Working with and Leading People

Individual Assignment

Introduction
An organizations success depends very much on the people working in it, and recruiting the rights people is a
key factor. Organizations with effective recruitment and selection processes and practices in place are more
likely to make successful staffing appointments. It is also important that the processes and procedures involved
in recruitment and selection to meet the organizations human resources needs are legal. This report outlines
knowledge and understanding of the impact of the regulatory framework on the recruitment process.
Throughout the history, it has been recognized that the success of an organization or any group within the
organization depends largely on the quality of its leadership. Successful leaders envision the future, anticipate
change, exploit opportunities, motivate their followers to higher level of productivity, correct poor performance,
and lead the organization towards objectives. Though it is a fact that leadership tremendously influences the
human behavior its inner working and specific dimensions cannot be precisely spelt out. However, almost all
the established theories of the leadership continue to provide an understanding about process of leading as a
foundation for the practice of effective leadership in todays organizations.
There are many benefits of working in teams for both the individual and the organization. Most importantly the
task is carried out better and more efficiently. An understanding of the team development and the leadership

function is crucial when working with others. A motivated workforce is more likely to be efficient and can
contribute to the long-term profitability for the business. This report also discusses how an effective team leader
can motivate and develop individuals within teams. Sometimes when people work in teams they have their
own types of communication, which can have an impact on other team members and can cause conflict or
tension. Writing this report provided an opportunity to explore the different characteristics of leadership as well
as building on the skills and knowledge needed to manage and lead people and teams in an organization.

Impact of legal, regulatory and ethical considerations to the recruitment and selection process (LO 1.2)
Equal Pay Act (NI) 1970
The fray for equal pay lies at the heart of exploring women's movement for fair and equal rights in the
workplace. Requires employers to pay men and women equal pay for equal work. It prohibits sex
discrimination between workers in respect of their contractual pay and terms and conditions of employment.
This has the effect of modifying all terms of a contract so as not to be less favorable than that of a person of the
opposite sex. If terms are found to be less favorable, the employee may be able to bring a claim under the Act.
Sex Discrimination Act 1975

People of both sexes have the right to equal opportunities in education and employment, and to be paid the
same amount for doing the same work. People who break this law, for example by paying women less than
men, can be put on trial and punished in a court of law.
It is unlawful to discriminate in employment including recruitment, training and promotion on the grounds of a
person's sex, race, color or nationality. According to the sex discrimination act of 1975 we want to treat the
male and female in equal way in recruitment and selection process.
The Disability Discrimination 1995
The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 described a disabled person as someone with "a physical or mental
impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his ability to carry out normal day-to-day
activities", which has or can be expected to last for more than 12 months. (politics.co.uk, 2015)
This Act to make it unlawful to discriminate against disabled persons in connection with employment, the
provision of goods, facilities and services or the disposal or management of premises; to make provision about
the employment of disabled persons; and to establish a National Disability Council.
The Race Relation Act 1976
The Race Relations Act does not allow positive discrimination or affirmative action - in other words, an
employer cannot try to change the balance of the workforce by selecting someone mainly because she or he is
from a particular racial group. This would be discrimination on racial grounds, and unlawful.

Evaluate own contribution to the selection process 1.4
In the role play that was performed in selecting the marketing assistant for Tele-seen, there were three
employers, I was one of the Chief executive officer who was in the selection process of the pertaining roleplay

Explain the factors involved in planning the monitoring and assessment of work performance LO 4.1
Performance management
This is the process by which manager and workers work jointly to plan, monitor and appraisal an employees
work objectives and in general contribution to the organization. More than just a yearly performance review,
performance management is the incessant process of setting objectives, assessing development and as long as
on-going coaching and feedback to make sure that workers are meeting their objectives and career goals.
Benchmarking
A benchmark is a tip of orientation by which something can be calculated. In surveying, a "bench mark" (two
words) is a position or other enduring mark recognized at a known elevation that is second-hand as the
foundation for measuring the elevation of additional topographical points.
Benchmarking is a look for how, as well as how much. To duplicate results in your organization you require
appreciating how they have been achieved by others, and Benchmarking need not require you to call others.
You could attain the results in a lot of ways, depending on the time and capital obtainable to you. The next
diagram outlines more than a few alternatives for conducting exchanges. As additional time and capitals are
obtainable and as the want increases, you can choose by ballot to use the more complicated and timeconsuming processes.

Working with and Leading People

Individual Assignment

There are three types of benchmarking.

