Steps for a Healthier Summer

7. Floss Daily.

9. Make Time to Nap.

More than a quarter of adult Americans fib

to their dentists about flossing, according to a
survey by the American Academy of Periodontology. Flossing daily benefits more than your
dental health; it helps prevent periodontal disease, which has been linked to a host of other
serious health issues. Not to mention, flossing
will make your teeth looking brighter.

If youre like most Americans, you probably

dont get a full eight hours of sleep each night
(even if you do stow your cellphone away
from the bed). Napping for even just 20 minutes can help you feel more rested throughout
the day. And few experiences are more relaxing
and restorative than a nap in the shade on a
summer afternoon.

8. Find a New Night-Time Home for

Your Phone.

10. Laugh it Up!

If you sleep with your phone by your bed,

chances are its caused you to go to bed later or
disrupted your sleep with a new text or alert.
To get a more restorative and healthy sleep,
stop looking at your phone 30 minutes before
going to bed to help mentally wind down,
then keep it in a separate room to eliminate
any disturbances.

You will need only three Tidal Wave plants.

The Red Velour have great color and texture
and make a strong statement. Plant them with
good potting soil into a 10 to 12 inch wide
plastic nursing pot. Place a three-foot metal
tomato cage into the pot. The cage should
be as wide at the bottom as it is on the top.
Now slip the entire plastic pot into a glazed
pot thats about one to four inches wider, and
voila!
Hanging Baskets
Hanging flower baskets bring your plants to
eye-level, where everyone can enjoy their wonderful scents and sights. Add beauty to an otherwise dull porch, wall or rafters. Try planting
succulents for a virtually care-free container
garden. Petunias, calibrachoa and pansies also
make wonderful additions to hanging baskets.
Combination Containers
Who says your container garden can only have
one plant? Get creative and play with different color and texture combinations of plants
and flowers. You can make up your own mix
or search online for combo recipes by other
inspiring gardeners. Mix foliage with flowers
and use a color scheme to build a balanced
and beautiful container.
Indoor Container Gardening
Take your favorite hobby inside. Even if you
have a small apartment, theres no need to rule
out house plants. Find the best place for each
plant, depending on their light requirements.
Dont be afraid to experiment and try different
locations until you find the best spot for your
indoor containers. For sun-loving plants, just
be sure to place them on a windowsill for
maximum light exposure.

With so many options and room
for creativity, container gardening is a trend
thats here to stay. Tap into your inventive side
to build a container garden that brings joy
and wellness both indoors and out. For more

Morning and
Evening
Waking up and shutting down, how
Essential Oils can help.

f you know me at all, you probably

know that I am definitely not a
morning person. I would rather sleep
until noon and stay up until midnight
than see the sunrise in real time.

I used to have a job with regular
hours. For many years, I got up at 6am
to be at work by 8am. When I quit that
job, I thought for sure that my body
rhythms would be stuck in that pattern.
I anticipated being awake at 6am
whether I wanted to be or not.
Much to my surprise, that
did not happen. As soon as I
smashed my alarm clock to
pieces, my body went right back
to wanting to sleep until noon.

Maybe you can
relate. Maybe your career
path is in conflict with
your body clock.
Maybe you were my
co-worker who I
mumbled hello
to over the coffee
machine every
morning at
8:01am. If you are,
I apologize
for my years of appearing to be a poor
listener.

At this point in my life, I do not
have a regular schedule. I do, however,
have to be in my office early in the
morning on a regular basis. I love my
work and thoroughly enjoy my clients,
so that does help make it easier. But
sometimes I still need help to get moving
in the morning.

My favorite options for forcing
the state of awakedness (So its not a real
word. Can I use it anyway?) onto myself

is stretching. This is an easy and extremely

affordable option for everyone. And it
is effective at any time of the day. or
night for that matter. After stretching,
diffusing some peppermint oil helps to
wake up the brain cells. Some other oils
that are great options for getting the
oxygen to the brain include frankincense,
Clarity, and Brain Power blend. Yes, there
really is an oil blend called Brain Power!
If you stop by my office, you can smell a
sample.

What happens in the evening
after a day of invigorating aromas? How
do you shut it all down and prepare to
sleep? Since I got up so much earlier than
my body really wanted to, that means I
have to go to bed earlier than I want to as
well. So how do you
turn it off?There
are some soothing
oils that help with
the routine at
the end of the
day as well. Are
you surprised
I mentioned
essential oils
again? Probably not!
Anyway, the oils that
help me go to sleep
at night are lavender,
cedarwood, orange, and
Roman Chamomile. Valerian is another
great option. Many of these oils are clear
and will not stain your sheets. Put a
couple drops right on your pillow case or
diffuse in your bedroom. You will sleep
peacefully and get quality rest not just
horizontal time.

So once again, oils to the rescue!
Once again, there are drug-free options
for dealing with challenging parts of the
day.

If you are having problems
starting your day or falling asleep at night,
please call me at 559-400-1352. I would
be happy to help you find the essential
oils that work best for you. Sweet dreams!

Five Spice Iced Tea Cocktail

The classic summer beverage, iced tea gets an
Asian-inspired treatment in this recipe.

5 black tea bags
1 tablespoon Simply Organic Five Spice Powder
1/4 cup honey
1 1/2 cups Triple Sec
Simply Organic Cinnamon Sticks, for garnish

Spices and Spirits Make

Summer Sips Shine
(BPT) - Sweet iced tea and sangria are as much
hallmarks of summer as baseball and barbecues. Cocktails are a great way to cool off when
temperatures climb, or they can help heat up any
celebration. If youre looking to add some fresh
excitement to seasonal beverages, spices, spirits and
fun presentations can make summer sips shine.
Here are three tricks to help make your summer
cocktails unique:

Color Your Cocktails

Summer is bursting with color, from lush flowers
and foliage to brighter hues in clothes and even the
rainbow shades of childrens ice pops. Let the bounty of colors inspire your summer cocktails.

