1.0 Purpose:
This Procedure is intended to provide guidance and instructions for carrying out the
Vacuum Pump Start-up Operation
2.0 Scope:
1. This Procedure is applicable to Vacuum Pump.
Total 3 Nos Pumps (2W+1SB)
3.0 Responsibility:
1. All the personnel involved in carrying out /supervising the above activities are
required to ensure implementation of this procedure.
2. In the event of any changes required in the procedure such changes may be
requested with Site in charge who would take appropriate action with approval
from respective departmental heads.
4.0 SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MEASURES / CHECKS:

Ensure coupling guard of all the pumps is properly fixed.

Ensure proper earthing connections of motor.
Work area should be clean & no oil, grease splitting should be there.
Safety signs should be marked wherever required.
5. Readiness of fire fighting equipments.
5.0 CHECKLIST:
1. Ensure all work permits on Turbine, condenser, Gland Steam, GSC Fans, Vacuum
Pumps and Recirculation Pumps are cancelled.
2. Ensure healthiness of electrical system related with vacuum pump & Recirculation
Pump.
3. Make sure that the air side manual valves of condenser are open.
4. Make sure that the vacuum breaker valve of condenser is closed.
5. Ensure sealing water supply to vacuum breaker valve is normal.
6. Check that the water level and the water temperature of vacuum pump separator
are normal & its make up side v/v is open with supply to its level control solenoid
v/v & level switch. Also ensure its operation is in Auto.
7. Make sure that the inlet valve of vacuum pump is closed & its manual isolation v/v
is in open condition.
8. Start the CEP to fill water to the water separator of vacuum pump A and B to
normal level.

9. Open the cooling water inlet valve of cooler of vacuum pump A and B gradually.
After the air in the cooler of vacuum pump A and B is discharged completely, close
the air exhaust valve and open the outlet valve of the cooler completely.
10. Ensure lubricating oil level to the bearings of pumps is normal.
11. Ensure Reheater vent is in closed condition.
12. Ensure Gland steam Condenser is charged from water side.
13. Ensure Turbine in Barring Gear.
14. Ensure Cooling water system in service.

Separator Tank should be filled up to normal level.

Start the vacuum pump from DCS after getting start permissive.
Start recirculation pump from DCS.
Monitor the current, temperature & vibration.
Suction pneumatic butterfly valve should open automatically when vacuum
reached (<- 88KPa) between vacuum pump & butterfly valve.
6. Ensure separator level is maintained by the makeup line SOV.
7. When the Vacuum reaches -0.2 kg/cm2, Start the Gland Steam Condenser Exhaust
Fan and then charge the Gland sealing steam to Turbine and TDBFPs.
8. Put the standby pump in Auto, if the pump meets the starting lineup conditions.
9. Examine the regulations of level in water separator and the working conditions of
cooler.
10. Check out and record the working parameters regularly during the running period
of vacuum pump.

8.0 SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the standby selection for standby vacuum pump.
2. Stop the Vacuum pump from DCS and suction pneumatic butterfly valve closes
automatically as the pump stops.

10.0 ISOLATION PROCEDURE:

Remove the stand by pump from interlock & Stop Vacuum pump from DCS.
Ensure Inlet valve of vacuum pump will get close.
Stop the Recirculation pump.
Rack out 415 V vacuum pump breaker & lock the pump from DCS.
Isolate the air inlet manual isolation valve & lock the pneumatic air inlet valve from
DCS.
6. Isolate the CW I/O valve of cooler ,isolate make up to separator tank
7. Open the vent and drain the cooler & pump.
8. Ensure all the isolations completed and then issue the permit as per the approved
procedure.
11.0 EMERGENCY OPERATION OF VACUUM PUMP:
Vacuum Decreases:
1. Check vacuum pump separator level is normal otherwise make-up water up to
Normal Level.
2. Check sealing water supply to vacuum breaker valve is normal.
3. Check gland sealing supply Pr. And temp to main turbine is normal.
4. If still vacuum is dropping, start standby vacuum pump.
5. Stop the pump and PTW may be issued for cooler backwashing.
6. GSC exhaust fan vibration or current is high check level of G.S.C, if level is high
open emergency drain of GSC. Check GSC exhaust fan body drain and open it.
7. Check the Valve gland sealing pressure.
If the separator water level high:
1. Check the over flow.
