HYPERLAPSE

Is it possible to combat jet lag and increase the comfort of long haul passengers
through design and the manipulation of interior spaces?
There are those airports which make you feel better, and there are those airports that,
when you go there, your heart sinks: you cant wait to get out of there.
They both function as airports, but its the things you cant measure that make them different. 1

provided, where passengers can sit and relax in a very casual way.

Hyperlapse is an Airport Lounge for the proposed new terminal six planned to be developed at Heathrow Airport in 2030 2.
The new terminal will create a new travel experience, increase its popularity with passengers, making Heathrow a truly international hub.
For this reason I wanted to create a place where passengers have an opportunity to recalibrate their internal clocks
and help them with the transition between their home time zone and that of their final destination.
Brief Explanation

Airports today have become one of the most important mediums for transport and
communication. Passengers from all around the world travel to international destinations
via airports. An Airport Lounge provides us as designers with some fantastic opportunities
to contribute to the welfare and experiences of travel.

I intend to design an Airport Lounge for the proposed new Terminal planned for
development at Heathrow Airport by 2030 2. The new terminal will elevate Heathrows
status into an International Hub (much like the airport in Dubai). Once this gets under
way, people from a wide range of time zones will visit this airport. Hyperlapse is a
place where passengers are presented with an opportunity to recalibrate their internal
clocks (in their minds) while they are transiting between their home time zone and that of
their final destination. Hyperlapse has been designed on three levels, each catering to
provide a different time zone experience, replicating the sense of Day Time, Evening
and Night Time. I will be manipulating natural light, water vapour and artificial light within
the interiors of Airport Lounge in a way that would reflect these time zones. I believe that
passengers can arrive in right state of mind by adapting themselves to the time zone
of their destination. The Airport Lounge building captures a sense of time through the
development of three experiential levels. These are as follows:
Level 3 Theme: Day Time
I have represented the idea of a Day Time zone through creation of a Parkland Area.
We tend to think of the outdoors in day and leisure time we enjoy is often enjoyed in city
parks and rural settings. Passengers experience a very vibrant sense of the Day Time
which is further enhanced through creation of a bright skyline, artificial clouds, natural
trees, natural light, wind, pebbled flooring and grass that dominate the interior spaces.
Passengers are also provided with a sense of transparency where they can view through
discrete levels of the Airport Lounge with the help of organic shaped partially glazed
flooring on each level.
Level 2 Theme: Evening
The evening time zone of Airport Lounge resembles the idea of a City Square and Urban
Street Walk. Most of us are commuting in the evening, shopping, travelling home and
enjoying the buzz of the city sharing time with friends for a drink or a meal. Facilities
such as restaurants, bars, retail shops, food stalls and relaxation areas are provided to
enhance the Evening Time theme. Water Mist is provided to enhance the beauty of its
interiors 3 and provide an evening atmosphere, more moody and a real change from the
daytime experience.
Level 1 Theme: Night Time
This entire level represents a Night Time experience. The area is developed in an
underground environment and no natural light penetrates the space. When travelling we
spend our night times in hotels so it makes sense to create a hotel type environment. The
spaces are definitely Five Star where its passengers enjoy high quality hospitality and
rooms to sleep, and napping areas for relaxing.
Connectivity
The Hyperlapse is connected to the main terminal via an arc shaped bridge. The three
Levels of the Hyperlapse, which represent unique time zones, are connected with each
other by a Time Machine themed Elevator, which would transport passengers to their
desired time zone level. Passengers would experience a very unique Time Change
effect as they transcend to different levels, whilst they are in the elevator.

Context and Rationale

The reason for involving myself on the MA course is a desire to reinvigorate myself as a
good designer in a field that is beyond boundaries of my previous studies. My previous
studies portrayed my interest for Airports, which involved designing, researching and
understanding their functionality. As an interior designer with an interest in airports, I find
myself very lucky to get a chance to explore the experiences of the users of the airport
and explore the subject in more depth to develop a more creative design response.
I have considered time as the driving element of the project. Heathrow Airport is a hub
where passengers from all around the world arrive from different time zones. This why I
have called the project Hyperlapse where Hyper makes reference to the way we travel at
extraordinary speeds between countries, and where lapse makes reference to the way
we transcend the boundaries of time itself. Another pragmatic ambition for the project is
that travellers will be helped to eradicate jet lag 4.
As a designer I too have the ambition to create an interesting space with interior elements
that provide a unique and entertaining experience. One which will cause a stir and
increase demand for Heathrows services.

Key Areas of Research

Providing different kinds of visual and sensational experiences of natural and artificial
elements in the interiors of the airport lounge airport lounge in a way that it recalibrates
the internal clocks of the passengers and help them adapt themselves to their destination
time zone.
Understanding the natural elements that dominate and represent the idea of Day,
Evening and Night Time, for example sun, moon, trees, stars, clouds, etc. and how
Architectural and interior elements can be used to reflect these ideas.
Understanding the comfort level of passengers at different time phases throughout the
day, for example rejuvenation during the morning, relaxing or taking short naps during
the evening, etc.

Evening zone at Level 2. The
level 2 is a mere representation
of a City Square and Urban
Street Walk Theme. Water Mist
Sprinklers which represent the
shape of a tree, enhances the
visual beauty of interiors with
its mist.

Understanding the comfort levels of different kinds of global passengers who would come
to the airport lounge, and accordingly provide different kinds of facilities and interesting
elements which would provide them an experience which they would remember even
after leaving the airport terminal.
Researching and understanding Parkland, City Square and Urban Street Walk, and
5 Star Hotel environments.

Intended Outcomes

Hyperlapse would be an airport lounge at Heathrow Airport, which would help its global
passengers to recalibrate their internal clocks and help them with the transition between
their home time zone and that of their final destination. It would help accommodate all
kinds of Global Passengers coming from different time zones, with different tastes and
comfort levels. It would be an ideal place where passengers can take some time off from
their journey by relaxing and getting refreshed. The Airport Lounge would be a medium
for passengers to spend their time in a very alluring and effective way, as they wait for
hours before or between their flights at the Airport Lounge. Passengers would get an
opportunity to inhabit different time zones at different levels, providing them with a very
unique experience, which they would carry with them even after they leave the terminal.
