Theatrical Calling
Inspired by a locally renowned director, this 22-year-old stages the Triple Threat
Workshop for Kidsand her 12th production at the helm. { BY MARGIE BARHAM }

The principal cast of 13: The Musical, which is directed by the

talented, young local product, Caitlin Geisser (photo inset), a
protege of the late Mark Melamed.

aitlin Geisser cannot remember a time when

she was not on stage. At five years old, the
Vineland native fell head over heels in love
with theater when she performed in The Sound
of Music at Cumberland Players. By her freshman year of
high school, she was an assistant director alongside her
mentor, the late Mark Melamed. By senior year, she was
directing her very first musical.
At only 22, Geisser is more than a triple-threat herself
as she sings, dances and acts. A graduate of The Southern
New Jersey Academy of the Performing Arts at GCIT, she
spent a year studying musical theater at Catawba College,
and is currently completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts
Degree in Musical Theatre at Wright State University in
Dayton, OH. This fall, she will be Assistant Directing No
No Nannette at WSU, while expanding her studies at
Carnegie Mellon.
I am very grateful for an opportunity to continue to
learn and grow as a director, she explained, adding that
her goal is to get a Masters degree in directing.
With a catalog of performances in her resume, most
recently Geisser played Daisy Buchanan in The Great
Gatsby, Eulalie Shinn in The Music Man, and this summer
Adella with Off-Broad Street Players production of The
Little Mermaid.
I love going back and forth between performing and
directing. I truly believe they inform the other and I am
grateful to be able to work on both, she explained. I am
so excited that 13: The Musical is the 12th show I have
had the pleasure of directing. I keep joking that I wish it
was my 13th to line up with the title. Geisser is also
directing The Drowsy Chaperone for West Deptford
Center Stages. Im a busy, but happy girl.

OLMA Bids Sr. Grace

Marie a Fond Farewell
Surrounded by a crowd of more than 300
students, alumnae, friends, family, and fellow
educators, Sr. Grace Marie Scandale, was
recognized for her 42 years of service to Our
Lady of Mercy Academyfirst as a teacher
and then principal, a title she held for 36
years. The celebration was held on Saturday,
June 25, at The Greenview Inn in Vineland,
and included remarks from OLMA parents,
alumni, and former co-workers.
As long as Sister Grace Marie has been
principal, her door has always been open to
the students to stop in to say hello, or if they
just needed to talk, said Michelle McGrath,
OLMA alumnae and former athletic director.
As OLMA bids Sr. Grace a fond farewell,
the school welcomes Mrs. Brooke A. Coyle
as its new Head of School. Mrs. Coyle comes
to OLMA from St. Augustine Prep where she
has worked for the last 20 years.

Library Youth Poetry

Slam Showcases
Anti-Bullying
The Cumberland County Library AntiBullying Youth Poetry Slam Showcase was
a success. The group dedicated their performances in loving memory of Amy
Joyner Francis, who lost her life due to
bullying. The performers did a great job
reading the poems they wrote. Each performer made their voices heard with confidence in saying "no" to bullying. A musical performance was done by Naomi
Jones. Thank you to Bogart's Bookstore and Cafe for welcoming our group and
hosting us.

Volunteers Make Improvements to Camp

Merrywood Waterfront
A group of local men recently volunteered their time, skills, and energy to
improve the waterfront at the YMCA of
Vinelands Camp Merrywood. Members of
the Vineland Career Firefighter's FMBA
Local 49 and 249, along with Rental
Country owner Gary Galloway and handyman James Muirheid, completed repairs
on the Camps bulkhead. Through donations from Rental Country and Universal
Supply Company, the group was able to
render much-needed repairs to the Camp's
water recreation area. These improvements
included felling trees, digging out sand
behind the bulkhead, and replacing its
wooden structure. These efforts were primarily designed to help protect the beach,
a spot where hundreds of local kids have enjoyed water sports for decades. Camp
Merrywood is located in Pittsgrove, and this years summer sessions began there
on June 20. To register for camp, call 856-691-0030.

Countryside Garden
Club Plants at
Veterans Home

In 2012 the Countryside Garden

Club designed and planted a Blue
Star Memorial Garden at the
Veterans Memorial Home in
Vineland. Blue Star Gardens were
originally begun by the National
Council of Garden Clubs to honor
World War II veterans and in 1951
the mission was enlarged to include
all men and women who had
served or were serving in the
armed forces of the United States.
Garden Club members visualized a
living memorial, preferring to help
beautify and preserve the country
these men and women had fought
for, rather than build stone monuments in their honor.
The Countryside Garden Club
meets the first Thursday of each
month March through December at
various locations to further their
purpose to stimulate an interest in
all aspects of the fine art of gardening and to urge participation in civic
beautification and service, and in
the conservation and preservation
of our natural environment and
wildlife. All of the events and activities sponsored by the Countryside
Garden Club support its annual
scholarship at Cumberland County
College and maintenance of the
Blue Star Garden at the NJ
Veterans Memorial Home. New
members are always welcomed.