1. Internal benchmarking
2. Competitive benchmarking
3. Process or activity benchmarks
Internal benchmarking
Internal benchmarking is the process by which a company or corporation looks within the realm of its own
business to try and determine the best methods for conducting business.
Competitive benchmarking
Incessant process of contrasting a firm's practices and presentation actions with that of its most successful
competitor
Process or activity benchmarks
Process or activity benchmarking is Makes comparisons with organizations in different, non-competing
product/service sectors but with similar core operations.
Feedback is giving specific information about a person's current behavior in order to help him/her either
continue the behavior or modify the behavior.
Providing feedback
It is Provides a basis for maintaining or improving performance and Provides a forum for assessing need and
planning additional experiences for employees.

Working with and Leading People

Individual Assignment

There are lots of Characteristics of Effective Feedback those are Feedback is exact and performance based,
evocative, not classification, mainly focuses on the behavior, its not the learner, and it is based on observations
etc.
Diversity issues
At the outset of any diversity plan, a business wants to make a decision for itself how it will define diversity.
There is some diversity issues are below.
Respect in the Workplace
Key part in getting a positively expanded place of work is establishing teamwork and mutual respect in the
middle of employee members. Receipt of person differences is necessary in creating a copacetic and creative
work environment. Acceptance leads to respect, and ultimately opportunity.
Lifestyle Acceptance
Although one's individual life be supposed to characteristically not have an effect on their job performance,
way of life acceptance is from time to time an issue in the workplace. Unluckily, even though many employers
now give comprehensive advantages to "alternative lifestyle partners," sometimes gay and lesbian employees
experience disregard and discrimination from co-worker. Such performance leads to an uncomfortable working
atmosphere and unfortunate productivity.
Plan and deliver the assessment of the development needs of individual 4.2
Needs assessments enable us to ground justification for development of a training program within the real
world needs of our associates or employee Imagine the reaction of business, organizational, or institutional
stakeholders if an unnecessary and potentially expensive training program was developed that did not fulfill the
needs of staff. Needs assessments save money, time, and increase the potential for value in the outcomes
training efforts.
SWOT on my self-regarding the job advertisement
Strength- My strength are hard-working, to remain calm in pressure situation as well, self-confidence to do
well any given task. Very good listener, can easily relate to someone, not quick to judge, don't care what people
think of me, I believe in myself when no one else does. I am an optimistic and an extrovert person. I am also
adapted to changing situations.
Weakness- My weakness is to get angry very quickly on wrong things. Lazy, anger problem, too kind to
people, don't like asking for stuff, don't like meeting new people sometimes they are annoying. Not being able
to always ask for help. If I am assigned a specific task to do, I feel like its my duty to get it done since I was

chosen to do it. I feel bad because I don't want to look incapable of doing my job. But I have come to realize
that is where teamwork comes into play. Everyone has had a time when they needed help or guidance on
something.
Opportunity- There are chances to improve my knowledge and skills. Will be able to meet new people in
business environment.
Threats- High competition in the working place. Lack of communication ability will result in low performance.

Self-assessment
According to Boud (1995), all assessment including self-assessment comprises two main elements: making
decisions about the standards of performance expected and then making judgments about the quality of the
performance in relation to these standards. When self-assessment is introduced, it should ideally involve
students in both of these aspects.
Reference: PDF [online] DATE 12/3/15
Self-evaluation constructs on a usual propensity to check out the development of ones own knowledge.
Additional knowledge is only possible after the acknowledgment of what wants to be learned. If a student can
recognize his/her learning progress, this may inspire additional learning. And Self-evaluation encourages
reflection on ones own knowledge.
360 degree feedback
Performance appraisal data collected from all approximately a worker their peers, subordinates, supervisors,
and sometimes, from internal and external customers.
Reference: business dictionary [online] DATE: 12/4/15
360 degree feedback has many advantages. Those are Increases Self-awareness, reviews are helpful to the
worker as they give a well-rounded and balanced view of their skills and behaviors, 360 reviews are the key to
identifying employee strengths, and its develop employees skills.
180 degree feedback
360 degree assessments are able to create a big dissimilarity in worker growth, but what if your association is
not prepared for 360 feedbacks? Think using 180-degree format: self + supervisor.
6 Key Reasons to consider 180 degree feedback instead of 360 are Reality check, Clarifies expectations, out in
the open, simpler report, less annoying for raters, and Quick and more affordable.
Behavioral checklist
Behavior checklist for the classroom, a lecturer must not only think thought problems which have an effect on
education and attention but also community problems which relate to aggressive and destructive behavior.

The Advantages of the Checklist Employee Evaluation Method

Prevents Absolute Ratings

Working with and Leading People

Individual Assignment

Everybody has strengths and weaknesses, but skills typically drop on a range. You typically can't explain
someone as all or nothing in conditions of his abilities. Misunderstandings effect when managers,
deliberately or not, make extreme-sounding appraisals of an workers skills in written comments.

