AS THE FOUNDER INTENDED

Shotokan karate was brought from Okinawa to
the Japanese mainland by Gichin Funakoshi in
1922. It grew through several Japanese university
dojos and spread across the globe, becoming the
most widely practiced karate style in the world.
One of Funakoshis early discipiles, Masatoshi
Nakayama, taught our current Shihan (Master)
Takahashi, who teaches and grades in Tasmania
twice a year. Our Sensei Stacey Kirmos, started
training with Takahashi in 1972. This gives TSKF
University of Tasmania a proud direct link to the
founder of our style.
EITIQUETTE
- The care you take with your dogi and the tying
of your belt are a reflection of your respect for
the dojo
- Take your shoes off and leave them at the door
- Always bow when entering and leaving the dojo
- When arriving bow and say Oss! to the most
senior belt in the dojo
- Listen to your instructor and say Oss! to let
them know you understand
- If you arrive late, warm up and then kneel in
seiza, waiting for the instructor to invite you to
join the class
WHAT AGE IS BEST?
It depends on the child, but generally around 10.
We do have children as young as 6. The important
thing is they can focus for the lesson, listen and
not distract others.
