spoil your guests with a true reminder of French Pastries, from our French Baker.
They come in two sizes large and ex large.
On a lovely summers evening last Thursday the 9th June we welcomed Bob Hares as
our speaker. Bob is a former lecturer from Pershore College and a renowned
nurseryman. The subject of the talk was the Garden in July.
Firstly Bob introduced us as too what would be growing at this time of year ,naming
various shrubs flowers and vegetables, reminding us of the need for constant
vigilance against pests .Bob advocated very little in the way of pest control just a
gentle rubbing of aphids on a stem and perhaps spraying just the affected area. Not
so gentle with the Lily beetle, removing the beetle and squashing it under foot.
The next part of the talk centered around a blue plastic box Bob had brought with
him. The box contained a treasure trove of cut stems of plants .Roses, Peonies.
Alstroemeria, Orange Blossom, Mallow some of which he told us could easily be
propagated in a general purpose compost. He emphasized the importance of saving
seed and just having a go, not too worry if the colour of a plant turned out slightly
differently. A whole new world of planting and propagating stretches ahead of us as
we delved into the box to help ourselves to these hopefully future established plants
in our own gardens.
Our next meeting on the 14th July is the outing to the walled garden at Croome Park
and Supper.

We are delighted to have two new recruits this month. Also our D of E student having
finished his course and enjoyed the experience is going to continue to help on a
regular basis.
But it is holiday time and also there are still some volunteers who are still not fit to
work. We wish them a speedy recovery. Therefore the management committee has
decided the Shop may close for some afternoons during the summer. OR please can
you help? More and more customers are keeping us busy and the Shop is thriving, but
just a temporary shortage of staff!
Further to the suggestion at the AGM regarding a Hog Roast we are proposing to hold
this on Saturday 3rd September from 12 noon to 4pm. Ben Creese will supply half a
pig and all the fixings which will be enough for 100 rolls. To make this an enjoyable
family day out before the children return to school we also intend to hold a Fun
Dog Show, a substantial raffle, some live music and a fantastic jumble sale. We
will also try to get someone to provide pony rides. We will need volunteers for the
following roles:Serving the Hog Roast (we can all take a turn)
A Judge and Steward for the dog show.
Getting pledges for the raffle
Lots of items for the jumble sale i.e. clothes, bric a brac, kitchen tools/gadgets etc.
etc.
We will need to produce a leaflet as soon as possible and then volunteers to deliver
these to as many houses as possible in the area. We could also do with some press
coverage.
The above could be discussed at the next volunteers meeting. As always, we aim to be
a voice for the village, and as such would be delighted to receive any and all
contributions for future newsletters.