Geisser believes that many of her students

will follow acting as a career path. Many plan
to major in theater in some capacity in college
and if not, what they have learned by being a
theater kid will serve them for a lifetime,
she said. Discipline allows for creative success. Anything is possible, and I will always be
their number one cheerleader along the way.
Inspired by her students (whom she refers
to as my kids,), she works alongside artistically fulfilling people and teachers. I am so
lucky to have brilliant friends who I am constantly learning from, she said adding that
she and fellow WSU senior Dakota Mullins
are collaborating on an original project based
on a story she wrote as a child.
I also have the privilege to work alongside two of my very best friends every single
day, said Geisser calling out Choreographer
Marissa Parrott and Musical Director Ally
Beres, a friend since fourth grade. My team
is so talented, and possesses the skills I
dont. It is what makes us so balanced.
13- A New Musical, is the story of Evan
Goldman (played by Scott Bonerbo), who on
the brink of his Bar Mitzvah is forced to
move from the middle of New York City to
Indiana, upon the divorce of his parents.
Once in Indiana he meets Patrice (played by
Natalie Wrigley), a quirky girl who is far from
being a part of the cool crowd. From the first
day of school on, Evan does anything to get
the attention of the popular kids, including
hurting those who mean the most. In the end,
Evan learns the true meaning of friendship.
This is a story our students can easily
identify with, said Geisser. I think adults
will look at this musical and remember the
horrors of being 13, and look back and laugh.
The show itself is witty, laugh-out-loud
funny, the score simply beautiful. We are so
lucky to have such talented kids to bring this
story to life.
Geisser noted that many of the students
have been begging to do this show for a few
years now. We like to hear what they are
passionate about performing. Luckily for
them, I LOVE this show too! I

Mosquito Control Division

Seeks a Proactive Community

the grapevine { 7 }

The Cumberland County Mosquito

Control Division prides itself on controlling
mosquito populations and the potential
health concerns associated with them. To
do so, they deploy a multifaceted approach
that includes biological treatment, source
elimination or reduction, and public education.
The treatment program begins each season, in early March, proactively searching
for mosquito habitats and applying larvicides to stagnant water as needed. In 2015,
Division inspectors treated water in 1,572
locations with 975 pounds of dry material,
20 gallons of liquid material, and 6,062 briquettes. Approximately 16,000 fish, which
eat mosquito larvae, were also used where
appropriate. In response to the heightened
activity of West Nile Virus last year, the
continued activity of Eastern Equine
Encephalitis, and the new threat of Zika
virus in our County, Division staff continues to maintain vigilance in seeking out
mosquitoes and controlling them.
Habitat modification is another important tool in the fight against mosquitoes by
keeping waterways flowing. The Division
employs three heavy equipment operators,
each with their own machine, to minimize
available habitats by removing debris and
silt from the Countys numerous streams
and ditches. With the recent purchase of a
third excavator, the County now has three
machines that operate on a daily basis
throughout the year. In 2015, Division
staff cleaned approximately four miles of
ditches and streams; this quantity should
improve in 2016 with the new equipment.
Another aspect of our program includes
tire removal. The Division has partnered

I News in Brief
Continued from previous page
with the Cumberland County
Improvement Authority to collect discarded tires from public lands. Over 2,000
tires were retrieved from these wooded
areas in a five-month period through the
fall and winter seasons.
The Divisions biggest allies in keeping
mosquito populations low are our residents
and local business owners. Because of this,
they are actively engaging in a campaign to
educate them on mosquito biology, habitat
preference, and control. The Superintendent

is working in conjunction with the County

Health Department to bring the latest information on mosquito-borne viruses, including Zika, to health professionals. In addition,
the biologist is preparing a mobile display
for the municipal offices, which will include
Zika and other arbovirus-related literature.
Also, as inspectors conduct their site visits,
they spend time educating residents about
the dangers of having tires and other frequently used habitats on their properties.

Archaeology Professor Digs

Into Vinelands Past
Dr. Robert Schuyler, associate professor
of archaeology at the University of
Pennsylvania, recently captivated a packed
house at the Vineland Historical and
Antiquarian Society with the story of The
South Jersey Project: Exploring Vineland,
New Jersey.
For over a decade, Schuyler supervised
archaeological digs by student workers
on the grounds of the Societys museum at
108 So. Seventh Street. He explained that
Vineland was selected as a project site
because it was an example of a typical
Victorian town where business and industry grew and prospered within a short period of time. Among the many objects discovered during their excavations, the
researchers discovered embossed bottles,
jewelry, and even personal records that survived years of burial.

