SINCE I WAS A CHILD, I've had


wanderlust. Maybe it was the
missionaries who came to my
church and talked about far-away
lands, or my wild imagination
on road trips from Texas to California where I inevitably found myself
daydreaming about Native Americans on horseback riding through wide
open spaces. My dream job as a 12-year-old was to write for National
Geographic and travel the world, live in various cultures and write
about them. I've been to Japan, Italy, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland,
Canada, Mexico, Central America, and all over the United States. If I
don't get to travel, I start feeling panicky. It's like the world is constantly
calling to me and I must answer.
So, with all that said, maybe you can understand why I find it so
incomprehensible that some people never even make it out of the state
in which they were born and raised. There is a giant world waiting out
there with all kinds of tremendous experiences, yet some people never
feel they have to see any of it. This is a tragedy to me.
You see, I believe traveling broadens our minds and opens our eyes
to how very small our lives are or how very short our history is here in
the United States. When you walk the ancient Roman Road in Rome,
you can feel thousands of years of history pulsing through the stones.
When you gaze up at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, you can sense the
enormity of the vast number of people who have collected at the iconic
structure's base to do the very same thing.
When you travel, you discover that we are all connected despite
having different languages or cultures ... we are all still human. We
like music, we love food, we laugh, we cry. One of my favorite travel
memories is when I was inside a shop in Paris and the Maroon 5 song,
"Payphone," began playing overhead. I started singing it and walked by
a Parisian woman who was singing it, too. I can't explain it to you, but
we crossed cultures somehow and bonded in that moment.
This month, we are dedicating much of this issue to travel. From
traveling abroad for medical tourism (and saving quite a bit of money in
the process), to ways to stay on track with your health and fitness goals
while on vacation, to finding interesting places you can go for a fitness/
wellness adventure, plus 12 ways to travel healthy, we hope you'll feel
inspired to get out and see the world even if it is only a nearby city or
state (baby steps, right?).
If I could offer two travel tips, they would be these: when you get to
your destination, try not to have a major agenda or schedule. There's
beauty in spontaneity when you're somewhere other than home. And,
two, book a walking tour with a local tour guide. It's the best way to
see the city and sites, you'll learn a ton of history, and you're getting
exercise, too! The world IS a book, who's ready to read more?

I never thought my physique could ever


look like this. It all started with me coming
into Max Muscle Orangecrest, California
when I was 15 years old. The owner,

For the past six years, Fullerton Cares has been hosting an annual Mardi Gras
for children on the Autism Spectrum and their families. According to founder
Larry Houser, The Mardi Gras event is the most important thing we do by far!!
Everything starts and ends with Mardi Gras for Autism. This event is widely
respected in the autism community and is a standard that is set for an autism
event."
As a parent of an autistic child himself, Joe Medina of Max Muscle Fullerton,
understands the special needs of children on the Autistic Spectrum. It is so
important for our kids to feel like they have a fun event to attend. Often kids on
the Spectrum are unable to attend certain events due to their special needs and/or
limitations. The annual Mardi Gras addresses this type of need for our children.
Max Muscle Fullerton was able to collaborate with Fullerton Cares and
donated Light it Up Blue T-shirts to celebrate the month of awareness, with all
proceeds going to Fullerton Cares. Children and adults alike purchased T-shirts to
wear proudly all month long/all year long.

summer, here are seven fairly simply
lifestyle changes you can start
working on now.

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER


THROUGHOUT THE DAY. Water

is literally a miracle worker when it


comes to overall health. Its great
for your digestive and circulatory
system. Your skin literally craves
water, especially if you live in the dry
western states. Weight loss gurus
usually recommend a daily intake of
about one gallon of water throughout
the day. Fill up a cooler or jug every
morning and make sure you drink all
that water. Dont be surprised if your
energy levels increase as you hydrate
your system. Bonus: being properly
hydrated boosts your metabolism!

PLAN A 20-MINUTE WALK


DAILY. Right after lunch is a great

time to jump-start your metabolism.


Early afternoon is also great, as it
helps you head off the afternoon
blues while getting your blood flowing.
This can lead to a more productive
afternoon while increasing your overall
health and metabolic rate. Also make
yourself walk a little extra every day.
Instead of stressing about getting
a good spot, park further away and
enjoy a little extra walking. Take
the stairs when you have an option.
Believe it or not, you can easily burn
a few hundred calories daily by doing
these easy things!

CHOOSE HEALTHY SNACKS.

Make sure that you have healthy


snacks, like carrot sticks, fresh fruit,
raisins, nuts, yogurt, etc., in the fridge

ready to take to work or school. When


you keep healthy snacks conveniently
available, you will eat them. This will
help you conquer the emergency
cravings for a candy bar when you
feel famished before or after lunch.

CUT BACK ON SODA AND


ENERGY DRINKS. While they may

give you a fast blast of energy, the


overall net energy you have will be
less. These drinks tend you spike your
energy levels for a short time and then
you have an energy crash that slows
the metabolic rate.

