and building background. SW will practice
careful while-listening as they survey
classmates. SW show critical analysis of
their partners speech through postlistening and repeating partners analysis
of data (Miller, 2003).
SW read and write on meaningful tasks of
relative frequency, representative samples,
and biased/unbiased samples.

Wrap-Up:
TW and SW view and evaluate speeches. Pronunciation of key vocabulary will be assessed: Da-ta, Re-la-tive fre-quen-cy, Sam-ple,
re-pre-sent-ta-tive sam-ples, Bi-ased sam-ples, Un-bi-ased sam-ples, Sur-vey, pop-u-la-tion.
Partner response to listening will be assessed.
