InastatementonWednesday,KMUsaidthatataround12:05am,
unidentifiedgunmenopenedfirethecampsetupbytheagricultural
workers.
Thestrafingincidentnearlykilledthreetradeunionistswhomanned
thecamp.Eight.45caliberemptyshellcasingswererecoveredafter
theincident,thegroupsaid.Asidefromthestrafingincident,KMU
saidthattherewasalsoanattemptedarsonreportedonMarch15.
ThispromptedCarloOlalo,secretarygeneralofKMUSouthern
Mindanao,tocallontheDepartmentofLaborandEmployment
(Dole)tointerveneinordertopreemptanyuntowardincidentas

workersareplanningtoholdastrikeafter52bananaworkerswere
sackedillegallyfollowingtheirrefusaltosignnewcontractswiththe
company.
Theunionisfightingforthereinstatementofthe52workers.After

anoverwhelmingyestostrikevotelastMarch28,Olalosaid.

commitmenttoprotecttherightsofworkerstoorganizeand
freedomofassociation.
TheDOLEissleepingonthecaseofMusahamatworkersanditcan
nolongerpretendthatnothingishappening.Duringthecertification
election,theunionwasvictimofvilificationandmilitary
interventionandtheDOLEdidnothing.Bybeingsilent,itisbeing
complicitintheapparentcampaigntosilencetheworkersin
Pantukanbyanymeanspossible,includingmurder,Olalopointed
out.
KMUhitboththeMusahamatFarm2andtheArmys46thInfantry
BattalionoftheArmedForcesofthePhilippinesforcontinuingits

Wedenouncethisattemptedmurderoftradeunionistsbarelya
