world’s financial markets, as
growing numbers of people are
concluding the debt crisis in
Europe could hammer global
growth — and even bring back
recession barely a year after a
patchy recovery took hold.
Government officials —
whose job it is to boost confi-
dence — downplay that risk,
but many economists are warn-
ing that the much-feared —
“double-dip” recession could
be starting in Europe.

— President Barack Obama
called for first-ever mile-
age and emissions standards
for big rig and work trucks
Friday, seeking to limit pol-
lution from the large vehicles
that contribute a big share
of it.
With a presidential memo-
randum signed in the Rose
Garden, Obama also ordered
federal agencies that have
already brought out new stan-
dards for cars and light trucks
for the 2012-2016 model
years to begin work on even
stronger rules for 2017 and
beyond.
“The disaster in the Gulf
only underscores that even as
we pursue domestic produc-
tion to reduce our reliance
on imported oil, our long-
term security depends on
the development of alterna-
tive sources of fuel and new
transportation technologies,”
the president said.
“I believe that it’s pos-
sible in the next 20 years for
vehicles to use half the fuel
and produce half the pollu-
tion that they do today.”
The directive signed
Friday also calls for the
development of new tech-
nologies to promote plug-in
hybrids and electric vehicles
and a diversified fuel mix
including more biofuels and
natural gas.
The Union of Concerned
Scientists, an environmental
advocacy group, said large
trucks represent only 4 per-
cent of all vehicles on U.S.
highways but consume more
than 20 percent of on-road
transportation fuels. Obama
wants standards developed
for these vehicles beginning
in the 2014 model year, and
lasting through 2018.
Obama last month rolled
out new standards for cars
and light trucks for the 2012-
2016 model years that aimed
at reaching a fleet average
of 35.5 miles per gallon by
2016, nearly 10 miles per
gallon more than the cur-
rent average. Now additional
standards will be developed
further into the future.
Automakers typically
spend years planning and
developing future vehicles
and have sought the certain-
ty of firm standards several
years into the future. General
Motors Co. said in a statement
that “working toward one
strong, yet feasible, national
program helps GM and other
automakers get advanced
technology vehicles to con-
sumers quicker and more cost
effectively.”
Environmentalists have
also pushed for the extension,
saying it would help ensure
strong gas-mileage standards
into the future. The fuel stan-
dards made little progress
during the 1980s and 1990s.
“The years of inaction on
vehicle standards that served
to increase our addiction to
oil are at an end,” said Carl
Pope, chairman of the Sierra
Club.
For the auto industry, uni-
form national standards are
preferable to a state-by-state
approach that has been a
threat ever since California
started pushing years ago to
be allowed more stringent
standards than the federal
government imposes.
California agreed last year
not to adopt its own standards
through 2016 but without
federal action the state was
preparing to impose tougher
requirements beginning in
2017.

special spot on the west side of the
office area.

As a 9-1-1 Coordinator I take this opportunity to thank all
EMS personnel for the work they do and their dedication to
the citizens of Van Wert County as they respond to 9-1-1 calls
for help from citizens and visitors.
I know they care about people and are dedicated to meet-
ing their needs. So today as EMS week is upon us I would
like to say “THANK YOU” to each one of them for caring
about people, for the compassion they share, devotion to
patient care, working long shifts, thinking on their feet to
solve patient problems, the time they put in for training, time
away from their families and making the runs no matter the
time of day or weather they have to deal with, comforting
patient family members, risking their personal safety, last but
not least I thank them for their commitment to the service
they provide.
EMS week is an opportunity for the public to recognize
what they do every day; some for a paycheck, some as vol-
unteers, all because they care and want to help people. What
they do is very important, serving citizens during their time
of need. They provide a necessary service vital for our com-
munity. They are there for everyone when they need them,
doing what is best for them.
In closing I have seen them in action. I know they have
saved lives. I know they care, work hard and deserve to
hear thank you, especially this week. My thank you is weak
compared to what they do and deserve but still I want them
to know they have my thanks and respect every day. They
have my support and I know they will continue to give it their
best.

