2016 Parade: Webster Groves A City For All Seasons

Monday, July 4, 10 a.m.

Begins at Lockwood & Selma, ends

at Elm & Glendale (Memorial Park)
Sponsored by Lions Club
of Webster Groves
Parade Route
The parade travels a two-mile route
through Webster Groves, drawing a crowd
of thousands of spectators with more than
80 units.

The parade begins at Lockwood and

Selma and travels west on Lockwood,
turns south on South Gore to Big Bend,
turns east on Big Bend, and turns one last
time south on Elm Avenue. The parade
ends at Memorial Park (at the intersection
of Elm Avenue and Glendale Road).
Marshals
With the years theme being Webster
Groves A City For All Seasons, who
better to serve as grand marshal than

Steve Templeton? Steve is the chief

meteorologist at KMOV Channel 4 and a
proud Webster Groves resident. We are a
city for all seasons and sometimes all in
one day, he said. We are also honored to
have volunteers from Webster Groves
Masonic Temple to serve as parade
marshals again this year.
Parade Judges
Judges for the parade are:
Charles Fischer, owner of
Charlies Hair Design, which has been
in business in Webster Groves for 67
years.
Angel Venegoni, hospital
administrator for Webster Groves
Animal Hospital, which has been in
business for over 50 years.
Ryan Whittington, director of
operations for Seniors Home Care,
which has been in business in Webster
Groves for over 28 years.
Judges select parade units to receive
awards in the categories listed below.
Awards will be given at the Aug. 2 city
council meeting.
Parade Awards
A first place (Best) and an honorable
mention (Outstanding) winner will be
awarded in the following categories:

Safety
Of course, safety is of paramount
importance, but parades have inherent
risk, so its important that parade
participants and spectators do all they can
to help. The parade draws thousands of
spectators.
With regard to parade units, several
safety measures are in place and
enforcement will be without exception. No
throwing of water balloons or large super

soakers will be allowed from any parade

unit or spectators. Each sizeable motorized
unit will have wheel walkers, who keep
the path clear in front and on the sides
of the unit. Parade participants will not
be allowed to throw candy or other items
from a moving unit; however, walkers may
hand the items to spectators on sidewalks.
Violators should be reported to a parade
marshal or police officer.
Along the parade route, parents and
adults should keep close track of their
children and prevent them from running
in front of a parade vehicle to get a piece
of candy or trinket. Remain on the curb or
behind it. There will be no sales of water,
ice cream, etc., on the street once the
parade has started and 10 minutes prior
to start time until the conclusion of the
event. Safety is everyones job. Please help
by doing what you can.

Webster Groves Lions Club Carnival & Barbecue

July 1-4 on Lions Athletic Fields at Memorial Park (Elm & I-44)
See Schedule of Events on page 2 for hours of operation

For the 91st consecutive year, the Lions

Club of Webster Groves will hold its annual
summertime carnival and barbecue. This
tradition serves, first and foremost, as
an opportunity for families, friends and
neighbors in the community to come
together in a safe, pleasant and patriotic
setting.
Lots of Rides and Food
This year promises to be one of the
biggest and best July 4 events ever in
Webster Groves! The Fairgrounds will be
filled with more than a dozen colorful, fun
and classic amusement rides, including
a $5 million attraction provided by PBJ
Happee Days Shows, Inc. There are two
nights of unlimited ride wristbands: July 1
and 3. The huge Lions Club Food Tent will
again be one of the most popular places in
town for all four days. Lions Club members
will be grilling and serving freshly prepared
and reasonably priced food, such as
full and half slabs of ribs, pork steaks,
chicken, rib tips, ribeye steaks, bratwurst,
hamburgers, hot dogs, baked potatoes,
corn on the cob, baked beans and more.

Hundreds of Volunteers
For the Webster Lions July 4 carnival and
barbecue to occur, Lions Club members
and their families and friends sacrifice
their holiday fun to work virtually nonstop for a full week on the Fairgrounds.
From set-up through clean-up, Lions Club
members and volunteers expend more
than 6,000 volunteer hours. Everything on
the July 4 Fairgrounds is coordinated and
supervised by the Lions Club.
The Webster Lions donate substantial
funding toward the fireworks display
on July 4, and also commits significant
financial support to the reconditioning
and restoration of the Lions Athletic Fields
following the July 4 festivities.
Webster Lions Generosity
Since 1926, the carnival and barbecue
has been the Lions largest investment
of time and money and the clubs major
annual fundraiser. As soon as the carnival
ends, the Lions begin planning for the
next year. The Webster Groves Lions Club
Accommodations/Rules:
Refrain from placing blankets/tarps
on the ground before the day of fireworks.
Ground covers, if left too long, can damage
the park. To protect the grounds, blankets
may be removed.
Coolers or outside food and drink are
not allowed on the grounds.
Due to insurance restrictions, no
outside booths or strolling vendors are
allowed unless coordinated through the
Webster Groves Lions Club.
Ambrose Way will be closed from June
30 through July 6.
Moss Field (football stadium) is closed
during the event. No one is allowed inside
the stadium to view the fireworks.

Outstanding Community Involvement

The Lions Club of Webster Groves
is involved all year in the planning and
organizing of the Webster Groves Annual
Community Days/July 4 Celebration. This
dedicated effort began in 1960 when
Webster Lions moved its summertime
carnival and barbecue from Labor Day to
July 4 as part of a then-new local event
called Webster Groves Community Days.
The subsequent 55-year partnership
between the Lions Club and Websters
overall July 4 festivities has been a special
collaboration for the community and
people from all parts of the metropolitan
region.

is proud of the many ways it supports its

community, but is only able to do good
work because of the direct and dedicated
support of the very community in which it
lives and works. Each year in May, the Lions
award numerous $1,000 scholarships
to promising high school graduates in
Webster Groves. Webster Groves and the
Lions have a true synergy the ability to
accomplish something greater together
than anyone could do alone.

Bring Glasses to the Fairgrounds

An ongoing project of the Webster Lions
and other Lions Clubs is the collection
of old eyeglasses and sunglasses for
recycling and reuse by people in Central
and South America. Everyone is urged to
donate old eyeglasses and sunglasses at
the Lions Club Booth in the Fairgrounds
midway.
