Watermelons
Watermelons are a
delicious fruit. They are
called watermelons
because there are mostly
water. In fact, they are 92%
water!
They are usually round and
green on the outside. When
you cut open a watermelon, it is red or yellow inside.
Inside, there are sometimes black seeds, and sometimes
the watermelons are seedless.
Watermelons are grown all over the world. The largest
producer of this fruit is China. More watermelons are
grown in China than anywhere else in the world. Many
people like to eat watermelon, especially on a hot summer
day!
coffee.
Coffee is the third most popular drink in the world. Only
tea and water are more popular than coffee. Coffee beans
are actually the seeds of coffee cherries that grow on
coffee plants. The beans are green when they are picked.
Most of the coffee that is sold in coffee shops and grocery
stores is brown. It becomes brown because the beans
have been roasted at high temperatures. The roasting
gives the beans their different flavors. Some coffees are
darker and stronger-tasting than other coffees. You can
buy green coffee beans from some stores if you want to
roast your own beans.
In North America, a latte is coffee that has steaming milk
added to it. A cafe mocha is coffee with steaming milk and
some chocolate added to it. Sometimes whipped cream
is put on the top of a cafe mocha. Coffees with different
flavors added to them are very popular.

LESSON 2 Grammar
Warm Up

productive? Why?
A
C
2.- Read the text. Which of these activities are technological
fads?
Reading a book
Chatting on the computer
Have a chat with a friend
Watching television
3. Do you think technology is good or bad for teenagers and
young adults?
LIFESTYLE (MODERNITY Vs WELLBEING MOVEMENT)
Modern life is bringing happiness and new expectations for
some families nowadays. But others are suffering the consequences that the new lifestyle has imposed on peoples habits.
Technology and the communication revolution now is
becoming the main aspect on teenagers and young adults
concerns. They are more aware and able to manage the
gadgets that those artifacts bring to daily activities. At home,
after school, the children get distracted by the television or by
the computers or mobiles through the shows and gadgets that
diverts their attention from more productive or healthy activities. Family relations are broken and the communication and
understanding between family members is lost.
Teenagers and young adults spend more time in front of the
computer forfeiting downtime to less social and family
relationships.
People are thinking that all these technology is helping to
create a better life. However, Sociologists and critical thinkers
believe that the technological fad is bringing some issues
from the households to the workplaces.
Children and young people dont dress according to their
native culture anymore. They dont even eat or drink traditional dishes. Today, a boy or a girl is not playing the old
games that once their relatives used to play. All of these have
brought the acculturation of society. The need and wishes of
modern youth are very different from those of their parents.
When asked the teenagers what are they doing during their
free time, they say: I am watching television right now or Im
playing computer games. They dont say: Im reading a book
right now. They dislike reading because watching television
or playing online role playing games is easier and they do
not have to use their own imagination. Teenagers prefer to
spend free time in front of a computer rather than to walk, play
football, go to a swimming pool, or just simply meet a friend in
the park and have a chat.