EAT MORE PROTEIN. Make a lean


and healthy, high-protein dinner in the
evening. Make larger portions than
you need so you can enjoy it again the
next day. Also, consider supplementing
with a protein shake once or twice a
day, especially after a workout.
GET ENOUGH SLEEP. Experts

suggest at least 6 to 8 hours of


uninterrupted sleep to help energize
your day. When you wake up
refreshed, you will think clearer and
have more energy. Attitude and energy
is vital when you are focusing on
accomplishing your goals. Besides,
studies are showing that not getting
enough sleep is not only packing on
pounds for some people, but causing
other illnesses.

cant afford it? If so, youre not
alone. According to the National
Association of Dental Plans, 126
million Americans lack dental
coverage, and for those who do
have a dental plan, the quality
and economics of coverage are
not always optimal. Likewise with
medical insurance. According to
the Commonwealth Fund Biennial
Health Insurance Survey 2014, 31
million Americans or 23 percent
of 19- to 64-year-old adults who are
insured all year had such high
out-of-pocket costs or deductibles
relative to their incomes that they
were considered underinsured.
With exorbitant co-pays and cost
sharing expenses for lifesaving or
pain relieving procedures, and no
coverage at all for many dental,

guide to world-class medical tourism.
In 2015, more than one million U.S.
citizens packed their bags and headed
overseas to countries like Brazil, India,
Mexico, Turkey, and Hungary to realize
a 25 to 90 percent cost savings on a
myriad of treatments and procedures,
including dentistry, cosmetic surgery,
heart and orthopedic operations,
weight reduction, and fertility
treatments, to name just a few. And
this number is only expected to grow,
said Woodman.
Medical tourism also called medical
travel is a trend that is growing at
the rate of 25 percent yearly, and is
particularly popular among younger
people. Millennials are sick and tired of
being jacked around by the American
health industry and theyre embracing a
cost effective and often better level of

care abroad, Woodman claimed.


If youre of the mind that no cost
savings is worth questionable medical
practices and unsanitary conditions
in another country, youre likely to
be surprised. Many countries have
invested billions of dollars into their
healthcare systems, resulting in
numerous world-class medical facilities
with modern technology and treatment
that meets or even exceeds U.S.
healthcare standards. In fact, there are
at least 50 countries with a combined
600+ hospitals and ambulatory clinics
that are accredited by one of several
renowned international accreditation
agencies, including the U.S. based
Joint Commission International (JCI).
Many of these medical institutions are
affiliated with U.S. hospitals, such as
Johns Hopkins, Cleveland Clinic, and
Harvard. And many of the physicians
and dentists working abroad received
their training in the United States,

Canada, Switzerland, and Germany.


Other advantages of traveling abroad
for your medical care? According
to Patients Beyond Borders, many
countries offer specialty treatments
that may not be approved in the United
States, shorter waiting periods for some
surgeries, lower wound infection and
complication rates, and less pressure
for early discharge from the hospital.
Its not uncommon to see countries
that cater to American medical
travelers, offering English speaking
staff or at the very least, translators,
and package deals with everything
from a pick up at the airport presurgery to an extended recovery period
in a resort or surgical retreat, where
postoperative follow-up professionals
like physical therapists come to you
to give treatment. As for sightseeing,
Woodman suggested that except for
the most minor of procedures, medical
travel should be thought of as more
of a business trip than a vacation, due
to postoperative or post treatment
discomfort and limitations as well as
fatigue. Still, its likely that youll take
in some great views and enjoy the
cultural differences and hospitality in a
new country.
If youre interested in joining the
ranks of medical travelers abroad,
you need to do your homework first,
said Woodman, from exploring which
country is best suited for your medical
needs, to selecting a doctor, clinic or
hospital, comparing costs, and planning

who and what to take along. And


while you dont have to be a computer
whiz, most of your research and
inquiries are best done online. Here are
some tips from Woodman:

Plan carefully. It takes time


to research your options, even
if youre using a medical travel
planner (WorldMedAssist.com and
MedicalTourism.com are two such
agencies). Even if much of the planning
is done for you, you still should
spend plenty of time checking out the
credentials of your doctor, the hospital,
and the travel planning agency itself.
Consider your savings. Carefully
consider the amount of money youll
save, taking into mind airfare and
accommodations while gone. In
general, if youre not saving at least
$6,000 on your medical journey, it may
not be worth traveling abroad for care.
Let your home doc know that you are
traveling out of the country for medical
care, so you can get proper follow up
care once youve returned home. Youll
also need records of your diagnosis and
the suggested treatment plan.
Choose a reliable companion.

If at all possible, take a companion


someone you trust and whose company
you enjoy along with you for help and
support before, during and after your
treatment or surgery.

