Colorado Avenue
Colorado Avenue tells the story of Dollar-Hanna, dealing with humiliation, shame and respect.

When Hanna is little, she and her mother are forced to leave their home island in the Bothnia
archipelago after Hannas father drowns at sea.
Hanna becomes a hired girl at the Smeds house. She starts to save money to go to America. In
1893, at the age of 18, she travels to the Unites States and Colorado, determined to make money
in the Great West. Ten years later in 1905, Hanna returns to her home village Siklax with her son
Otto and daughter Ida, but without a husband. With her American dollars she buys a parcel of
rocky land and opens a country store. The store becomes the village centre and the local people
begin to respect the industrious Hanna or Dollar-Hanna as they choose to call her.
When prohibition takes effect in 1919, Otto starts his career as a smuggler. Soon he becomes
the King of Containers, with detective Hoxell fervently trying to catch him. Dollar-Hanna feels
ashamed again. She cannot forgive Otto for choosing the criminal path. Otto is also accused of
killing his helper Dhli-Johan.

Dark Floors
The Lordi Motion Picture
Sarah is an autistic little girl whose father is worried about her health. Concerned for her, the
father sees a removal from the hospital by force as the only option. An elevator break-down prevents a smooth exit and renders them trapped with others. Yet the incident is only the beginning
of a descent into nightmare. As the doors open, the hospital appears mysteriously deserted. When
mutilated bodies are found, creatures from a dark world start a frightening attack. It soon becomes clear that the survival of the group may rest solely on the little girl.

Pete Riski

Pete Riski (b. 1974) is a quiet guy who was born and raised in the northern part of Finland.
In the cold winters there was nothing else to do but to watch telly and see every movie that played
in the local theater. As a teenager, he made lots of short VHS horror movies and music videos for
local bands. Couple of years in an art school led to a
career in directing commercials and music videos.
His music videos are something different from what people
are used to,and his commercials are a combination of
different visual looks and interesting stories. Music is
always one of the key things in his works. A decade in the
business and lots of different kinds of awards later, he is
still the same quiet northern guy as in the beginning.
So let the reel do the talking.

Berry. He steals money in order to buy a drum kit, gets caught and is sentenced to prison.

k o t i

The main character of the movie is Juhani, a boy haunted and oppressed by a traumatic childhood
experience. After being bounced between a number of foster homes for six years, Juhani ends up
in a boys home, at a place called The Island. The Island is run under the laws and regulations of
Olavi Harjula, the superintendent of the place, who is ruthless in his administration. Besides the
seven boys who have ended up at the home and Harjula, the only other inhabitants on the Island
are Harjulas wife and their two daughters, along with Tyyne who is in charge of the livestock and
the cooking. The isolated community is a world of its own.
The movie forces the viewers to ask themselves how long you have to keep paying for past
mistakes and deeds. When can you forgive yourself and be set free? Or can you? And are you
responsible for other peoples actions?

It is 1918, and the Civil War is raging in Finland; the Social-Democratic Reds are ghting the
Senate-supported Whites. Private Aaro Harjula returns from Germany and joins the non-socialist
Whites. He is shocked to see how the Whites treat the defeated, rebellious Reds. He witnesses Red
female soldiers being group-raped and executed without a trial.
One of the women escapes execution, and Harjula decides to take her to a nearby military
tribunal. When Harjula is transporting his prisoner in a rowboat, she tries to escape, causing the
rowboat to capsize. Both Harjula and the female prisoner are forced to swim to a desolate island.
On the island, her anger gradually dissipates, and a strange friendship develops between the
two. They are rescued by a shing boat and transported to the mainland. Harjula believes it
would be best to take her to the court where a good judge will surely make a just decision.
But in the end Harjula must make a decision that will be unlawful and against the orders given
to him he must follow his heart. He wants to save the woman from death by any means necessary.

Stormheart

M y r s k y

The father of a Finnish family visiting the crumbling Berlin Wall rescues a cute puppy, Stormheart, and takes him back to Finland as a pet for his daughters. No one in the family knows anything about the dog, not even its breed.
Little by little, the mystery of Stormheart unravels, and the dogs new owners learn more about
him. They nd out that Stormhearts parents had served as guard dogs at the Berlin Wall.
In the lm, drama, comedy and tragedy are created by the mere breed-typical behaviour of
the Caucasian Shepherd. Pearl, the 7-year-old daughter of the Finnish family, takes the puppy
under her wing. In the care of the tender-hearted family, trained only by little Pearl, Stormheart
grows up with no rules or boundaries. In six months, the dog that has grown up to the size of a
bear undertakes the task of removing all dangers, threats and obstacles from the path of Pearl,
his little protg. And Pearl, in return, loves Stormheart unconditionally.
Stormheart is a great animal story for schoolchildren and their families; it is a lm for all
people who love animals.

