PLASTIFORM Flexible Permanent Magnet

Material, energy product 1.4 MGOe, has
a cured (vulcanized) nitrile rubber binder
containing oriented barium ferrite
magnet material. This product possesses
a strong resistance to demagnetization,
and is easily fabricated using standard
tools such as knives, drills, lathes,
punches, mills, grinding wheels, etc. This
magnet product is manufactured in
two types:
1013 is particularly suited for fabricated
parts, while 1030 is designed for use in
permanent magnet DC motors and other
applications requiring a greater flexural
capability.
Both types are available in rolls, sheets,
strips or as fabricated parts, magnetized
or not magnetized.
PLASTIFORM flexible magnet materials
combine physical and magnetic
properties and offer the following
features and benefits.

Flexibility and resiliency

Design innovations and automated
manufacturing techniques are more
practical using PLASTIFORM magnet
material because it does not chip or
shatter.

p. 7.3 February 2003 Rev. B

Ease of fabrication

Cost reduction

PLASTIFORM flexible magnet materials

offer inherently low tooling costs and can
be readily machined, cut, slit, punched,
drilled or milled into simple or intricate
shapes.

Greater design latitude and more efficient

production methods made possible by
the unique properties of PLASTIFORM
magnets contribute to reduced costs in
product development and production.

Multi-pole magnetization

Superior magnetic and dimensional

tolerances

PLASTIFORM magnet pieces or strips are

available with more than one pole on
each surface, offering increased design
flexibility. Multi-pole magnetization
permits greater control of flux density,
allowing flux patterns to be held closer to
the magnet surface.

Conformability to application
surfaces
Because of their flexibility, and a combination of hardness, tensile strength and
elongation, these flexible magnets adapt
to the shape of the surface to which they
are applied. In fractional horsepower
motor applications, this property ensures
a snug fit between magnet material and
housing, thereby reducing the air gap,
minimizing reluctance and maximizing
operational efficiency.

PLASTIFORM magnets have a magnetic

tolerance of plus 6%, minus 2%.
Thickness tolerances can be held to
within .003 inches*. In addition, these
superior magnetic and dimensional
tolerances allow more exacting control
of performance.

PLASTIFORM Quality
PLASTIFORM is manufactured using upto-date statistical methods and
documented statistical data. Customers
can rely on the proven quality of
PLASTIFORM bonded magnetic materials
for a variety of applications.

PLASTIFORM 1013 and 1030

Magnet Material
Continuous strip capability
The flexibility of this material allows it to
be supplied in continuous strips. This is
advantageous to the DC motor manufacturer both in terms of production cost
and performance. Motor strips can be cut
precisely to length, with all magnetic
poles exhibiting precisely the same
magnetic properties. In DC motors, this
condition enhances smooth motor
operation and minimizes brush wear.
Continuous strip capability is also
advantageous to the manufacturer who
fabricates parts which may be used as
automated feed systems.

Applications
Because they successfully combine high
coercive force and residual induction with
flexibility and ease of fabrication,
PLASTIFORM magnets are now being
used in a wide range of electro-magnetic
circuit and equipment applications.
Typical applications include:
Stators for fractional horsepower
motors
Rotors for brushless DC motors
Reed relay actuation in switches,
keyboards, counters and sensors
Magnetic focusing systems for TV tubes
Multi-pole magnetic rotors for timer,
stepper and clock motors
High performance latches
Magnetic pick-ups for electronic ignition
and braking systems
Magnetic clutch in computer disc pack
drive
Snap-action devices for use as power
switch contacts
A primary reason for the material's
acceptance into these markets has been
its adaptability to automated handling
systems.
The automated equipment used to insert
PLASTIFORM permanent magnets into
fractional horsepower motor and alternator housings typically consists of the
following components:
1. The magnetizing fixture which is built
into the inserter machine to magnetize
the magnet prior to insertion
2. A power unit designed to provide electrical energy to the magnetizing fixture

p. 7.4 February 2003 Rev. B

PLASTIFORM flexible magnets offer money-saving advantages in PM motor stator and brushless
motor rotor applications through automated magnetizing and insertion equipment.