Mexico Boasts four first-rate American


accredited hospitals offering bariatrics and
weight management programs at a 40-60
percent savings. Its also a leading country

planner, hospital, and physician what
medical records or tests you need to
bring with you to make things go as
smoothly as possible. When you are
ready to go home, youll need records
of your treatment and recommended
post treatment care.
Be realistic. Allow plenty of time
abroad for basic recuperation, and
dont expect to do a lot of sightseeing.
Learn about your host country. Do your
homework regarding currency, weather,
transportation, food, and water, so
there are no surprises to deal with

Go DOMESTIC

Put off by the possibility of language and


cultural barriers related to traveling abroad
for medical care? You may still be able to
shop around within the United States for
the best medical care at the best price.
While many insurance companies limit their
coverage to in network facilities within
your state of residence, increasingly, some
health plans, such as United Healthcare,
are offering domestic medical travel plans,
allowing you to explore your options.
And, said Laura Carabello, executive
editor and publisher of Medical Travel
Today and U.S. Domestic Medical Travel,
large self-insured companies like Walmart,
Lowe's, and PepsiCo are introducing
domestic medical travel options for
employees for surgeries such as knee and
hip replacements and bariatric procedures.
This is the fastest growing trend in medical
travel today, she claimed.
How it works, Carabello explained,
is that companies get a discounted
rate from a group of hospitals that are
considered centers of excellence, or
American hospitals that score high for both
reasonable cost and high quality care in
areas such as transplants, surgeries and
cancer.The employer will then waive the
employee copays for the treatment, she
added, and in many instances, will even
provide travel and lodging costs for the
employee and a companion. This gives you
access to the best care for a reasonable
or even no cost.
You can still choose to get your medical
care close to home. But it may pay to check
out an employers medical travel plan and
be willing to go the distance especially
if its to a high quality medical facility at a
huge cost savings.

5 Healthy Travel Trends

Some great trends have emerged this year that are helping to keep travelers
healthy as well as happy. Anytime we can maintain healthy habits while traveling,
we are doing great, explains Jayne McAllister, of Jayne McAllister Travel
Wellnessm and author of Mile High & Health: The Frequent Travelers Roadmap
to Eating, Energy, Exercise and a Balanced Life, Traveling can be demanding
for anyone who is even remotely health conscious, but times are changing as
indicated by exciting new trends that facilitate keeping a healthy mind and body
on the road. Here are five healthy travel trends you should be aware of.
1. Health-Oriented Hotels. It used to be that you stayed in a hotel that boasted a
mediocre workout room down at the end of a dark corridor and a restaurant with one
menu item highlighted as heart healthy. Business travelers now have true wellness
options in the shape of hotels whose brand is geared toward the health-conscious
traveler. IHGs EVEN Hotels has been going strong in the mid-price range for a couple
of years now. At the luxury end of the market, famed gym brand Equinox is entering the
hospitality business and developing its first hotel in Manhattan, due to open in 2018.
The trend has filtered to mainstream properties, which have amped up their facilities for
healthy travel. Westin has long led the way with its Westin WORKOUT rooms, followed by
other hospitality groups such as the Trump Hotel Collections Trump Wellness signature
program. Since 2012, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas has offered dedicated Stay Well
rooms, designed by Delos, which include among other features an air purification
system, aromatherapy, long wave night lighting, and vitamin C-infused showers.
2. Airport Workouts. Passengers are taking advantage of airport down time to get
moving to counter the effects of being sedentary and stationary. Many airports now
boast walking paths and yoga rooms. This year, gyms are now joining shops, restaurants,
and bars as airport concessions thanks to a startup company called AirFit. Facilities will
include a state-of-the-art workout room, showers, clothing purchase/rental, and luggage
storage. First up is New York John F. Kennedy International Airport, followed by San
Francisco International Airport, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
3. Mainstreaming Meditation. From Deepak Chopras website to the Harvard
Business Review, meditation for corporate executives is becoming more common.
Many companies are bringing in meditation specialists to teach their executives how to
focus, think more clearly and make better, more profitable decisions. Meditation works
especially well for business travelers, who are subject to more stress than non-traveling,
as it can be practiced anywhere, including on airplanes and in hotel rooms. Apps are
available to guide neophytes through the process of meditating. With flight delays or
other curveballs that are often thrown at the frequent traveler, the passenger can retreat
into a meditation rather than an airport bar or their laptop. Per the Harvard report, the
results of a sustained meditation practice are increased resilience, emotional intelligence,
creativity, focus, and improved relationships.
4. Adding Personal Time to Trips. Bleisure is a fast growing trend of combining
leisure time with business trips. Nearly half (46 percent) of business travelers add
personal days to all or most of their business trips. The major reasons for this trend, as
cited in the Bleisure Report 2014, include wanting to explore new cities, to gain cultural
experience and knowledge, and to contribute to work/life balance. Three in five business
travelers are more likely to take a bleisure trip than they were five years ago. For most
companies, the practice of adding leisure time to a business trip is a win-win. Employees
are less likely to burn out and are therefore more productive.
5. Doing Less to Produce More. Doing more doesnt make you more productive.
"Presenteeism" is becoming the new absenteeism, especially for mobile workforces. For
example, a traveling executive might be tired but feels compelled to work on a plane to
make good use of time in the air. Or they might travel home on a Sunday and present
themselves at the office on Monday, ready for business as usual. In both scenarios, they
might have been exhausted but they have gone through the motions of working yet not
performing to optimum capacity. Without the right amount of rest, the work completed
on the plane may have to be redone, or the employee returning to the office may not be
fully present and effective. The best companies are recognizing that traveling employees
need time to recover from travel and allow time off or time working from home to do this.

the Skin

You're In

If you are age 50 or older, this is a column


for you! This month, it's all about caring
for your body's largest organ: your skin!

