POSITION SUMMARY
Police Officers are responsible for performing assigned protection, prevention, enforcement, call response,
pursuit, investigation, arrest, reporting, testifying in court and related community policing responsibilities in
preserving the peace and promoting the safety of citizens throughout the City of St. Anthony.
Work involves some element of personal danger and the authority to use deadly force as necessary.
ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
1, Reads, learns and applies the laws, ordinances, policies, rules and other materials required to perform
all assigned accountabilities of the position.
2. Displays the ability to maintain order through the enforcement of State laws, City ordinances, and
protecting life and property.
3. Assists in the investigating and/or preventing of criminal offenses, accidents and other problem areas,
4, Apprehends and controls offenders.
5. Responds to medical emergencies and applies appropriate first aid and/or CPR.
6. Prepares police reports that include facts, analysis, and recommendations for action.
7. Testifies in a court of law when summoned.
8. Displays a consistent compliance with general orders and any other policies, protocols and
procedures that are to be followed in performing assigned duties.
9. Displays sound, consistent judgment and problem-solving skills that are exercised when dealing with
widely differing and diverse circumstances, conditions and individuals or groups.

involved in developing cases.

4. Have knowledge of, and ability to work with law enforcement related computer and electronic
equipment.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATONS
Associate's degree in law enforcement or related field.
Must be P.O.S.T. licensed
Must possess a valid and unrestricted Driver's License
‘Must successfully pass a background investigation and complete a one year probationary period.
Must hold a First Responder certificate.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Police Officers work in a 24 hour, seven day a week operation with a rotating shift schedule. ‘This includes
working day, swing, and graveyard shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime as required. This position works
ina variety of weather conditions.
Police Officers are required to perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters, to include
directing traffic for long periods of time; administering emergency medical aid; lifiing, dragging, and
carrying people away from dangerous situations; and securing and evacuating people from particular arcas.
A Police Officer must also be able to load, unload, aim and fire from a variety of body positions with
handguns, shotguns, and other agency issued firearms under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly
force at levels of proficiency prescribed iu certification standards set forth by the department and the State of
Minnesota. This position may be required on occasions to lift 100 Ibs. or more. The ability to work overtime,
shift changes, or be on-call as necessary or assigned is a requirement for this position.
This position also conducts searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and large outdoor areas which may
involve feeling and detecting objects, walking for long periods of time, detaining people, and stopping
suspicious vehicles and persons.
Motor vehicle space is limited due to required equipment such as: radios, firearms, radar, and emergency
medical gear. Distracting noise levels are often present due to radio communications. Required clothing
consists of @ uniform, bullet proof vest, firearm with ammunition, and mobile two-way communication
equipment.
Since law enforcement officers are required to enforce the law and they are exposed to certain temptations to
show favoritism, corruption, or unlawful monetary gain, it is a “business necessity” that officers exhibit a
history and characteristic of honesty, reliability, and ability to manage personal finances, interpersonal skill,
and integrity.‘Work in this environment may consist of blood or other potentially infectious materials, and hazardous
materials that can lead to serious injury or death. Also, these responsibilities may involve supervision of
police activities in detention, crime prevention and criminal investigation, and are responsible for assuming
command in critical situations.
This position is subject to a pre-employment physical and psychological exam. All candidates must
successfully pass a physical and psychological exam administered by a licensed physician and psychologist
before a formal offer of employment will be made by the City of St. Anthony.