3. The inserter machine itself, consisting

of an injector arm to push the material
into a circular die cavity, and a plunger
that completes formation of the
magnet material and inserts the
formed part into the motor or alternator housing
The magnetizer-inserter equipment
shown at the top of the page illustrates
the principles of automated production
using PLASTIFORM magnets. These
principles are easily applied to modern
manufacturing processes and are
designed to save production time and
drastically reduce rejection rates without
sacrificing performance. The magnetizerinserter and other application equipment
can be fabricated by a machine builder,
or in the manufacturer's own tooling
department. Arnolds Applications
Engineering Service is available to provide
the technical assistance necessary to get
such equipment built and into operation.

Availability
The basic manufactured form is a roll of
sheet stock which can be easily fabricated into parts of the desired shape.
PLASTIFORM permanent magnets are
fabricated in accordance with customer
specification. The material can be
produced in virtually any size or shape,
including continuous length strips. It is

available in either a magnetized or

nonmagnetized state. The number of
poles per surface and magnetization
pattern are determined by the application
needs of the customer.
For information on other Arnold
PLASTIFORM magnet materials, refer to
the appropriate product information
sheets.

Sampling/prototyping/tooling
Samples of PLASTIFORM magnet
material 1030 for prototype evaluation
can be supplied for design feasibility
studies in standard, unmagnetized 3"x
24" strips. Such samples can be
machined, slit, punched or cut to the
final part dimension. Magnetized
samples and samples in non-standard
sizes can be provided on a lot charge
basis. Requests for quotes on nonstandard or magnetized sample parts

Magnet Material
Prototyping for DC PM motors and brushless motors with
PLASTIFORM flexible permanent magnet material 1030
PLASTIFORM Flexible Permanent Magnet Material 1030 consists of barium ferrite oriented in a cured
(vulcanized) nitrile rubber binder. Combining the magnetic properties typical of barium ferrite with
flexibility and excellent magnetic and dimensional tolerances, 1030 material provides a wide range of
benefits in DC PM motor and brushless motor applications. When prototyping with a 1030 material,
the following parameters determine if the magnet can be consistently inserted into a motor housing
with optimum performance results:
(1) Flexing required of the magnet (flexibility ratio)
(2) Magnet strip length and length tolerances
(3) Motor housing inner diameter tolerances

Determining flexibility ratio

The magnet material used in a motor housing must have enough flexibility to be inserted without
breaking. This capability is determined by the magnet material's flexibility ratio. The latter is calculated
by dividing the inner diameter of the motor housing by the thickness of the magnet.
Flexibility
Ratio

minimum inner diameter motor housing

maximum magnet thickness

The following chart suggests the magnet thicknesses that can be used in conjunction with various
motor housing inner diameters based on flexibility ratio. For example, a ratio of 7 indicates that a
magnet having a thickness range of .030" to .190" can be inserted into motor housing whose inner
diameter is at least 7 times greater than the magnet thickness. Further experimentation to determine
the practical ratio for a particular motor may be needed, depending upon the specific requirements of
the motor (Figure A).

Magnet Material
Determining magnet strip length
Because of their flexibility, PLASTIFORM 1030 magnets adapt to the shape of the surface to which
they are applied. In DC motor and brushless motor applications, this property permits a snug or
compression fit between magnet and motor housing without bonding or gluing. The result is
minimization of the air gap, provided that the correct length of magnet strip has been used. Proper
strip length may be calculated as follows:
Magnet strip length = Nominal inner diameter of motor housing minus the nominal magnet thickness
times times design guide (K), i.e.;
SL = (Dh - tm)K
Magnet Strip
Thickness
Range

Ratio

1.02

.191" to .280"

8.5

1.01

.281" to .375"

9.5

After the nominal length has been calculated, insertion tests should be run to verify that the calculated
length is correct or to determine that it needs to be modified. Then, two additional tests must be
made to confirm that the butt joint, where the two ends of the magnet strip meet after insertion,
allows a proper fit between magnet and housing.
This testing should be carried out as follows:
(A) Insert a magnet strip with the prescribed maximum thickness and maximum length into a motor
housing with minimum inner diameter.
(B) Insert a magnet strip with the prescribed minimum thickness and minimum length into a motor
housing with maximum inner diameter.
(C) Observe whether the following design goals have been met:
1. The magnet is in uniform contact with the inner diameter of the motor housing.
2. The magnet will not move in the housing.
Figure B shows the typical butt joint variation with an ideal or typical strip length resulting in a Y"
configuration.

