Natural vs. Added Sugar

Natural sugar is sugar that is naturally occurring in foods such as fructose in


fruit or lactose in dairy.

Added sugar is any sugar that is added to food during processing. Excess
added sugar in the diet increases the risk of obesity and cardiovascular
disease.

Identifying added sugar


The only way to know if there is added
sugar is to look at the ingredients list.
Some common names for added sugar
include:

Dextrose

Confectioners/Powdered Sugar

Maltose
Fructose
Glucose
Cane Juice/Syrup
Corn Syrup/High Fructose Corn
Syrup

Recommendations

Honey
Malt Syrup
Molasses
Maple Syrup

Tips for limiting added sugar

Drink water instead of sugary


beverages

Try infused water

Dilute 100% fruit juice with


water.

Choose fresh fruit for a dessert.