LOVING YOUR SKIN may sound a


bit over the top, but hey, think about
this! We go to the gym or wherever
it is you choose to workout and well
spend an hour or more toning our
muscles, revving up the heart, and
checking our reflection in the mirror
to see if what were doing is making a
difference. We adjust our diet, drink that
water, use supplements, and some of us
even do a nip/tuck! Yet after all is said
and done, the largest organ on our body
seems to get the least amount of TLC
from most of us! We either dont want
to take the time or consider it a waste
of time!
Ive been taking a consensus and
observing those around me lately and
my take is that most of those 50 and
older are having some kind of issue/
issues with their skin. Our skin shed
dead cells at an amazing rate when
we were younger, but as we age, that
process slows down (for men, too!).
The slowing internally and externally
causes a myriad of things to happen
to our skin: wrinkling, creping, and
thinning and dont forget spots and
growths, too! EEEEK!
So, we have some choices to make.
We can do something about this or
behave like proverbial couch spuds, sit
back and watch our skin turn to dust!
Recently, I talked to a retired
dermatologist (Dr. Martin Seng from
Arizona) about dry, aging skin and he
gave me some great information thats
applicable and doable. Like with any
new routine, it takes a bit to get used to
and a bit of time, but it can be done!

Dr. Sengs first recommendation was


easy: cut down the size of towel used
to dry with. Yep, no more full-sized
towels. He suggested we use a hand
towel it gets the job done without
over drying our skin. Next, cool down
that shower. For us over-50s, it may feel
good, but hot water is hard on the skin.
The showers at the gym where I work
out at are quite warm, so I just cut my
time down in the shower (bingo!). He
also recommended we stop using overly
drying soaps and shampoos, suggesting
we use an alternative like Cetaphil.
Now, heres the biggie, and the
hardest to follow through with when
youre at the gym or pool: put lotion on,
head to toe, directly after your shower.
Im told the skin is at its most accepting
during this period, pores are open, and
skin is moist and ripe for the slathering!
My personal preference is Nivea Skin
Firming Hydration. I also employ a back
brush to put lotion on my back.
As I finished my chat with Dr. Seng,
he was also adamant about the need
for sunscreen and making sure we
read every label. Each manufacturer
has different ingredients, which means
different times for reapplication. I never
really thought about the reapplication
aspect until I spent a day in the sun
life-guarding recently. Taking his warning
to heart, my SPF 50 sunblock said
reapplication was necessary every 80
minutes! I walked away that day with a
great tan.

IT COULD HAVE been coincidence, but perhaps it was

actually fate that led Amber Blom to the competition stage


for the first time.
In 2011, Amber's trainer made the suggestion that
she consider competing in the bikini division. This was a
conversation that was overheard by another competitor in
the gym who then approached the two to say, I dont mean
to interrupt, but I overheard you talking about competing
and I think youd do great at it. You have the look for that
division.
Amber got the name of the competitors coach, Tara
Thatcher of Perfectly Prepared, who she contacted that
same evening to learn about all the different federations and
divisions. I think that day we picked my first competition,
Amber recalled. The date she and Tara set for her stage
debut was April 2012.
Amber took 1st place Regional in that show and
later that year went on to take 4th place at a national
competition. The following year, she took first place
in her class and was named the overall winner and
received her pro card. She competed several more
times, including in May 2014 where she took 1st
place in the Bikini Pro Division. The biggest thing
for me was gaining confidence, she said. I
struggled with insecurity my whole life never
feeling like I had my own thing. I lived in the
shadows of my siblings and friends. Winning
my first show was a definite confidence
booster and the pivotal moment of
believing in myself.
Now, after taking a few years
off from competing, Amber can
reflect back on her competitions,
Trophies are material, and in
fact I threw all of them away,
but gaining confidence and
self-love are the only things
that matter.
Amber is ready to come
back to the fitness industry with
a more mature mindset. Its not about getting as lean as
possible, its not about sacrificing everything and everyone for
the sake of staying on track, she said. My goal is to show
my peers that a healthy balance is possible. I love having
drinks with my friends and going out for ice cream with my
husband. Those are all perfectly fine and attainable as long
as the rest of the time you make healthy choices. MS&F