Tech TipsPLASTIFORM 1030

Magnet Material
The importance of testing relative to proper magnet length stems from the fact that excessively long
magnet strips may create so much compression at the butt joint that the magnet material is pushed
into the air gap, possibly causing armature interference.
On the other hand, magnet strips that are too short could cause armature interference by moving
away from the inside wall of the housing. The use of strips of insufficient length may also contribute
to axial movement.
The motor housing inner diameter tolerances must also be considered in determining the required
magnet strip length and thickness tolerances.

Magnet strip dimensional tolerances

Close thickness tolerances result in less magnetic flux variation in the air gap, leading to more
consistent motor performance.
Close thickness and length tolerances also aid in producing the proper compression fit between
magnet and motor housing.

Magnet Material
Fabricating 1030 magnet samples
1030 Sample material is available in standard sheets 3" wide x 24" long, in thicknesses of .030",
.060", .090", .125", .156, .186", .250", .312" and .375". Finished parts can be fabricated from
these sheets in a machine shop using standard tools such as knives, guillotine cutters, band saws,
drills, punches and grinding equipment.
The length of the finished magnet part should be cut from the web direction or the 24" length
dimension of the sheet material (Figure C). It should not be cut from the cross-web direction or the 3"
dimension.
In order to assure a proper fit, it is also recommended that the length dimension be cut over-sized,
then ground to the previously determined tolerances. When grinding 1030 magnet material, a 50 grit
open-coat aluminum oxide or silicon carbide abrasive wheel works well, run at a surface speed of
approximately 7,500 ft./min.

A simple hand insertion tool can be made in a machine shop to provide uniform insertion of the
magnet strip into the motor housing (Figure D).
The magnet strip is hand-loaded into the wide opening of the inserter or strip former. The inserter is
then placed on top of the motor housing. The curled magnet strip is pushed down the length of
the inserter and into the motor housing by the plunger (Figure D). An arbor press can be used to aid
this procedure.

PLASTIFORM Flexible Permanent Magnet

Material, energy product 1.6 MGOe, has
a cured (vulcanized) nitrile rubber binder
containing oriented barium ferrite
magnet material. This product possesses
a strong resistance to demagnetization,
and is easily fabricated using standard
tools such as knives, drills, lathes,
punches, mills, grinding wheels, etc.
1033 is designed for use in permanent
magnet DC motors and other applications requiring a greater magnetic
capability. It is available in rolls, sheets,
strips or as fabricated parts, magnetized
or not magnetized.
PLASTIFORM flexible magnet materials
combine physical and magnetic
properties and offer the following
features and benefits.

Flexibility and resiliency

Design innovations and automated
manufacturing techniques are more
practical using PLASTIFORM magnet
material because it does not chip or
shatter.

p. 7.14 February 2003 Rev. B

Ease of fabrication

Cost reduction

PLASTIFORM flexible magnet materials

offer inherently low tooling costs and
can be readily machined, cut, slit,
punched, drilled or milled into simple or
intricate shapes.

Greater design latitude and more efficient

production methods made possible by
the unique properties of PLASTIFORM
magnets contribute to reduced costs in
product development and production.

Multi-pole magnetization

Superior magnetic and dimensional

tolerances

PLASTIFORM magnet pieces or strips are

available with more than one pole on
each surface, offering increased design
flexibility. Multi-pole magnetization
permits greater control of flux density,
allowing flux patterns to be held closer to
the magnet surface.

Conformability to application
surfaces
Because of their flexibility, and a combination of hardness, tensile strength and
elongation, these flexible magnets adapt
to the shape of the surface to which they
are applied. In fractional horsepower
motor applications, this property ensures
a snug fit between magnet material and
housing, thereby reducing the air gap,
minimizing reluctance and maximizing
operational efficiency.

PLASTIFORM magnets have superior

magnetic properties with the energy
product of 1.6 MGOe and the residual
induction of 2550 gauss. Thickness tolerances can be held to within .003
inches*. In addition, these superior
dimensional tolerances allow more
exacting control of performance.

PLASTIFORM Quality
PLASTIFORM is manufactured using
up-to-date statistical methods and
documented statistical data. Customers
can rely on the proven quality of
PLASTIFORM bonded magnetic materials
for a variety of applications.