The Vineland Jersey Fresh Festival

Committee is looking for artisan vendors interested in being part of this
year's event. All varieties of vendors
are invited to participate including
antique, craft, collectible, and hobby
vendors. The Jersey Fresh Festival,
which celebrates the significant role
that agriculture plays in New Jersey, is
scheduled for Sunday, August 14 from
noon to 6 p.m. on the grounds of
Vineland High (2880 E. Chestnut Ave.).
The new location offers more onsite parking, and the Festival
Committee has added new attractions for Festival attendees. "This
year we will be hosting a classic car
show, an antique farm equipment
display, and a larger area for crafters
and exhibitors," said Jersey Fresh
Festival Committee Member Donata
Dalesandro. "There will also be pony
rides, bouncy houses, fun special
guests, and much more."
The Jersey Fresh Festival Produce
Stand will be selling loose produce
and beautiful baskets throughout the
day. All proceeds raised at the event
are used to fund scholarships for
students majoring in agriculturalrelated fields.
Vendor application fees are $30,
payable to "Jersey Fresh Festival."
Booth spaces measure 10' x 10'.
Vendors must bring their own tables,
chairs, and tents. Payment and registration is due by Friday, August 10.
Vendors should be on-site by 11 a.m
to setup.
Admission to the Jersey Fresh
Festival and parking are free. Food
vendors will be offering a variety of
delicious pay as you eat options.
For more about participating in
the Festival as a vendor, exhibitor, or
volunteer, call 609-364-7108, or visit
VinelandCity.org to download an artisan vendor application.
The 2016 Jersey Fresh Festival is
sponsored by Newfield National
Bank; First Choice Freezer & Cold
Storage; Ace Plumbing, Heating, &
Electrical Supplies; Premier
Orthopaedic Associates; and the
Vineland Produce Auction.

front of a painting of the Virgin Mary.

They also formed a procession in front of
the home. They prayed in thanks for
their safe journey to America, for a successful farming season, and for the blessings and good fortune found in their new
home of Hammonton.
The fact that the festival was established and perpetuated by Italian immigrants was not surprising. Nick DiUlios
2012 New Jersey Monthly article, NJs
Most Italian Town, explains that, during
the settlements early years, the unprecedented Italian influx can be attributed to
one man, an Italian farmer named
Salvador Calabrese who came to
Hammonton in 1863 from tiny Gesso,
Sicily. Calabrese wrote to two of his countrymen in Gesso, petitioning them to come
start farms of their own. Within a few
years, most of the town of Gesso had relocated to Hammonton. Additionally, an
organization called the Italian Labor
Bureau was contracted at the time to
supply Italian day laborers from nearby
Philadelphia to harvest crops and work
the fields.
The workers started purchasing land in
Hammonton and continued to promote
the towns agricultural advantages to their
families in Italy, piquing enough interest
to draw many to this little community.
The New Jersey Monthly article explains
that more than 60 percent of the population of Hammonton had Italian surnames
by 1920 and credits much of the development of the towns garment factories,
which totaled around 12 by 1930, to
Italian-Americans. Tracing the number of
residents with Italian heritage in recent
years, DiUlio reports that, as of 2010,
44.6 percent of Hammontons 14,791 residents are of Italian ancestry, the highest
percentage in New Jersey.
New Jersey Monthly acknowledged the
role of the July 16 festival as well, proclaiming that the standout event on the
calendar is the annual Italian Festival
sponsored by the Our Lady of Mount
Carmel Society. What began in 1875 as a
traditional Roman Catholic two-mile-long
procession of saints has evolved into the
longest-running Italian festival in the
country, with a weeklong carnival and festivities erupting every July. I