• K.P. Industries, Ohio Street, has announced plans to
add a 41,000-square-foot addition to the southwest corner
of the existing building. According to Thomas D. Ciminillo,
employee relations manager, the addition will bring the
total square footage under roof to 136,000 square feet. The
Delphos facility manufactures a variety of products for the
automotive “aftermarket.”
• St. John’s High School’s two-member team of Ben
Fischer and Dave Vasquez placed first in the state in
Division III of the Ohio Tests of Scholastic Achievement.
The school received a trophy from the Ohio Department
of Education.
• Lincolnview High School graduation ceremonies will
be June 2 in the high school auditorium. Fifty-eight students
will be graduating. The classes’ top two students are Sharon
Yakos and Beth Jones. Scholarship awards will be presented
after the commencement and class honor addresses. The
acceptance of diplomas will be by senior class president,
local history room in Fort Jennings for both Ancestry and Heritage Quest.

Ancestry is beginning to cover high
school year books. The nearest from
this area is Findlay High School.
Heritage Quest covers much of the
same material but it concentrates more
on records in the US, while Ancestry
goes world wide.
The 1930 Census is not yet complete
on Ancestry. The 1940 census will
come out in 2012.

some credit risk in their loans,
and compelled home buyers
to put a downpayment on
their loans.
If anything, however, the
political environment has
grown more populist since the
House passed its legislation
in December — a trend that
will likely protect the tougher
provisions in both bills.
Here’s a broad look at ele-
ments of the bill and what
they do and don’t do to avoid
a repeat of a financial crisis:
LENDING:
In passing its sweeping
rewrite of financial regula-
tions, the Senate does not
embrace Shakespeare’s admo-
nition: “Neither a borrower
nor a lender be.”
But it makes it tougher.
Mortgage brokers won’t be
able to make money on high
interest loans; buyers won’t
be able to lie about their abil-
ity to pay as loan officers look
the other way.
The Senate rejected a pro-
posal that would have required
home buyers to place a mini-
mum 5 percent downpayment
on their mortgages. It also
rolled back a provision that
would have required lenders
who sell their mortgages to
hold 5 percent of the credit
risk as “skin in the game,”
designed to ensure they wrote
safe loans. Instead, lenders
who write loans that meet
strict underwriting stan-
dards could sell their loans
and avoid the risk retention
requirement.
Lending would be over-
seen by a new agency.
The House sets up a stand-
alone Consumer Financial
Protection Agency with rule
writing powers. The Senate
sets up an independent bureau
within the Federal Reserve
and its rules could be vetoed
by the oversight council of
regulators. House Financial
Service Committee Chairman
Barney Frank indicated the
agency would not likely end
up in the Fed, but otherwise
said the authorities of the two
entities were similar.
“I thought we’d have a
major fight over the indepen-
dence of the CFPA,” he said.
“Not a problem.”
Fixing the government-
sponsored mortgage giants
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
was put off for another day.
The two companies low-
ered their standards for bor-
rowers during the housing
boom and now those high-
risk loans are defaulting at a
record pace. The government
has been forced to rescue them
to the tune of $145 billion.
Administration officials
have said an overhaul of the
two will be a priority next
year. And, as a Band-Aid
measure, the Senate approved
a provision ordering a study,
which is already under way at
Treasury.
“What we did — and I
would be the first to admit it,
being the author of the provi-
sion — is fairly anemic in light
of what we need to be doing,”

even a good teammate.
The way he sees it, that’s
“ridiculous.”
The big center from
Kentucky was out to prove
he’s not really a bad guy and
maybe boost his standing at
the NBA’s draft combine this
week.
While fellow Wildcat
John Wall and Ohio State’s
Evan Turner figure to go to
Washington and Philadelphia
with the top two picks next
month, the next few spots
appear to be up for grabs.
The New Jersey Nets select
third; Cousins could be a can-
didate along with Georgia

Nix had three hits, includ-
ing a tie-breaking double in
the sixth inning, leading the
Cincinnati Reds to a 7-4 win
over the slumping Cleveland
Indians on Friday
night.
The Reds
bounced back
from a stunning
defeat in Atlanta
on Thursday when
they failed to hold
a 7-run lead in the ninth
inning and closer Francisco
Cordero gave up a game-
ending, pinch-hit grand slam
to Brooks Conrad in a 10-9
loss. The homer deflected off
over the top of the wall.
Shin-Soo Choo, moved
from third to second in the bat-
on June 24 to make his case
and convince a team like the
Nets to match him up front
with Brook Lopez instead of
Favors. To some, that would
be a bold step for new owner
Mikhail Prokhorov if
New Jersey kept the
pick.
The 6-10 Favors was
the ACC rookie of the
year for Georgia Tech
after ranking second
on the team in scoring
(12.4 points a game) and
rebounds (8.4). He com-
pares himself to Amare

