Part 1: Assessment Technology

The website I chose to create my assessment on is Socrative. Socrative is a great website

and really provides a simple way to create a quiz. You are able to choose what kind of questions
you would like to create, including the options of multiple choice, true or false and short answer.
The quiz that I created is ten questions long and mainly consists of multiple choice, with three
true or false questions as well. I intended on the quiz to be a formative assessment, as I just want
to see what my students know and understand after they take the quiz. One day I will use this
website when I am a real teacher and create quizzes and assessments for my students. To get to
the quiz I made please go to https://b.socrative.com/teacher/#my-quizzes. Once you reach this
website, look at the top left of the page where you see the word Dashboard and click on the
four connecting circles above it. You will then type the room name (BPLVQPPF) under
student and then after the room name (BPLVQPPF) is typed in click join room and begin
the assessment.

Part 2: Blog Post
Introduction
Teachers all over the world, have one of many things in common. One thing is that all
teachers create and provide assessments to their class. This is an important part of the classroom
because it allows a teacher to know where there students progress is at in class. Quizzes allow
teachers to see if a student is struggling, allowing the teacher to put more effort into a student
who may be in more need than another. It also allows a teacher to see which students are
exceling in class, so the teacher is able to provide extra work for them to practice. Whatever the
case may be, assessments are o value to both the student and teacher. There are many different

websites that provide ways for teachers to create their own quizzes or assessments. The resources
that can help a teacher create an assessment are, socrative, questbase, and polleverywhere.
Technology to Facilitate Ongoing Efforts to Assess Student Learning
Teachers can utilize technology to facilitate ongoing efforts to assess student learning in a
number of ways. Since teachers have access to the internet, they have access to different
programs that technology has to offer. Teachers are able to create assessments with online
programs and present them to the class. Teachers are then able to do a number of things with
them. First, a teacher can create a formative assessment and put it on the smart board. That
teacher can then provide his or her class with clickers and then those students are able to answer
the questions. This provides teachers stats that will allow them to see how their students are
progressing in class. Second, a teacher could create a quiz online and then print it out and pass it
out to students. These can be used as a formative or summative assessment. There are many
different softwares that allow a teacher to create different types of assessments and quizzes. It
all depends on the teacher, and what they believe that their students learning styles are. Knowing
where a student is at in their learning is one of the most important roles a teacher can have.
Student success is always number one. Clarifying, sharing, and understanding learning
intentions and criteria for success (Dyer, 2015)

Socrative
This specific software allows teachers to create their own assessments for students. The
outcome of the experiment was analyzed quantitatively based on student performance and
qualitatively through student questionnaire. The results indicate that using student paced
assessments method using Socrative enhanced students performance. The results showed that

53% of the students improved their performance while 23% neither improved nor
underperformed. (Dakka, 2015) Teachers are able to create an assessment on whatever they
need to for the class. Once they do so, they give the assessment to his or her students. It is up to
the teacher is their students is able to see if they got their answers immediately or if they have to
wait for the teacher to view it first. For example, if a teacher creates a ten question quiz on
spelling, the teacher can either pass out laptops to students in the class, so they are able to
complete the assessment. The teacher can also print it out and pass it out to the class, for them to
complete with their pencil. Once completed the teacher can grade them and then pass them back
out so that the students are aware of their grade.
Questbase
Questbase is a program that teachers use to create assessments. With this software,
teachers are able create tests, exams, quizzes and surveys. Designed as a training and learning
tool, QuestBase can also be used for selection tests, psychological tests, satisfaction and opinion
surveys, market researches and customer feedback (questbase, 2016) Teachers could use this
specific software to access student learning in many ways. When a teacher passes out any form
of assessment to their students, they are testing how 1, the student preforms, and 2, what can be
done to help the student get a better understanding. With this software it is easy to monitor
student performances. These tests can be given formatively or in summative form. For example,
a teacher is getting ready to wrap up the school year and has one final test for his or her class.
The teacher creates summative test, which the students are aware of. Once the teacher grades the
assessments, it will be put into the grade book as a solid grade, rather than just making it a
formative assessment.

Polleverywhere
Polleverywhere is an awesome program that does not really do much summative
assessments, however it is large on formative ones. It is focused around surveys. A teacher is able
to create a scenario, and have students respond to it with which one they believe is the best, or
correct. For instance, a teacher can create a poll asking a student what their favorite animal is.
The teacher would then provide three or four choices and see what students picked more of,
seeing the overall favorite of the class. This is a fun way to get and keep students engaged in
their lesson and also allows teachers to get instant overall feedback and the best part is that it can
even be used from a cell phone, just text the answer to the number given and the answer will
appear on the poll.
Formative and Summative Assessments
By definition from the dictionary, a formative assessment is including diagnostic testing,
is a range of formal and informal assessment procedures conducted by teachers during the
learning process in order to modify teaching and learning activities to improve student
attainment. And a summative assessment refers to the assessment of participants where the
focus is on the outcome of a program. This contrasts with formative assessment, which
summarizes the participants' development at a particular time. In other words, a formative
assessment is a test given by a teacher to track how well a student is doing in the class, but it is
not necessarily taken as a real test grade. A summative assessment is the real deal. This is when
the student is given an assessment that has to do with students completing a test in a timely order.
This is more of a proper test. Socrative allows teachers to create formative and summative
assessments. Whereas questbase focusses more on summative assessments, though a teacher

could create a formative assessment with this website as well. Polleverywhere is strictly for
formative assessments.
Pros and Cons of using Technology to Facilitate Assessment
While using technology to facilitate assessment is awesome for students, it always has its
pros and cons. Pros of this would be that it improves authenticity and it has room for change due
to different students learning styles. Cons of this type of learning would be that it takes up a lot
of teacher time and also it can always malfunction, making the test unavailable when needed.
(University of Reading, 2011)
Should a teacher only use technology to assess student learning? Why or why not?
A teacher should not only use technology to assess student learning. This is because
although technology allows a variety of uses, it does not always properly work or available.
Technology gets very costly. There is nothing wrong with using old fashioned paper and pencil.
It gives students a break from the screens and allows them to show their true colors on paper.
What is the importance of assessment technology in connection with the ISTE standards?
It is important for assessment technology to be in connection with the ISTE standards.
This is because these standards are the basic fundamentals that need to be accomplished in the
classroom. Standards that would fit this are all of the teacher standards. These include one,
facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity. Two, design and develop digital age learning
experiences and assessments. And lastly, three, model digital age work and learning. (ISTE,
2016)

Concluding Paragraph for Software to Support Assessment

Assessments are one of the most important things in class that a student could do. It
allows a teacher to see how a student is learning and understanding class lessons and materials.
They also can be given in different forms, causing either more or less pressure to a student.
Meaning there could be formative assessments or summative assessments, both which are
different. Socrative is a great software to create a quiz on for students in the classroom. Teachers
are able to create questions and then make either multiple choice, true or false and short answer
responses. Another great software is questbase. While teachers are able to create formative
assessments with this, it is mainly aimed towards summative assessments. These type of
assessments are used more when a teacher wants to put in a set grade. Lastly, polleverywhere is a
great formative assessment. It allows a teacher to create a question and then have all children in
the class answer seeing which answer received the most percentage. There are so many different
softwares that can be used to enhance the use of assessments in the classroom. A solid
academic paper always ends with a conclusion to summarize what was discussed in the paper
and why it is important. This should be in your own words with no citations.
