Work on Preserving the Past stays on task

CAROL V. SPRING
SPECIAL TO ACTIVE LIVING

Many people have ideas and good

intentions about writing up family stories but cannot seem to persevere. Attending a group on a weekly basis, and
getting support and encouragement
from the other participants, is a way to
stay on task with selected projects.
Over the years, Preserving the
Past participants have been able to
complete memoirs, family histories,
travelogues, photo or scrapbook albums, compilations of creative work,

poetry, short stories and other narratives.

While in search for a volunteer instructor, the group continues to meet
and provide support and assistance to
one another. The group welcomes anyone who would like to join them, on a
space available basis, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Wednesdays. Bring a thumb drive with
a copy of your writing project. You may
also bring your own laptop if you prefer.

writing memoirs and documenting family
stories and genealogy. An ideal instructor

TSC celebrates accomplishments

Bucket List
Reunion Luncheon

SHEILA SALYER
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF
TALLAHASSEE SENIOR FOUNDATION

As I approach this 20th anniversary

as director of the Tallahassee Senior
Center and 30 years serving seniors, I
feel humbled by all who have made possible the success of TSC and senior services in Tallahassee.
For 30 years, I have been privileged to
meet Tallahassees greatest generation
and baby boomers. As a boomer myself,
some of my best friends and mentors are
15-plus years my age. I grew up in Ashland, Kentucky, on the same street as
both sets of grandparents, and I am
grateful that my lifes work allows me to
invest in the quality of life of older
adults-as well as my own.
Shortly after relocating to Tallahassee in 1985, I became senior volunteer coordinator for the organization known today as Elder Care Services. Several volunteers I met there are also frequent
participants at TSC, making my transition fairly smooth in 1996 when I became
TSC director. Those friends, along with
many new ones, have helped expand TSC
programs and strengthen this organization seen by many as second home and
family.
The city opened TSC in 1978 after five
years of advocacy by a dedicated advisory council led by Margaret Lynn Duggar.
I was fortunate to join a well-established
organization in a landmark known as
The Old Armory on North Monroe. Immediate past director Johnnye Luebkemann had already brought statewide
recognition to TSC by receiving the Flo
Goldmann Award for outstanding senior
center.
One directive then-supervisor Brenda Tanner gave me was, Put us on the
map nationally. Using the National Institute of Senior Centers Self-Assess-

ment Manual and input from stakeholders, we developed a plan that continues
evolving today as we add new programs.
TSC is now nationally accredited and
widely known as one of the top centers
for programming, thanks to the staff,
Advisory Council, and Foundation
Board. Through the years, these three
legs, if you will, create a vibrant
atmosphere, welcoming active adults
from all walks of life to celebrate their
senior years.
These groups work side-by-side as an
amazing team. The dedicated staff pour
their passion into their work. An active
senior advisory council acts as eyes and
ears for participants. A committed
board of directors raises funds to support multiple programs, including Leon

County support since 2002. And the

steady foundation for it all is the City of
Tallahassee.
As I reflect on our success, there are
many ways to measure it: more participants, more programs and activities,
more staff, more locations, and more
sponsors and partners. In 20 years, we
have expanded from a single location to
13 sites throughout the county, and from
80 activities each month to more than
180. TSC grew from having one computer in the building, to 30 work stations for
both staff and participants. We offer
long-running annual events like Active
Living Expo, Ice Cream Social, and Silver Stars, as well as newer programs
such as TALL senior leadership, L3X
lifelong learning, and Senior Games.

Tallahassee believes in our mission to

encourage active living, optimal aging,
and social fitness for independent adults
so that quality of life can be extended as
long as possible. Our mission continues
with the Citys support, a strong nonprofit TSC Foundation, Leon County, and
thousands of individual and business donors.
And were not finished yet. Like most
baby boomers, I have a bucket list with
places to go, people to see, and goals to
achieve. We look forward to building another senior center to offer more opportunities for recreation, lifelong learning,
art, and wellness activities. And much
more.
Whether youre part of our past, present, or futureyou are invited to our
Bucket List Reunion Luncheon at TSC on
Monday, Aug. 29, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Together, well celebrate our accomplishments and look forward to checking
items off our #TSCbucketlist; call 850891-4041 to join us.

Stay fit, avoid falls in 2016

BENSE FELIX
AND CHANTALLE GEFFRAUD
HEALTH & WELLNESS INTERNS

Half of 2016 remains and theres still

time to dust off your fitness resolutions
and make exercise and fitness part of
your optimal aging regimen. BrainBody-Balance classes, taught by certified instructors, are designed to help you
reach your fitness goals with the added
perk of preventing falls.
Instructor and personal trainer
Kathy Gilbert is one of Tallahassees fitness gems! She developed and teaches
weekly Brain-Body-Balance classes at
the Senior Center and two outreach sites
Allegro and Optimist Park. The class
focus is primarily on preventing future
falls, often the beginning of a slippery
slope into losing ones independence.

The curriculum involves exercises

that improve balance, coordination,
muscle strength and memory. Classes include the use of resistance bands and exercise balls, and conclude with memory
and cognition activities.
In between, there is a lot of laughter
and fellowship. Kathy states, Folks tell
me that they feel physically stronger,
more flexible, focused and coordinated.
Kathy continues, Participants often regain the ability to do some things thought
they no longer could.
Every Tuesday afternoon Wendy Barber, a certified health and fitness coach,
can be found at the Southwood Community Center teaching her rendition of
Brain-Body-Balance. The mission of
Wendys class is to promote a stronger
connection between brain and body
through strength and balance exercises.