*Premium tolerance

PLASTIFORM 1033
Magnet Material
Continuous strip capability
The flexibility of this material allows it to
be supplied in continuous strips. This is
advantageous to the DC motor manufacturer both in terms of production cost
and performance. Motor strips can be cut
precisely to length, with all magnetic
poles exhibiting precisely the same
magnetic properties. In DC motors, this
condition enhances smooth motor
operation and minimizes brush wear.
Continuous strip capability is also advantageous to the manufacturer who
fabricates parts which may be used as
automated feed systems.

Applications
Because they successfully combine high
coercive force and residual induction with
flexibility and ease of fabrication,
PLASTIFORM magnets are now being
used in a wide range of electro-magnetic
circuit and equipment applications.
Typical applications include:
Stators for fractional horsepower
motors
Rotors for brushless DC motors
Reed relay actuation in switches,
keyboards, counters and sensors
Magnetic focusing systems for TV tubes
Multi-pole magnetic rotors for timer,
stepper and clock motors
High performance latches
Magnetic pick-ups for electronic ignition
and braking systems
Magnetic clutch in computer disc pack
drive
Snap-action devices for use as power
switch contacts
A primary reason for the material's acceptance into these markets has been its
adaptability to automated handling
systems.
The automated equipment used to insert
PLASTIFORM permanent magnets into
fractional horsepower motor and alternator housings can consist of the
following components:
1. The magnetizing fixture which is built
into the inserter machine to magnetize
the magnet prior to insertion
2. A power unit designed to provide electrical energy to the magnetizing fixture

p. 7.15 February 2003 Rev.

The inserter equipment shown at the top
of the page illustrates the principles of
automated production using
PLASTIFORM magnets. These principles
are easily applied to modern manufacturing processes and are designed to
save production time and drastically
reduce rejection rates without sacrificing
performance. The magnetizer-inserter
and other application equipment can be
fabricated by a machine builder, or in the
manufacturer's own tooling department.
Arnold Applications Engineering Service
is available to provide the technical assistance necessary to get such equipment
built and into operation.

Availability
The basic manufactured form is a roll of
sheet stock which can be easily fabricated into parts of the desired shape.
PLASTIFORM permanent magnets are
fabricated in accordance with customer
specification. The material can be
produced in virtually any size or shape,
including continuous length strips. It is

available in either a magnetized or

nonmagnetized state. The number of
poles per surface and magnetization
pattern are determined by the application needs of the customer.

Magnetic Plate Mounting System
Product Availability Guide
Magnetic plate backing is a special
adaptation of Arnold's flexible magnet
technology to the needs of today's flexographic and letterpress platemakers and
printers. Essentially, it involves the use of
magnetic force to attach printing plates
and rubber die blankets to steel-surfaced
press cylinders.
The following is a list of products that are
currently in the magnetic plate backing
line:

1035
The original magnetic plate backing
product, it consists of a .030" thick
magnetic layer with a .0025" thick layer
of steel foil covered with black, vulcanizing rubber adhesive. The product has a
composite thickness of .033". B-1035 is
sold in 18"-wide by 25'-long rolls.

1044
This versatile product is currently being
used in a wide variety of flexographic
applications. Corrugated printers have
found 1044 particularly beneficial in
mounting rubber and photopolymer box
dies, pre-mounts and pull bands on letter

p. 7.18 February 2003 Rev. B

and flexo presses. The product is also

designed to provide easy mounting of
rubber die blankets and glue pads. B1044 consists of 18"-wide material with
a thickness of .030" or .050". Available
in 25' rolls, it does not contain steel foil.
Flexographic printing plates can be
bonded to the magnet using commercially available sticky back or contact
cement.

1046
1046 was developed for platemakers and
printers who want all the advantages of a
magnetic mounting medium, plus the
option of grinding plates for caliper
control. It adapts well to the mounting of
photopolymer plates and to such new
mounting concepts as cushioned sticky
backs. The product consists of a .030"thick magnetic layer laminated to a layer
of .0025" steel foil, for a composite
thickness of .033". Sold in 18"-wide by
25'-long rolls, 1046 can be bonded to
plates with commercially available sticky
back adhesives, allowing it to be reused.

Description
PLASTIFORM Permanent Magnet
Materials are rubber barium ferrite
composites manufactured in sheets, strips
and individually cut pieces. Magnetic
properties are generated by preferentially
orienting ferromagnetic barium ferrite in
a stable binder. It is highly anisotropic and
possesses an unusually strong resistance
to demagnetization.
1037 material is a specially formulated
magnet product designed for use in latch
and similar applications. The high degree
of conformability exhibited by this
material allows it to match various pole
piece configurations and yields optimum
performance when sandwiched between
pole pieces.

