In Vitro Fertilization invented in 1981, is a complex series of procedures used to treat

used to treat infertility. It is the most effective form of assisted reproductive technology.
According to experts although it gives couples a chance to have a baby, it is to increase the risk
of harm to both the mother and the baby.
The process of In Vitro Fertilization starts with a process called superovulation where
fertility drug is given to the mother to boost egg production. During this step, the woman is said
to produce several eggs apart from the normal production of one egg per month. A minor surgery
called follicular aspiration is done to remove the eggs form the womans body. The last stages are
insemination and fertilization. In this process, the sperm is placed together with the best quality
eggs and wait for a few hours for the egg to be fertilized. It is then injected into the womans
womb after 3-5 days of fertilization. These steps may sound normal but it is subjected to dangers
and risks and are also associated with moral issues.
Little did we know that during the process of IVF, multiple fertilized eggs are injected
into the mothers womb, having it as an experimental set up on which eggs would live and which
would not. When all of the eggs survive, only one or two could remain depending upon the
decision of the parents. Although not fully developed, the eggs that were able to survive are
flushed out of the mothers body depriving them of the chance to live. It also possesses the risk

of multiple birth when more than one embryo is placed into the womb. Carrying more than one
baby, it increases the risk of premature birth.
With more problems arising from this issue, couples who are experiencing this problem
should be aware of the risks brought about by this process. Awareness on this matter should be
considered by the ones who plan to undergo the process. The government should hold seminars
regarding this matter to inform them of the pros and cons of the process as many are unaware of
the dangers it might cause them. There are also organic herbal remedies sold in the market which
are found to help in the increase of production of eggs and sperms. Another method is called
GIFT or the Gamete Intrafallopian transfer. It is similar in many ways with IVF, the only
difference is that the insemination and fertilization process happens inside that fallopian tube
rather than having multiple set ups on laboratories. Lastly, this process does not involve science
nor anything it has to do with painful and expensive treatments. Adoption is also an option for
couples who are wanting to have a child of their own.
With all the alternatives just around the corner, couples are more likely not to go into IVF
treatment rather, they are more likely to engage into moral and organic processes in conceiving a
child given all this information.