Avoids Discrimination

Because everybody gets evaluated according to the same level and criteria, using checklists in worker
evaluations helps managers keep away from discrimination. With written evaluations, managers have more
freedom to exaggerate and overlook strengths and weaknesses. Checklist formats power reviewers to assess
workers on a skill-by-skill foundation and to believe seriously concerning areas of worker performance that
otherwise might have been left unconsidered.

Ensures Clarity

For performance reviews to be effectual, workers have to appreciate the criterion used for assessment before
the appraisal meeting. When workers are on the similar page as their managers, public be able to focus their
work efforts to demonstrate skills and traits that the boss values. Checklists smash behaviors into skillrelated categories.

Write Comments First

Though checklists have their reimbursement, a written commentary section is also significant. Since checklists
are comparatively rapid to fill out, a boss might carelessly choose make sure boxes without bearing in mind
specific examples that give good reason for each rating. Include a written comments part, and write universal
impressions about a worker first before completion the check boxes. As you move from side to side the
criterion, think about how your written commentary line up with the small package that you're examination.

Benefits of team working for an organization 3.1

Every Organizations group their members into teams to achieve certain tasks. The reason is because
organizations team their Members is due to the many benefits organizations receive through team working.
Each and every employee has different skills, abilities, knowledge and ideas. Whenever they are teamed, all
their different aspects can be combined together and used to derive more effective and creative ideas and
solutions leading to good results.
While Members are leaded properly within the teams with concerns to what is expected by them, they will be
motivated to perform well and stay focused forever. The motivation Members obtain through team working will
also lead to the job satisfaction of the Members. The tasks can be shared among the members in the teams based
Page 22 of 27

on their knowledge and skills; because different employee has different skills and ideas for their tasks. Hence
decreasing the time consumption and growing the quality of the work done. So it will effect to an organization.
Furthermore an employee is given different tasks within the team based on their skills and knowledge, the
resources inside the organization will be utilized appropriately with least wastage. The members in the team
may gain knowledge from their fellow team members with regards to the areas which they are not specialize in.
Thus, increasing the knowledge of the team members. Furthermore, communicating as teams is more effective
than communicating as an organization as a whole.

Responsibilities of a team leader and a team member towards the goals 3.2
A team leader is someone who provides direction, instructions and guidance to the groups of individuals, who
can also be known as a team for the purpose of achieving a certain objective. An effective leader should know
his members strengths, weakness very well.
Team leaders serve different kinds of roles. Their job is to get objectives and goals done using all the resources
available. Below are some of the responsibilities of a team leader.

Establish shared ownership for the results.

Develop team members to fullest potential.

Make the work interesting and engaging

Develop a self-managing team.

Motivate and inspire team members.

Lead and facilitate constructive communication.

Monitor, but don't micromanage.

Working with and Leading People

Individual Assignment

A team can accomplish their objectives easily when there is proper organization within its members. As an
individual in a team if one knows what are his duties and responsibilities then the overall achievement will be
high and the work process also will run smooth. The basic concept is to understand the strength and weakness
of each other member.
Team members dont have specific responsibilities, but their participation is critical to the teams success. Team
members must agree to:

Be enthusiastic and committed to the teams purpose.

Be honest and keep any confidential information behind closed doors.

Share responsibility to rotate through other team roles like facilitator, recorder, and timekeeper.

Share knowledge and expertise and not withhold information

Conflicts
When there is a conflict between the team members concerning whose thoughts must be selected by the team
leader which can lead to the inefficiency in the teamwork. If such kinds of conflicts arise then the leader should
take into mind the ideas of all the members and should give his concluding decision by with caution looking
into the topics and thereby resolve the conflict among the team members.
When we were doing presentation we had conflict on slides dividing to each member. The slides were not
divided among the members equally therefore it was a big issue. The leader came up with an idea suggesting
that each member has to cover a learning outcome

Review the effectiveness of the team in achieving the goals 3.3

Through the feedbacks from the presentation for myself and the team, I got an overall positive comments, that I
was very well practiced and presented well, however I also was given a negative feedback that I should not clap
in between the changing of slides as it looks un-proficient and disrupt the flow of the presentation. I
individually got an overall distinction for my presentation.

Working with and Leading People

Individual Assignment

The rest of the team members were also given good comments from lecturer, with better grading in the
presentation, however there were some feedbacks given for our improvement, but overall our team got
distinction for the presentation.

Conclusion
In this module Working with leading people we come to a conclusion that the duties of a Human Resource
manager is very important for an organization as it is one of the most important function in the organization. We
also get to a conclusion that leadership is important for an organization and for a team work to influence the
members and the employees. The HR manager should have ideas about the legislation which is related to the
recruitment and selection process.
Another important functions of the HR manager is to monitor the employees work performance and assess the
performance, the manager also must give effective feedbacks to the employee which he can develop in the next
time.
The entire task found in the organization is done via teamwork because working in teams in more beneficial