Since her class has started, ongoing participants have self-reported that they
fall less and feel better.
Wendy coaches an intimate group in
SouthWoods Community Center; her
class is open to all members of the community. Wendy says, If youre in the
area and looking for a great workout,
please join us! If you rest, you rust!
Whether you are looking for an inti-

mate or large group class designed to

help you maintain your resolution of optimal fitness and independence, the
Brain-Body-Balance classes offered at
the Tallahassee Senior Center and outreach sites, may be the perfect option!

NICK GANDY
FLORIDA SPORTS FOUNDATION

There was a time when Monticellos

Wayne Frey and his three daughters
earned gold medals for their fencing
talents. From 2002 to 2012, Wayne and a
combination of his daughters, Nicole,
Rachel and Claire, were Sunshine State
Games Fencing medal winners and had
a strong presence in the amateur sports
community in Florida as members of
the FSU Fencing Club.
Frey has successfully guided two
daughters through college and into professional careers and the last one is on
her path to success. Now, its only
Wayne climbing onto the medal stand.
At the 2016 Sunshine State Games in
Palm Beach County, the registration
database showed Wayne as the lone
Frey, registered in four events, two in
the Veterans Division. The now 50year old Frey claims its his bullhead-

edness, that keeps him coming back to

Floridas largest fencing tournament
that annually attracts 200 or more fencers from around the state.
Freys daughter Rachel is a recent
graduate of Drexel University with a
law degree. I went to visit Rachel up
north for Christmas and convinced her
to compete in a tournament with me,
he said. Its a bit more intense in the
northeast than it is in the south.
When not running his horseshoe
business, Wayne Frey Farrier Service, where he puts several hundred
shoes a month on horses in the rural
Monticello area, Frey continues to be
active in the sport with some geezers
here in Monticello still playing around
with fencing. There (are) still some
teenagers left in the sport to outsmart,
he says. Im not as quick as I once
was. Frey looks to come up with new
ways to outsmart and beat younger
fencers as well as his peers.

Expand your intellect and perfect your card skills

PAMELA FLORY

If you are looking for a fresh and mentally invigorating activity and an opportunity to make new acquaintances, you
might consider bridge. Bridge is a card
game that can be enjoyed socially or
played competitively.
Not to worry if duplicate bridge is an
entirely new venture for you, Tallahassee
Duplicate Bridge Club (TDBC) and its
companion Capital City Duplicate Bridge
(CCDBC) have classes at all levels to educate you in standard approaches to the
game.
Duplicate Bridge offers many challenges in spending a few hours with folks
of like interest. A session lasts about
three hours. Benefits include expanding
intellect, perfecting strategies, improving card-playing skills, overcoming the
opponents skills, and having fun in a

friendly atmosphere. As your interest

grows, there are mentors to guide you
through twists and turns.
Tallahassee has supported duplicate
bridge for over 50 years and roughly 250
members participate in games weekly.
Both clubs abide by the zero-tolerance
guidelines that penalize rudeness and
guarantee an atmosphere of friendly
competition. We are all bridge buddies
and support each other in our desire to
become better players.
Games are held regularly throughout
the week at the Tallahassee Senior Center
on N. Monroe St. and at the Oaks South
Building on the Westminster Oaks campus just off Dempsey-Mayo Rd. For specific information, please contact Steve
Ross, TDBC Club Manager, at 891-5766593 or Steve Whitaker, owner CCDBC,
at 850-222-5797. You can also find more
information online at www.tdbc.info/.

From left, Judy Etemadi, Dr. Julie Pestella, Leslie Mendleson and Beatrice Carter enjoy the
camaraderie and competition as they play Duplicate Bridge at the Tallahassee Senior Center.

Seniors need fans, help with utilities in summer

KRISTEN BLACK
ELDER CARE SERVICES

July temperatures are continuing to

rise in the sunny state of Florida. For
some, the onset of hot weather means its
time to turn up the air conditioning in
their homes. However, for many struggling seniors, thats not an option. Currently, Elder Care Services is averaging

10 requests a day from home-bound seniors needing assistance with paying their
utility bills or looking for ways to help
them stay cool this summer.
One of the challenges with the summer
season is that as temperatures rise, so do
electricity bills for seniors. Seniors who
are trying to stay cool and save on utility
costs often request fans. Elder Care Services relies on individual and community

donations to help meet these needs. Currently we only have few fans in stock, and
requests are expected to increase over
the next two months as Floridas hottest
weather approaches. The donations we
receive will allow us to continue to assist
those in need.
Donations can be made by calling ECS
at 850-921-5554, visiting our web site at
www.ecsbigbend.org or by mailing dona-

tions to ECS, 2518 West Tennessee Street,

Tallahassee, FL 32304.
Elder Care Services, Inc. is a private
non-profit corporation, dedicated to improving the quality of life for seniors in
Leon and the surrounding counties, allowing them to remain at home with dignity.

SENIOR END-OF-LIFE RESOURCES

Facts*
Life expectancy in the United States: age 78.94
years for those born in 2014.
In 2013, nearly 2.6 million people died in the
United States, 73 percent age 65 and over.
51 percent of Americans age 55 to 64 dont
have wills.
A majority of Americans 90 percentthink its
important to discuss their loved ones wishes
for end-of-life care and death but only 30
percent of Americans actually have the conversation.
In 2012, the U.S. cremation rate was 43.5 percent (versus burials).
There are resources available in this community to help seniors and their families plan for
end-of-life matters. Planning is very important
because many of the forms needed to designate others as representatives, such as power
of attorney documents, must be completed
before a senior becomes incapacitated.