efforts. Here are some great tips to
stay on track and fit in a workout

Finding time to exercise when not at home in your regular


routine is key. It also keeps your mind free to decompress from
all the activities and stress of travel. It is important to make
a commitment while on vacation to find the time to exercise
eliminate excuses. It could be as simple as 30-45 minutes
first thing in the morning while everyone else is still snoozing
or 30 minutes before each shower and dinner in the evening.
Regardless of how you schedule it, keeping some regularity will
increase your energy levels and have you feeling good. If you
can stick with your routine while traveling, you will also have no
problem getting back into the groove when you return home.
If you are fortunate to have a fully equipped hotel gym, you
can easily perform all of your standard workouts. If the hotel
only has cardio equipment, you will need to be a bit more
creative on some days. There are countless alternatives as
well. Maybe you are staying on a boardwalk by the beach or
somewhere else with beautiful scenery. Take advantage of this
and do some movements outside while enjoying a view that
you dont see at home. Many hotels have running maps for the
area. I have taken advantage of that often and added a GPS
watch to track my distance and pace, which makes it more fun.
With a little effort, you can find many websites, YouTube
videos, books, and apps to see a wide variety of exercises you
can even do from your room with little or no equipment. There
are also some simple items you can purchase and take with you
to help. Top items I have bought and packed based
on my needs include: resistance bands, loop bands,
agility ladder, jump rope, TRX, sliders, lateral
resistor, 2-pound dumbbells, and an abdominal
roller. Any one of these can add to your routine
on the road.
You can even use items in the hotel room and
the hotel itself. Here is an example of a routine I
use as one of my favorite things to do:

IF YOU ARE soon destined for a vacation, particularly if


it requires wearing a swimsuit, chances are that you have
devoted plenty of hard work to looking your best in that
suit. However, dont let the vacation itself wipe all of your
efforts away. Consider instead how amazing it would feel
to come home afterwards feeling no guilt over losing that
swimsuit-ready body that you worked so hard to achieve.

and then do it all over again.
This is only one example of a no
excuses workout in the room with no
equipment necessary. There are many
more I can share with you! There are
truly no excuses when you examine
the numerous body weight exercises
that can be done while on vacation.
Most people underestimate the
intensity of what just using their
own body can do. If you
have avoided trying these
types of exercises, try it
as a change-up and see
what a great full body
workout it is in a short
amount of time.
If you are like me,
youre seeking a vacation
with lots of activities that get
the body moving. Often though, we
find ourselves being a part of the more
sedentary relaxing vacation of lounge

This gives you a chance to gain some
valuable extra steps in burning more
calories.

Relax at the end of your day

before going to bed. Yoga moves can

before bed will help you get a better

What is your daily diet plan?

I eat eggs, egg whites, bananas, plain


oatmeal, coconut oil, natural peanut butter,
chicken breasts, white fish, green veggies
like broccoli and spinach, and quite a few
protein drinks often blended with frozen
berries.

How do you stay motivated?

In my profession as a musician you get


photographed all the time by cell phones at the
most random times in all different lighting, and its a
pretty good reminder to eat clean, especially when
your costume has no shirt!

Who inspires you and why?

I still look at photos from the 70s and have to say


Arnold really got it right. Lucky genetics and exactly
the right attitude. As far as people in my industry,
my good man Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein
never fails to impress and inspire in fact he was
kind enough to give me some pointers, essentially,
eat good and train good and dont be a moron.

What is your training regimen like?

I dont take any days off necessarily, they just happen every
once in a while. I do fasted cardio of some type every day
usually walking or treadmill, and on tour I do jump rope and
kettlebell swings for HIIT. My training split is: chest, back, legs,
shoulders, and arms. Lately Ive been doing 3-4 sets of 15 reps
and sometimes following those with super sets and drop sets
to shock the muscle and pump the most blood to the area. This
is a huge change from 20 years of doing heavy singles and no
more than 5 reps, and my body has responded with new growth.
I also dont have to take time off every 6 weeks due to some sort of
injury! I usually end up with 15-20 total sets per workout.

What are your top training tips?

1. Be consistent with your diet and write everything


down as much as you can in a great fitness app like
My Fitness Pal. Include your weight after you get up
in the morning. Years later you will appreciate this!
2. I think that shocking the muscle with new
routines is the way to break through plateaus, but
consistently trying to beat previous max attempts
and max reps is the best way to make sure your
plateau is a high as it can be, so dont change
things before you take them as far as you can.
3. Drink plenty of water!

choices could have killed him.
Thankfully, he listened to his
doctors, found Max Muscle,
and turned his life around.

