ITEC Portfolio Artifact Reflection

Standard 3.2 Managing Digital Tools and Resources:

Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student
learning experiences.
1. Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was/were
your individual contribution(s)?
The Internet Lesson Plan was created in ITEC 7430 as a lesson demonstrating the
implementation of NETS technology standards. The lesson was a collaborative learning
project where students used various digital tools within the context of the Human Body
Project. The students had to take a real world problem and use digital tools to create a
Public Service Announcement that would be shown to their peers on the school news and
you tube. I created this lesson plan and provided a clear explanation of all of the tools
that students used.

2. Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it
is placed.
Standard 3.2 states that students should use digital tools within the learning experience
and be essential to the learning not just another component. Technology is incorporated
into the project in several aspects; using chrome books to research their topics, sharing
documents using google docs and google classroom, filming using iPad, editing using
iMovie, and publishing using YouTube. The video project will be assessed using a rubric
as a summative test grade. The only previous technology skill that students will be
expected to already possess is using the record option on the iPad and having a google
account that is set up by our school system. The technology also helps students move
into higher order thinking levels.

IPads- used to record the student groups videos (Engaged Learning indicator
Student as Explorer)

Chrome books- used for research (Engaged Learning Indicator- Collaborative,

Standards based, and Seamless)

Google docs- used to share research and script rough drafts with group members
and teacher (Engaged Learning Indicator Collaborative, Student directed, and Multidisciplinary)

Class wiki- used for peer editing of PSA script

3. What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to
improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact?
The day the project is due we had a film festival where my whole class watched all of the
videos that my four classes submitted. We rated each video in terms of if they learned
something new from the video, and if it made them think on a scale of 1 to 5. The top
videos were shown on the school news for the entire school to see. The students were
excited about the project and engaged with the entire process. The students became the
producers and enjoyed interviewing professionals outside of school. This lesson was
effective because the students were able to take what they learned about how the organ
systems work together and investigate the negative effects smoking, alcohol, drugs, etc.
can have on the organ systems. The students became emotionally attached to their cause
and wanted their peers to understand the consequences of these choices on their bodies.
Middle School is generally when students face peer pressure and are consumed with the
changes and development that their own bodies are making. That is why this lesson
connects with this age group of students so well and will hopefully have an impact of
future choices that they or their friends make. The only thing that I would do differently
is with the editing in iMovie it was very hard to use a green screen and insert images as

the back ground. We had a hard time with this and it was an unexpected problem that I
was not adequately prepared for at the time.
4. How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement,
faculty development, or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
This lesson was effective because the students were able to take what they learned about
how the organ systems work together and investigate the negative effects smoking,
alcohol, drugs, etc. can have on the organ systems. The students became emotionally
attached to their cause and wanted their peers to understand the consequences of these
choices on their bodies. Middle School is generally when students face peer pressure and
are consumed with the changes and development that their own bodies are making. That
is why this lesson connects with this age group of students so well and will hopefully
have an impact of future choices that they or their friends make. This artifact was
assessed using google classroom and as with most projects the results were better the
second year that I did this. I think that is due to the fact that the students had student
examples to go by and my comfortability with the project having already done this the
previous year.