It is where Finlands fate will be decided. General A. F. Airo

Finlands defences on the Karelian Isthmus break and Soviet troops advance with an overwhelming advantage in manpower and military equipment. The Finns have been beaten. Guerilla tactics
in the forests are no longer enough, and some other solution must be found to contain the unprecedented offensive.
Tali Ihantala 1944 recounts the events of the largest battle in the history of Scandinavia
through ve short stories. The defensive victory was a miracle. How was it ever achieved?
The lm tells about the failed attempts of the summer of 1944 to achieve the impossible, stopping a greatly superior enemy and the nal efforts to avert a defeat that seemed certain. This epic
lm deals with the miracle of Ihantala through the perspectives of ordinary people. Soldiers had
to exhibit an unbelievable capacity to endure the inhumane harshness and brutality of war. But a
soldier had a job to do. That is what this lm deals with: men at work.

The Visitor

M u u k a l a i n e n

The story takes place in the rst half of the 20th century. The setting for the lm is an isolated,
run-down farm in the Finnish countryside where a 10-year old boy lives with his mother. The
boys father is serving time in prison but still has a strong hold on the family.
One rainy evening a visitor arrives. A man who has been wounded by a gunshot brings a note
from the boys father. They let the man hide in the stable.
Slowly the man gets better. He begins to help out on the farm and teaches the boy how to take
care of their horse. The boy befriends the animal, conding his secrets in him.
Gradually the visitor gains the boys trust and the affection of the woman. For the short summer, they all feel as if they are a family.
The summer, however, ends abruptly with the death of the horse, and a long fall begins for all
of them.
The boy has to choose between loyalty to his father and protecting the visitor.

Tuomari Nurmio becomes interested in Finnish tango. Modern Finnish tango puzzles him; it has
no kick, no vigor. He begins his research on how tango came to Finland and what affected the
development of Finnish tango.
Tuomari forms an orchestra, and together they start arranging his old songs into tangos and
rearranging some evergreen tangos.
The orchestra adopts the name Kongontien orkesteri, records the album Tangomanifesti
and performs to a live audience.
Archive material, and footage of Tuomaris research and the arranging and recording of the
music are intercut using the association technique.
The lm follows Tuomari Nurmio and Kongontien orkesteri during the making of the album,
as well as Tuomaris research of the arrival of tango and its history in Finland. The lm is both a
unique documentary about making an album in todays Finland and a profound look by old-timers of the rock generation at a musical genre that was previously unfamiliar to them.

conveys the amazing vitality of punk music and punkers. The do it yourself ethic draws young people to punk the same way it did when this new music style arrived
in Finland. Pelle Miljoona, the great dinosaur of Finnish punk, is still going strong, and band
members celebrate their 50th birthdays on the tour bus. They have released a new album and are
adored by old and new fans alike. Akupunktio is punk. Just like the generation of thirty years ago,
the kids today are drawn to shout their message to the world. But the makers of punk music also
have other goals in their lives. Punks power is wide-reaching.

Shadow of the Holy Book

[

v a r j o

Why are some of the worlds biggest international companies translating an absurd foreign propaganda book into their own languages? Why are they trying to evade any serious discussion
about their motives, and about the grim human rights problems and free speech violations in the
Central Asian country of Turkmenistan?
Shadow of the Holy Book investigates the morality of international companies and the dictatorship of oil-and-gas-rich Turkmenistan. These companies help give the dictatorship the propaganda support that it needs to survive. Turkmenistans dictator, Saparmurat Niyazov, has written
a ludicrous book: the Ruhnama, the Book of Soul, a key tool in the governments subjugation of
human rights and free speech. Yet many international companies give their clandestine support
to the Ruhnama and help suppress the countrys voices of opposition and dissidence in return
for multimillion-dollar business deals.

Arto Halonen

Arto Halonen has directed numerous lms, including e.g. Pavlovs Dogs
(Pavlovin koirat, 2005), Conquistadors of Cuba (Kuuban valloittajat, 2005),
The Tank Man (Tynnyrimies, 2004), The Stars Caravan (Taivasta vasten ,
2000), A Dreamer and the Dreamtribe (Unelmoija ja unikansa, 1998) and
Karmapa Two Ways of Divinity (Karmapa jumaluuden kaksi tiet , 1998).
In 2005he got the Finland Prize, the highest annual prize in the arts given
by the Ministry of Culture and the state. Among other important prizes,
he received the Humanitarian Award of the EU in 1998. Halonen is also
the founder of DocPoint Helsinki Documentary Film Festival.

is a surprising and emotional dive into the world of rhythm an extraordinary trip
to discover the magic relationship between Life and Rhythm. Drum legend Billy Cobham takes
us from the bandstands of the Western world to the primal music of African origin with kids in a
Brazilian community and on to the completely secluded world of musical experiences of autists.
These different worlds are yet connected through music in a mystical and secret way. The relation
between the collective and the individual consciousness becomes obvious when, in a fantastic nal
moment, symbiosis is achieved. Music is emotion. Music is communication. Music is identity. Music
becomes a true universal language to express hope, love, ambition and joy. Sonic Mirror is a lm
full of vibrancy and compassion, authentic and hypnotic from the rst to the very last moment.