IT WAS SUPPOSED to be just an


innocent thing, a fondness for fast food
and soda, but somehow the innocently
occasional indulgence turned into a
habit, specifically a habit that slowly
got out of hand and had very serious
implications.
As a young teenager, Jonatan
Aguilar-Aranda, 22, from Greeley, CO
loved soda, fast food, and the fried
foods his family often prepared, but
he also hated any kind of physical
activity and always found a way out of
participating in spite of the efforts of
his family, teachers, and doctors to get
him involved. The combination led to
a terrifying experience when in 2014,
at the age of 20, topping the scale at
303 pounds, he found himself suffering
from excruciating stomach pains.
His family rushed him to the
emergency room where doctors ran a
number of tests and ultimately realized
this young man had a tumor very near
his liver and they would not know if it
was cancer or not until they performed
the necessary surgery to figure it out.
Life got suddenly very real.
SERIOUS WAKE UP CALL
Later that very same day, Jonatan
remembers waking up to a team of
doctors surrounding him to deliver the
life-changing news. The tumor was
cancerous and it had invaded the liver.
The doctors removed part of his liver
with the tumor and although the liver
was the only human organ that could

re-grow, the doctors warned him if he
didnt make major life changes, the
cancer could return and the next time
he might not be so lucky. They were
very direct and told him if he didnt
change his lifestyle he would not live
past 35. This was a very serious wake
up call for Jonatan.
Jonatan underwent chemotherapy
and radiation treatments to treat the
cancer, but still he refused to make the
major changes the doctors wanted him
to make. He was still in denial and
denial is a very powerful thing.
Months later the stomach pains
returned and Jonatan once again found
himself in the emergency room with
a team of doctors trying to explain to
him the importance of making lifestyle
changes.

The doctor encouraged him to join a
weight-loss contest, which he ended
up winning. The prize was a free
membership to Work Out West.
Jonatan loved to dance, so the first
thing he did at the gym was attend
Zumba classes. Soon, he met personal
trainer Jeremy Gregory Pipes and finally
took ownership of his issues. Jeremy
believed in Jonatan and helped him
learn to work out properly and referred
him to Erin and Ron Worley at Max
Muscle Greeley.
At first Jonatan was just looking for a
good protein and pre workout, but the
relationship soon became much more.
Jonatan said, Erin became my go-to
source of nutrition and supplement
information, she also became my
supporter and Max Muscle Greeley

Perseverance and a lot of hard work
have produced undeniable results.
On the day of his surgery, 6 foot 1
inch Jonatan topped the scale at 303
pounds and today he weighs 160

pounds. He went from a size 48-50


in pants to a 28-30 and he is now 8

After a recent visit to the doctor for
a check up in March, he was told the
lifestyle changes he made had a huge
impact on his health. Today, he is 143

training, I couldnt even run one lap.
Now I feel light and I feel like I could
run a marathon. He used to be able to
do one song in a Zumba class and now
he is a certified Zumba instructor.
Now I am really open to [trying
new] activities, Jonatan said, adding
that he loves working out with his
trainer, too. Seven times a week I go
for one hour and work out with Jeremy.
He pushes me; he believes in me.
Jonatan has a whole new body and a
totally different outlook on life after the
huge progress he has made over the
past 7 months of his transformation.
He is planning on becoming a certified
personal trainer so that he can help
others who need to make major

traveling for business
or a vacation, keeping
up with your regular
diet and exercise
regimen may be
low on your priority
list. Some of the
challenges you may
face include:
Dining out often
when on the road.
Finding healthy meals
and snacks at the airport or hotel.
Frequently changing schedules that
affect the time you have for meals.
Difficulty fitting in your regular
exercise routine.
These factors can lead to a path of
dietary disasters and make it easy to
fall off track. Because of the temptation
to fall into bad habits, its important
to learn to be more disciplined on the
road. Planning ahead will help prevent
stumbling off your fit and healthy path
and avoid getting thrown off course. It
will also keep your energy levels high

First and foremost, have a game
plan and stick to it! The small choices
you make can lead to big changes.
Having small wins leads to meaningful
progress. Building better habits one
step at a time will give you the energy
to make the most of every single day.
Here are some ways to prepare for
those who travel frequently:
1. Pack Your Own Food. Purchase a
small cooler or insulated lunch bag. Fill

it with boiled
eggs, protein
muffins, nuts,
homemade
trail mix,
raw veggies,
an apple,
protein drinks,
almond butter
packets,
turkey jerky,
nitrate-free
deli meat, or
brown rice
cakes. This
way, when you
are hungry,
you have a
healthy option on hand. Also, do not
skip meals! This can lead to excessive
hunger and cravings later in the hours
that follow. Eat moderately every 3-4
hours to prevent excessive hunger.
2. Check Ahead for Resources.
In your room, make sure there is a
mini fridge and microwave. Consider
packing a Mini George Foreman grill
and small blender. Fill the mini fridge
with healthy snacks and meal options.
If driving, bring your food with you. If
flying, ask the hotel for the location of

