General Learning Goal for the Unit: Students will:

qInvestigate and make sense of the relationship between vertical height and horizontal length.
qUnderstandslopewithinthecontextofaratiorepresentingaconstantrateofchange.
qFindtheslopeofalinegiventhecoordinatesoftwopointsontheline.
qUse linear functions to analyze situations and solve problems.
qConnect the learning of slope to real life.
Description of assessment purpose, activity, and follow-up action. The assessment activities are tied to learning objectives and will
Assessments measure if students adequately achieved these learning objectives. Assessment activities include a brief Reflection Paper as a followup item, quizzes, class discussion, worksheets, homework, and a test.

Formative
Pretest

Vocabulary matching pretest on attitudes and prior experience with vocabulary and concepts. A worksheet will be
distributed where students are asked to match each of the terms below with their definitions. The key terms that
students will be asked to match to their definition are: x-axis, y-axis, origin, ordered pair, units, independent and
dependent variable, and Pythagorean Theorem.
Action: Worksheet answers will be presented to the class by their fellow students.

Students will write a brief Reflection Paper of 1-2 Paragraphs summarizing the basic ideas of the lesson with
example(s); and, optionally, include their thoughts on the topic and any qiuestions they have.
Action: Questions raised or misconceptions that arise from the reflection paper will be addressed at the start of the
following lesson.

Observe students & ask questions daily to assess how they are engaging, how well they understand daily work, and
misconceptions. Andectodal records will be taken to document progress of language use. Open-ended questions of
all levels of Bloom's will be asked of students. Student interviews, as needed, may take place. Activities including

questioning be asked to 'think aloud' as they demonstrate their work to classmates.

Action: Student pairs may be changed according to level of mastery.

Homework

Homework on applications of learning following first day of each lesson. Action: look for accurate and fluent use of
technical language and concept understanding. Credit given is full/partial or no credit for attempted respones.
Homework wil be assigned from the textbook where students are asked to solve problems after reading the
relevant section of the book.
Action: Give written wise criticism. Homework will be scored the following day and additional feedback will be
provided as necessary.Students may be asked to see the teacher if there is a serious problem with the homework.