ne of Hammontons longstanding traditions has been the religious observance of the Feast
of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
a July 16 daylong celebration couched
within a weeklong festival filled with
food, song and carnival entertainment.
The procession and liturgical services that
accompany the feast day are widely
known, drawing participants from all corners of the country and even some foreign
visitors. And this year, in the midst of the
towns sesquicentennial, the festivals origins and its link to the past should be
more visible than usual.
The day of July 16 is devoted to Our
Lady of Mount Carmel during the week of
festivities, and for many it provides a time
of reflection and prayer. While this
Hammonton event has been an annual tradition for the past 140 years, the religious
connections that make it special to those
who attend actually date back centuries to
the medieval era at the time of the birth of
a new religious order.
It was during the 12th and 13th centuries that a group of Christian hermits
living in the Holy Land on Mount Carmel
erected a chapel dedicated to the Blessed
Virgin Mary. The title they bestowed
upon her was Our Lady of Mount Carmel
and the hermits became the Carmelite
Order.
According to online sources, Our Lady
of Mount Carmel became associated in
the 15th century with the Brown Scapular,
a sign of salvation for the wearer of this
religious item, which consists of two rectangular pieces of cloth connected by a
cloth band. It is reported that Mary, in a
vision, gave such a scapular to an early
Carmelite, Simon Stock and it was added
to the Carmelite attire.
During the 14th century in England,
The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
was originally celebrated on July 17, but
the date conflicted with the European
feast day of Saint Alexis and was changed
to July 16, which has remained the
observed date by the Catholic Church.
Hammontons celebration of the feast
day began 141 years ago in 1875 in a quaint
ceremony at 232 Pine Road where
Antonio Capelli resided. According to the
Mount Carmel Society website, it was at
his home that Capelli along with a small
group of fellow immigrants, prayed in

Buckshutem Road School Awarded Laura Bush

Foundation Grant
Buckshutem Road School has
been awarded a 2016 Laura Bush
Foundation for Americas Libraries
grant. It was announced in May that
Buckshutem would be one of the 130
lucky schools across the country to
receive the grant. The award will go
towards refurbishing Buckshutems
library and its supplies.
We are extremely grateful in
receiving the Laura Bush Grant for
School Libraries. This grant will
assist us in purchasing new books
and other media supplies. It is a perfect addition for the new library and
a wonderful and welcome benefit for
the students, said Derek Macchia,
principal of Buckshutem Road School.
The library will focus on building a digital library to compliment students'
achievement in the areas of technology, college and career readiness and digital
learning. With Laura Bush Foundation funds, the library can begin to build a catalog of eBooks as well as supplement the existing collection of audiobooks. This
will help with the utilization of necessary resources to support the foundation of
lifelong success and prepare students to be contributing members of the global
society.
We are thrilled at the news of the grant. The funds will no doubt help
Buckshutem in its mission to provide necessary outlets for the students in
means of books and supplies, stated Dr. Celeste Merriweather, director of
Funded Programs.
Many students do not have access to their own books at home and only come
into contact with printed texts during the school day. Through more extensive
and higher quality collections and increased access to educational technology,
students at the Buckshutem Road School will experience increased academic
achievement and educational outcomes as they prepare for their futures.
Derek Macchia, Principal of Buckshutem Rd. School and Lugene Trefsger, Media
Specialist, stand smiling in front of the new library recently remodeled for the K through
8 students.

LEGISLATIVE CORNER
Your Advocacy team hosted a meeting with District 1 NJ Senator Jeff Van Drew
at the GVCC office in June. We discussed a variety of issues, such as:
Minimum wage
Estate and inheritance taxes
Proposed increase of gas taxes
Paid sick leave
Plastic bag fees proposed bill
S15 & A15 RAISES MINIMUM WAGE TO $15 / HOUR
**UPDATE** The Assembly and Senate passed this bill. As of this writing, it now
goes to Governor Christies desk. He has stated previously that he will veto the
bill.
This bill proposes to raise the NJ State minimum wage to $15 per hour for 40
hours of working time in any week and 1 times the employees regularly
hourly wage for each hour of working time in excess of 40 hours in any week,
with a few exceptions. This would be phased in over a four year period beginning January 1st 2017 with a minimum wage of $10.10 per hour. It also provides that the minimum wage rate will be increased by any increase in the consumer price index.
S799 PAID SICK LEAVE
**UPDATE** The Senate has passed two amendments to this bill:
1 Exemption for businesses with fewer than 10 employees
2. Clarification that an employee begins to accrue sick leave when the employee
commences employment and shall be eligible to use the earned sick leave
beginning on the 100th calendar day after the employment commences, unless
the employer agrees to an earlier date.
We are pleased regarding these amendments, but remain very concerned about
other aspects of this bill: carrying time over from year to year, uses of sick
leave, conflicts with other existing leave laws, and additional burdens placed on
businesses to document and manage this legislation.

Our most recent Past President Kathy Farinaccio spearheaded an effort to

bring together Past Presidents of the GVCC as an advisory group that will meet
twice per year. In June, they held their inaugural meeting where they informed
the Past Presidents of current activities and strategic goals and discussed future
plans. We are so fortunate to have such talented people still willing to be
involved with our Chamber and their experience, insight and ideas are invaluable to this organization.