the closest grocery store. If staying in


a hotel with a kitchenette or renting
a vacation home, plan to make most of
your meals there.
3. Eat Breakfast. Skipping breakfast
leaves your body in a state of crisis in
which it begins to store fat and slow
down your metabolism for protection.
It also makes you more likely to
crave sugar and grab junk food. You
need all of your energy to make it
through a busy business trip or funfilled vacation. Choices you make in
the morning will affect energy levels
later in the day. At the hotel breakfast
buffet, avoid anything processed or
loaded with sugar. Opt for the eggs
and oatmeal. Add the protein powder
you packed to your oatmeal for an
added nutritional boost.
4. Stay Hydrated. Drink plenty of
water when flying rather than alcohol
and caffeine, which will dehydrate you.
The low humidity and recirculating air
within the aircraft cause dehydration,
which can worsen jet lag and cause
fatigue. Drink eight ounces of water for
every hour of the flight.
5. Plan Ahead for Exercise. When
choosing a hotel, pick one with a
good workout room (usually photos
are viewable on their website). Also
check the gym hours to make sure
they will work with your schedule. A
24-hour workout room is preferred.
If no workout room is available, pack
your own equipment such as resistance
bands, jump rope, TRX with door
attachment, speed ladder, or plyo
loops. Download or print exercises
you can do in the hotel room without
equipment. (Turn to page 30 for some
great ways to work out in your hotel
room or anywhere with no equipment.)
6. Use the Stairs. Wherever there is
a choice, use the stairs instead of an
escalator or elevator.
7. Stay Active at the Airport. Resist
the urge to immediately sit down at the
gate. Walk around and window shop
or just check out the surroundings.
Never take the moving walkways. Make
it fun by tracking your steps or miles.
Women should pack their work heels
and wear either running shoes or flip
flops thru the airport.

8. Take Breaks. You will think better


and be more alert if you move around
every hour for 5-10 minutes.
9. Monitor Alcohol Consumption.
Keep alcohol to an absolute minimum
and have a glass of water before each
glass of alcohol. Alcohol stimulates the
appetite. If you drink before ordering,
you are more likely to order too much
food. Drink water first and save the
alcohol towards the end of your meal.
Wine, beer, and mixed drinks are all
loaded with calories; even a minor
buzz can make it hard to make healthy
choices. Alcohol calories can add up
quickly.

Order sauces and dressings on the


side; this way you can control your
own portions.
Dont be afraid to ask for
substitutions; substitute fruit or
salad instead of fries and chips.
Choose healthy preparation
methods: grilled, steamed, baked,
roasted, poached, and broiled. Skip
anything with the tag smothered,
crispy, crusted, fried, or sauted.

10. Be Accountable. Log your food


and calories on an app like My Fitness
Pal. Keeping track may help you make
better choices. Start connecting what
you eat with how you feel by tracking
it daily.
11. Sleep Well. Adequate sleep
is a game changer! Consider
sleep your ammunition. If you
get less than six hours of sleep
a night, you are more than
four times as likely to catch
a cold. Less than six hours
of sleep for six days has the
same effect on your cognitive
abilities as an intoxication
level of .08. In the book, Eat,
Move, Sleep, author Tom
Rath equates four hours of
sleep loss to a six-pack of
beer. You also eat less when
you have slept well. When
you are sleep deprived, you
will generally eat 500 extra
calories during the day.
Sleep needs to be treated
as an investment, not the
first expense we cut out.
12. Dine Out
Intelligently. When you
eat out, be smart about it.
Heres how:
Avoid buffets!
Look at the menu ahead
of time; most restaurant
menus can be found
online.
If available, check
nutritional information;
even a salad can have a
shocking amount of calories or
carbs.

DIRECTIONS
Place dates in a food processor and pulse
to finely chop. Add remaining ingredients
EXCEPT coconut flakes. Pulse several
times to finely chop almonds and blend
all ingredients into a crumbly paste. Form
one heaping tablespoon of the mixture
into a ball about the size of a smaller golf
ball. Then, press into rounds. Dust with
coconut flakes (optional) pressing lightly to
adhere. Chill in refrigerator for at least 20

Kukicha Twig Tea

Many say the best green teas in the


world come from Japan. In fact, its
the nations most popular beverage.
There are many varieties of green tea,
including the unique kukicha twig tea.
Instead of using tea leaves to make
this brew, kukicka is made from the
stems and twigs of the tea plant.
Kukicha is rich in vitamins A and C
and is reported to be higher in calcium
than milk. The antioxidants in kukicha
and other types of green tea have

Multivitamin Use is Heart Healthy

Researchers from the Divisions of Preventive Medicine and Institute of


Environmental Medicine at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden
set out to investigate how multivitamin use is associated with the risk of
cardiovascular disease (CVD) in initially healthy men at baseline. They studied
18,530 male physicians aged 40 years old from the Physicians Health Study
I cohort who were free of CVD and cancer at baseline (1982). During a mean
follow-up of 12.2 years, there were 1,697 incident cases of major CVD (defined
as nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, and CVD death). Overall,
researchers concluded from this long-term prospective study in initially healthy
men, multivitamin use for 20 years was associated with a lower risk of major

