rock formation being drilled. The process does not rely on weight-on-bit and
torque to mechanically break the rock. Steel particles are introduced into the
drilling fluid at a point downstream from the rig pumps, not to interfere with the
normal operation of the rig pumps. These particles then flow down the drill stem
and are accelerated through the nozzles of a specially designed fixed-cutter bit,
striking the formation at high velocities. The particles and cuttings are
circulated to the surface by the drilling fluid where a shot-extraction device
captures the particles for re-injection.

Drilling
Drills boreholes using a process called spallation. The process starts by applying
a high-intensity fluid stream to a rock surface to expand the crystalline grains
within the rock. Above a temperature of 374.12C and a pressure of 221.2 bars,
water vapor and liquid water can no longer be distinguished from each other in
terms of their density. In this supercritical state, water is less polar, has no
phase boundaries any more and is a good solvent for non-polar gases like oxygen.
Under these conditions fuel and oxygen can be mixed without any bubble formation.
When the grains expand, micro-fractures occur in the rock and small particles
called spalls are ejected. The process is accelerated by several factors including
inherent stress in the rock formation. Potter Drillings technology differs from
prior air based techniques in that it uses hot fluid rather than air to spall
rock. Because spallation occurs in a water filled borehole, Potter Drillings
technology can be used to drill to depths required for universal EGS (12,000 to
30,000 feet).

Self-actuated valve that periodically interrupts the flow of fluid. Stopping the

GDY tasked Snubco to design a Downhole valve that can be used to isolate the
formation pressures form the upper wellbore. The valve will allow us to trip in /
out, cement, work-over and fracture as per normal operations. Valve will be seated
in the 9 5/8" casing, below "pipe light" depth.

Involves deploying a fibre optic cable along the wellbore and pulsing a laser
along the fibre. The pulse is continuously reflected along the fibres length and
the reflections recorded to output a sequence of temperature measurements along
the length of the fibre. Temperature variations are used to infer flow variation
in the well. The system can be deployed permanently or temporary basis.

An aerogel is directly derived from a wet gel in a process that replaces the
entrained liquid phase with air. If the gel is formed from a water phase, the
resulting semi-solid is called a hydrogel, and the water must be exchanged with
organic solvent prior to drying. If the gel is formed within an alcohol phase, the
resulting semi-solid is called an alcogel, and can be dried directly. This is
accomplished by increasing the temperature and pressure of the solvent phase
inside of the gel structure beyond its critical point. This supercritical
extraction condition lowers the surface tension between the liquid and the solid
pore surfaces so that depressurization of the system at temperatures above the
critical temperature leaves the pore structure filled with gas.