He averaged 15.1 points

a question,” he said.
“It’s always about the
red flag. My game’s
not a question. It’s just
a perception.”
The red flag stems
from concerns about
his focus and body
language. He didn’t
always get back on
defense and his tem-
per boiled over when
he threw a forearm at Jared
Swopshire of Louisville in a
nationally-televised game.
His weight is an issue, too.
Cousins is on a seafood
and salad diet in an effort
to improve his conditioning;
he’s incorporated boxing into
his training regimen.
“If you talk to any of my
teammates, you’ll get a posi-
tive answer back,” he said.
Yet he understands some
view him as sort of the vil-
lain of this draft and even had
some fun with it.
He recalled Calipari told
him to “come in and smile.”

the top Northwest Conference
Track and Field athletes for
2010 and the conference-cham-
pion coach is named
Coach of the Year.
Spencerville junior
Kevin Lenhart was
voted Male Athlete of
the Year by NWC track
coaches after winning
three events and leading the
Bearcats to the boys
track title at the NWC
meet held last Saturday
at Spencerville.
Lenhart won the
1,600-meter run in a time
of 4:33.03, the 3,200-meter run
in 10:11.14 and anchored the
4x800-meter relay team to a
first-place finish in 8:30.36.
Lenhart received four votes
for the AOY honor, edging
out Columbus Grove’s Dylan
Vogt (3 votes) and Bluffton’s
Drew Luginbuhl (3
votes).
The 2010 NWC
Female Athlete of
the Year in track
is Jefferson junior
Bridget Culp. Culp had four
first-place finishes for the
Wildcats on Saturday. She
won the 100-meter dash in
12.67 and the 200-meter dash
in 26.19. She also anchored the
4x100- and 4x200-meter relay
teams for the Wildcats. They
set NWC meet records in those
events with times of 50.29 and
1:46.93.
Culp received seven of the
10 votes for the AOY honor.
Spencerville’s Kelli Ley
received the other three votes.
After Spencerville captured
the NWC titles in both boys
and girls track at the confer-
ence meet, Bearcat coach
Bruce McConnell was voted

He asked: “Which one
would you take, a nasty big
man or a friendly one?”
And he talked about his
childhood dream of playing in
the NFL. There was one small
problem, though.
“I was terrible,” he said.
He played “everywhere.”
“I wasn’t that good but
they just put me in spots,”
Cousins said.
He stopped playing football
after the seventh grade and
took up basketball as an eighth-
grader. It didn’t take him long
to realize he could make a
living at it and he insisted he’s
more versatile than most peo-
ple realize, that he can face
up and doesn’t have to anchor
himself in the post.
“Cal wanted me to play
with my back to the basket, so
that’s what I did,” he added.
With a 7-6 wingspan and
almost automatic ability to fin-
ish down low, Cousins could
simply be nasty for opponents
if he keeps his nasty side in
check. If he does, others can
pick up those red flags.
Note: Favors said he met
with San Antonio, which
holds the 20th pick. “I feel like
they’re trying to make a move
to try to get me,” he added.

Brantley tells of life on Monkey Mountain

DELPHOS — When
Delphos resident Glen
Brantley graduated from high
school in 1966, the world was
his oyster. He chose to see
it by enlisting in the Marine
Corps but before his travels
began, he had to first visit a
little place called Paris Island,
NC.
After drill instructors
molded the recruit into a
Marine, Brantley received
additional infantry train-
ing at Camp Geiger, NC.
He attended air-traffic con-
trol school at the recruit
depot in San Diego. Then,
“the Corps” sent him to
Yuma, AZ, for more than
two years. At that point,
Brantley shipped out to a
global hot spot that was no
vacation: Vietnam.
He had been trained to
man radar equipment to help
pilots navigate in “dog fights”
but he never used the comput-
ers for anything but takeoffs
and landings, explaining that
the enemy had no aircraft as
far as he knew.
“Every day was just like
any work day. When I got
there, I did mess duty for
