GENERAL

CONCEPT

TAVRIDA ELECTRIC proudly presents its world famous

series of vacuum circuit breakers with magnetic
actuators. TAVRIDA ELECTRIC vacuum circuit breakers
have been designed for use in metal-enclosed
switchgear utilizing the modern concept of cassette
design. The small overall dimensions allow the vacuum
circuit breakers to be easily integrated into any type of
cassette available on the market. In addition to the
primary application, the vacuum circuit breakers can
be used for various retrofit projects (please refer to
Universal Retrofit Solutions). More than 300,000
TAVRIDA ELECTRIC vacuum circuit breakers are
currently in operation in almost 100 countries
worldwide.

Every TAVRIDA ELECTRIC vacuum circuit breaker has two

essential building blocks:
Indoor switching modules (ISM) used to open and close
primary circuits;
Control modules (CM) used to provide control (close and
trip operations) and monitoring of ISM.
When applied to any switchgear, both building blocks (one
switching module and one control module) are used. The
ability to select switching and control modules separately
allows any type of switchgear to be easily customized for
both primary and secondary circuits.

Today these vacuum circuit breakers are

available with rated voltage up to 24 kV,
rated current up to 2500A and rated shortcircuit breaking current up to 31,5 kA.
TAVRIDA ELECTRIC vacuum circuit breakers have been
type-tested in various internationally recognized
testing laboratories such as KEMA in Netherlands,
CESI in Italy, IEL in Poland, etc.

ADVANTAGES
These modules are the result of many years of R&D by
TAVRIDA ELECTRIC scientists and engineers. Their integration

SWITCHING MODULE DESIGN

In contrast to most conventional circuit breakers, this
patented design incorporates three independent magnetic
actuators (one per pole). This minimizes the number of
moving parts, all of which are located symmetrically about
the central axis.
The vacuum interrupters (VI) are embedded in a polymeric
cover to increase their external dielectric strength. Stationary
contacts of the VIs are fixed to upper contact terminals. The
actuator armatures are coupled to the moving contacts of the
VIs by linear pulling insulators through the contact pressure
and opening springs. This structure provides direct linear
movement in both directions and avoids the use of rotating
shafts, bearings and bell cranks. The movable system is
covered by support insulators. The result is a maintenancefree vacuum circuit breaker with a long robust mechanical
life.

A synchronizing shaft connects the three poles and performs

three functions:
Opening synchronization of the poles;
Operation of the auxiliary switches;
Link-motion drive for mechanical interlocks of
switchgear.
The actuator is held in its two end positions without the use of
mechanical latches.
In the OPEN position the armature is held by the opening
spring.
In the CLOSED position the armature is held by the
magnetic flux produced by the stator.

INTEGRATED ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL INTERLOCKS

The interlocking mechanism of TAVRIDA ELECTRIC vacuum
circuit breakers (VCB) is based on the operation of an
interlocking shaft that can be rotated clockwise or
counterclockwise. When the interlocking shaft is rotated
clockwise, the VCB is prepared to accept the Close and Open
instructions. This is the Release position of the VCB. When
the shaft is rotated in the opposite direction, i.e.
counterclockwise, the VCB shifts to the Open and Locked
position. If the switching module is closed, rotation of the
interlocking shaft from the Released position to the Open
and Locked position leads to the manual tripping of the
module (and, afterwards, mechanical blocking of the
actuator in the Open and Locked position by a cam).
At this point, the electrically interlocking micro-switch opens
and as a result, disconnects the actuator coils from the
control module. In addition to the micro-switch, the cam
mechanically prevents the module from closing.

POSITION INDICATOR WITH A FLEXIBLE CABLE LINK

The mechanical position indicator is a visual indication of the
state of the VCB position (Closed/Open). A flexible cable
link simplifies indicator mounting on switchgear or draw-out
unit for easy viewing.

CONTROL MODULE DESIGN

The control module is intended for actuator operations using
the energy stored in the closing and opening capacitors. It is
an intelligent, microprocessor-based device capable of
providing optimal control of the magnetic actuators
irrespective of the quality of external power or environmental
effects. The module also incorporates monitoring features
providing supervision of the state of the magnetic actuator
coil circuit as well as self-monitoring functionality.
The control modules are totally enclosed in an extruded
aluminum housing designed for simple, flat surface, 4-hole
mounting.
On the front panel there are:
LED indicators that report on the self-monitoring system
of the control module;
Selector switches to set rated current (not for all
modules);
WAGO cage clamps for small wiring terminations.

OPERATION
To close the vacuum interrupter contacts, a current pulse
derived from the closing capacitor in the control module is
injected into the actuator coil. The current in the coil produces
a magnetic flux in the gap between the stator and the
armature. Under electromagnetic attraction, the armature,
pulling insulator and moving contact begin to move towards
the stator and compress the opening spring. At contact, the
moving contact stops while the armature continues to travel
for 2 mm compressing the contact pressure spring. At the
limit of its travel, the armature latches magnetically to the
stator. The armature and the stator are made of magnet steel.
The coil current saturates the armature and the stator to
increase their power to a level that generates the flux to hold
the armature in the CLOSED position after the coil current has
been cut off.
To open the interrupter, a current of opposite polarity,
derived from the opening capacitor in the control module, is
passed through the coil and demagnetizes the permanent
magnets. Opposing forces from the charged springs cause
the armature to release and accelerate rapidly, ensuring a
high interrupting capacity. At full travel, the armature moving
contact assembly is held open by the force of the opening
spring.
The switching module may be manually opened by rotating
the synchronizing shaft.
VCB manual closing can only be carried out through the
control module with the aid of a manual closing generator
supplied by TAVRIDA ELECTRIC.
The manual closing generator charges the closing and
opening capacitors of the control module. Having once
charged the capacitors, the control module is ready to close
the switching module automatically.
Please note! The manual closing generator provides
exceptional safety to the operator when compared to
the manual closing mechanisms of conventional circuit
breakers. The operator can step aside from the
switchgear panel a safe distance before rotating the
generator to close the VCB. This totally eliminates the
risk of personal injury resulting from an internal arc flash.