Create cheer with bright greens by muddling basil or mint in the clear spirit of your choice.
Fire up your guests with brilliant reds courtesy of
fresh summer tomato juice. Liquefied watermelon
makes any cocktail pretty pink, while crushed raspberries or blueberries add a rich, textured appeal.

Spice It Up
Whether you want to add a zing of heat to the
coolness of a cocktail, or balance the sweetness of

a mixed drink, spices and herbs are a great way to

layer flavors in beverages. Herbs such as basil and
mint are staples for summer cocktails, but experimenting with other spices and seasonings can yield
some memorable combinations.

The heat of chipotle salt can be the
perfect foil for sweet, fruit-based beverages. Cardamom adds an exotic flare to traditional cocktails
like Moscow Mules, while traditional iced tea gets
an Asian treatment with the addition of Five Spice
Powder.

Try these two spice- and spirit-filled
summer cocktails from Simply Organic, producers
of premium-quality USDA certified organic spices
and seasonings:

Watermelon Margarita with Chipotle Salt

Rim
Whats cooler than watermelon on a sultry summer
afternoon? Kicking up the heat with smoky chipotle salt, thats what!

Ingredients:
4 cups frozen watermelon chunks
1/2 cup silver tequila
1/4 cup lime juice (about 3 to 4 limes, juiced)
2 tablespoons cane sugar
2 tablespoons sea salt

Directions:
In a pot over high heat, bring water to a boil.
Squeeze juice from oranges into the water, then add
squeezed oranges.
Add tea bags, five spice powder and honey. Gently
whisk tea and let steep for 10 minutes.
Into a half-gallon pitcher, strain tea through a fine
mesh sieve. Add Triple Sec and serve over ice. Garnish with fresh orange slices and cinnamon sticks.

Playful Presentations
Summer cocktails are all about cool fun, and you
can underscore that theme by serving your unique
summer sips in creative containers. For example,
instead of pouring sangria in a wine glass, try serving it in a clear dessert bowl to show off the bright
colors. Plus, the wide bowl will make it easier to
access and eat the fruit when the sangria is gone.
Serve your spiced ice tea in mason jars with a lemon slice for garnish. Or, queue up your Cardamom
Moscow Mule in a copper mug to give guests the
cooling visual effect of condensation on metal.

The Man Behind

the Smile
by Anglia Walpool

ocal comedy in the Central Valley has

a bit of a face on it and if you know
anything about it, you know that face
is Danny Minch. You can usually spot him in
a crowd by his ever present display of pearly
whites. But it isnt just another dashing grin,
theres a heap of talent behind that dazzling
big smile.

Minch started performing standup
nine years ago at The Starline (now
Strummers) in Fresnos Tower District. And
even though hes considered a bit of a veteran
performer, his comedic reputation continues
to grow.

The well-known local comedian
has performed at the Hollywood Improv (a
premiere comedy showcase and restaurant)
Brea Improv Comedy Club, and Punchline
Comedy Club in Sacramento to name a few.
Danny has also appeared in the documentary
film Monsters of Comedy.

Dannys big break came in 2011
when he was asked to be a sole opener at
Chuckchansi Casino for actor and standup comedian, Brad Garrett. It was a big hit.
The show drew in at least 1,500 guests, since
thats as many seats the theater holds, plus
countless patrons standing against the walls
and doorway.

Danny Minch is by far the biggest
fan of Danny Minch. He loves to make
people laugh and for the most part, doesnt
seem to have any limits. He is very passionate
about his work as a comedian and loves all
forms of comedy.

The actor and comedian is
associated with a number of popular
projects, suggesting that theres much more
behind this mutli-talented comedy genius.
Danny Minch is also notorious for his standup specials and events. He is also the host
of a comedy show on Thursday nights at
Mother Marys Italian Kitchen located at
1345 N Willow Ave in Clovis. He gives new
comers the chance to go up on the mic and
express themselves. There is a microphone

LOCAL ARTS

stand, stage lights and some pretty amusing

comedians. Danny enjoys watching and
mentoring new comedians in to helping
them brake the mold.

Although Danny started late in his
life doing comedy professionally, his journey
began much earlier, in the 5th grade he told
a joke to the class and made the entire class
laugh including the teacher. That feeling of
making people laugh was like a drug to me
so I continued to do it from there, Danny
stated. He is still in awe of the profession he
has chosen.

I spoke with one of his many fans,
Joseph Greenwood, who said of Danny, I
met with Danny Minch for the first time
on the set of Sick Wit It, we were filming
our debut episode and I wanted a top notch
comedian to really make the show pop! I
found some videos of Danny Minch online

10 KNT Media, LLC l The Valley's Nickel l June 30th & July 7th, 2016 l www.thevalleysnickel.com

and was cracking up right away, I knew this

was the guy, so I contacted him and we made
arrangements. From the moment we met he
had a big gracious smile, total professional.
And he nailed his stand-up performance
from the first moment to the last, kept my
crew and I laughing even off camera. Great
guy, fun to work with, and I believe he is
going to go far on his comedic journey.

On the closing of this interview
I asked Danny Minch where do you see
yourself in five years? And he exclaimed with
a big smile Doing Comedy, thats all I see in
any future that I have. I just Love that this is
all I do for a living...and this is all I will ever
do for a living.