BCAA Promotes mTOR Activation

Researchers from the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences set
out to evaluate the contribution of the branched-chain amino acids (BCAA)
to this effect of mTOR activation by comparing the stimulatory role of
leucine, BCAA, and EAA ingestion on anabolic signaling following exercise.
In this study, eight trained volunteers completed four sessions of resistance
exercise during which they ingested either placebo, leucine, BCAA, or EAA
(including the BCAA) in random order. Muscle biopsies were taken at rest,
immediately after exercise, and following 90 and 180 minutes of recovery.
Following 90 minutes of recovery, the activity of mTOR was greater than at
rest in all four trials. Researchers concluded that EAA (including the BCAA)
ingestion appears to stimulate mTOR activation more effectively than the
other supplements and the results also suggest that this effect is primarily

A recent study reported the effects of


CoQ10, a component of the electron
transport chain in mitochondria, on
anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
mediators, thus protecting tissues
against oxidative injury. Researchers
from the Department of Movement and
Training Science at Firat University in
Turkey conducted a six-week study
using rats that were assigned randomly
for sedentary vs. exercise training.
When compared with the sedentary
group, significant decreases in heart,
liver, and muscle NFB levels were
observed in CoQ10 supplemented
rats, while the inhibitory protein
IB significantly increased. CoQ10
supplementation caused an increase
in Nrf2 and HO-1 after exercise training
in heart, liver, and muscle tissues.
Researchers concluded that CoQ10
modulates the expression of NFB,
IB, Nrf2 and HO-1 in exercise training,
indicating an anti-inflammatory effect
and emphasizes its role in antioxidant

KEEPING YOUR NUTRITION on

track while away from home can be


a challenge. But with a little bit of
planning, stepping out doesnt have to
mean stepping away from your gains.
Over the course of my tenure as a top
national level amateur bodybuilder and
on into the pros, Ive had many people
ask me, Whats the secret to building
a prize-winning physique? The truth is,
there are no secrets to achieving a high
level of success in fitness. Its really as
simple as this:
Consistency is the key: Weve
said it before: the body is the most
wonderfully adaptive machine there
is. Over time, the body will adjust and
adapt to stressors or stimuli placed on
it, and this is how we elicit change,
build muscle, lose fat, and increase our
level of fitness. The more consistently
and regularly you can introduce a
stimulus to the body (such as cardio,
weight training, or a particular meal
plan), the greater and the more rapid
the bodys adaptive response to said
stimulus.
FOOD is the secret: Youve heard it
before, now here it is again: You are
what you eat. This statement could
not be simpler, nor more accurate. If
we consistently supply our body with
proper nutrition, solid building blocks to
fuel muscle growth, and physical and
physiological activity, our bodies will be
better able to adapt and grow stronger,
leaner, and more fit. Our food choices,
the types of fuel you put into your
machine, will determine how you look
and feel, plain and simple.
As a bodybuilder, Ive learned to
appreciate Tupperware. There are
several companies now that specialize
in specialized cooler-type bags with
custom food trays available, specifically
for active people that need to bring
their food along with them (two good

me on track and compliant. Follow your
macros, and youll find its easier to
prep for a trip.

Protein: Dry protein powders are easy


to pack, and great for back up or as
a part of your daily meal plan. Most
powders available today also taste
amazing. Whey protein and casein are
staples in my own personal everyday
diet. Dry powders will also stay fresh
and unspoiled. Pack in zip lock bags.
Carbs: Rice cakes are light, easy to
pack and store, and wont spoil at room
temperature.
Fats: Nuts are easy to pack, and make
great on-the-go snacks.
Just be sure to keep your eye on the
prize by keeping your mind on your
macro-nutrient prescription. Its often
easy to over-snack on nuts or other
portable finger foods when on the
road.
Keep in mind that most hotels offer
oats, fruits, or dry cereals for breakfast.
Many hotels will provide a refrigerator
if you request one call ahead to be
sure. Remember that grocery stores are
typically not that far from most major
hotels. If you dont have to haul your
entire trips worth of food, dont. Simply
buy it locally!
So remember, with a little bit of
careful planning, you will be able to
maintain your meal plan and exercise
program, and continue to progress
along your fitness path to your own
version of perfect! It just takes a little

SCIENCE ALERT - THE SECRET BEHIND BCAA RATIOS

Branched-Chain Amino Acids or BCAAs have become all the craze for athletes looking to
improve performance but why are there so many different ratios? A common question asked is what
is the best ratio to be used in a BCAA blend? Is it 2:1:1, 5:1:1, 8:1:1 or 10:1:1?
The optimal ratio of the BCAA is 2:1:1 and the primary reason is that this is the ratio that naturally
occurs in foods, the ratio found in muscle tissue and the ratio supported by the majority of published
scientific studies on the benefits of BCAA supplementation for muscle growth, energy and fat loss.
The proper 2:1:1 represents the ratio of leucine:valine:isoleucine. Higher amounts of leucine in a
BCAA formula has not been shown in scientific studies to be any more beneficial than in the 2:1:1
ratio. In fact, higher leucine content may actually be detrimental in outcompeting valine and isoleucine
for absorption, assimilation into muscle tissues and function. Valine helps