PLASTIFORM 1037
Magnet Material
Typical effect of temperature on
magnetic strength
In many applications, the operating
temperature of a magnet may be much
higher or lower than the average room
temperature. The effect of temperature
on the magnetic properties of
PLASTIFORM materials should be
considered where such conditions exist.
The residual magnetism (Br) of
PLASTIFORM magnets will decrease at
approximately 0.1% per degree
Fahrenheit above 70F (0.19% per
degree centigrade above 21.1C) and
will increase at 0.1% per degree
Fahrenheit below 70F (0.19% per
degree centigrade below 21.1C). The
magnet becomes weaker as the temperature is raised and stronger as the
temperature is lowered. The value of the
coercive force (Hc) also changes, but this
is significant only where a high demagnetizing field may be applied at low
temperatures, such as in DC motor applications.
Changes due to temperatures are not
permanent, but are reversible.
Consequently, the original magnetic
values are recovered upon return to
room temperature. Both ceramic and
flexible barium ferrite magnets are
subject to this effect.

PLASTIFORM 1316 and 1317

Magnet Tape
Pressure-sensitive adhesive, high energy level magnetic material
16 oz/in2 minimum holding force
Easy application with pressure-sensitive adhesive backing
Easily cut with scissors or knife
Adheres and remains flexible at low temperatures
Available in two thicknesses and in widths from 1/4 in. to 23 in. (6.3 mm to 584 mm)

The high energy magnet tape is then

permanently magnetized with multiple
north and south poles along its length,
providing a minimum holding force of 16
ounces per square inch.
The strong holding power of
PLASTIFORM Magnet Tape allows its use
in relatively narrow widths where it
combines economy with exceptional
performance capabilities.
PLASTIFORM Magnet Tape can be bent,
twisted and flexed without loss of
magnetic energy. The product conforms
readily to irregular surfaces without
cracking. It will not lose its magnetic
strength when dropped or struck.
PLASTIFORM Magnet Tape is, indeed,
permanently magnetic.

Self-sticking, pressure sensitive

adhesive
PLASTIFORM Magnet Tape has a hightack, pressure-sensitive adhesive layer on
one side, protected by a peel-away
backing. The adhesive will adhere to a
wide variety of surfaces including most
plastics, wood and metal. The nonadhesive side may be used to hold small
ferrous objects such as small screw drivers
and other tools. The product also saves
time by holding small parts during
assembly. PLASTIFORM Magnet Tape is a
versatile holding material, which can be
used effectively on both metal and
nonmetal surfaces.

Clean, safe handling

The magnetic side of PLASTIFORM
Magnet Tape is specially coated to ensure
clean attachment. This coating also resists
the external physical conditions that
might otherwise result in adhesive
bonding between magnet and application surface. Newly painted surfaces
should be allowed adequate drying time
before application of magnet tape.

Typical holding force without steel

backup
35

Temperature resistance
PLASTIFORM Magnet Tape retains its
flexibility even in cold weather. The
product performs well, indoors or out, in
hot or cold climates. Extensive testing at
temperatures ranging from -40F to
160F (-40C to 71C) has documented
the broad range of capability of both the
adhesive and the magnetic holding force.

Application
PLASTIFORM Magnet Tape is easily cut
with a scissors or knife. Adhesive
mounting surfaces should be free of dirt,
grease, oil and solvent. Following
placement, the magnet tape should be
pressed down firmly with a roller.

When removing any bubbles from the

viewing area, gently tap the metal

diaphragm. Do not exceed a pressure of
.25 psi on the metal diaphragm as
excessive pressure will damage viewer
construction.

How to use the viewer

Viewers found to be defective because

of materials or workmanship will be
replaced if returned within a period of
30 days from date of purchase. Viewers
damaged through improper handling will
void the warranty.

1.To disperse the solution, hold viewer in

horizontal position and shake vigorously in a left-to-right motion.
2.Gently tap the thin metal diaphragm
(with viewer in vertical position) to
remove any bubbles from the viewing
area.

Viewer can be used to check magnetized pole patterns on a variety of configurations, such as the ring
magnet at the right.

3.Remove minor amounts of water

which may be on back of diaphragm.
4.For greater sensitivity, place viewer on a
flat surface for 30 seconds before use.
