AreIllegalImmigrantsCreatingGrowthorComplication?
ShouldillegalimmigrantsbegrantedamnestyintheUnitedStates?Thishasbecomeone
ofthemostcontroversialissuesthiscountryiscurrentlyhavingtoface.Alongwithtryingtofind
asolution,therehavebeenseveralviewpointswhichtakeintoperspectivedifferentvariablesand
factorstowhyillegalimmigrantsshouldorshouldnotbeallowedamnesty.Allowingamnesty
wouldmeanthatillegalimmigrantswouldbeforgivenbythegovernmentduetotheiractof
enteringthecountryillegallyorbreakingtheimmigrationlaws,ultimatelyallowingthemtostay
inthecountry.Afteranalyzingtwodifferentarticlesrelatingtothesametopic,butwithdifferent
viewpoints,itcaneasilybeconcludedthatthereisalackofcriticalthinkingovertheissue.
Thefirstarticle,GrantingIllegalImmigrantsaPathtoCitizenshipWouldBoostUSand
StateEconomics,writtenbyRobertLynchandPatrickOakfordfromGreenhavenPressin
2014,supportedtheirargumentforbeingproamnestybyclaimingthatallowingillegal
immigrantstoremainlivingintheUnitedStateswouldpromotebettergrowthoftheeconomyby
raisingincomesandcreatedmorejobopportunities.Ontheotherhand,thearticle,Unskilled
IllegalImmigrantsHurttheU.S.Economy,writtenbyStevenMalangafromGreenhavenPress
in2008,claimedthattheUnitedStateseconomyisnotingoodenoughshapetolegallyaccept
uneducatedillegalimmigrantsinthecountryandsupportedhisargumentbycomparing
immigrantsoftodaywiththosefromthefirstgreatmigration.LynchandOakfordsarticlewas

directedtopersuadeofficialsorthepublictoagreewiththeproposaloftheBorderSecurity,
EconomicOpportunity,andImmigrationModernizationActof2013.Theactwasproposedfor
thepurposeofprovidingawayforillegalimmigrantstoearnlegalizationandcitizenship(Lynch
andOakford).Malangasarticlewasdirectedtowardanykindofpublicinterestedinthestability
ofillegalimmigrantsandtheeconomyoftheUnitedStates.Thesetwoarticlesinwhichwere
analyzed,claimwhetherornottheUnitedStatesofAmericashouldallowamnestytoillegal
immigrantsregardingtheissueofthepopulationofthesepeoplethatcurrentlyliveinthe
country.
MalangawasabletocreateamoreagreeableargumentthanLynchthroughouthisarticle.
Malangasarticle,UnskilledIllegalImmigrantsHurttheU.S.Economy,touchedalmostallof
theaspectsagreatarticlemakesinthesenseofwhatkindofaudiencecouldbereadingit.
Malangadidsomethingquitedifferentfromhowothershavesupportedtheiropinionsonthis
issue,whichwasincludingpasthistory.Thearticlewasbasedaroundhowillegalimmigrantsare
keepingtheUnitedStatesfromgrowingeconomicallyandindustriallywhileroundinghisclaim
bycomparingthekindofimmigrantswhoareenteringtheUnitedStatestoday,withthe
EuropeanswhofirstenteredwhatsoonbecametheUnitedStatesduringthefirstgreatmigration
(Malanga).Inhisobservation,heviewsimmigrantsoftodayaslessintelligentandinnovativeas
theimmigrantswhofirstlandedherefromEurope,thereforelessvaluabletothecountry
(Malanga).Theauthorwasabletohookdifferentreaderssuchas,thosewhocareabout
economicstability,thosewhoopposeorcareforillegalimmigrants,andthosewhocareabout
theinnovationsthiscountryhastheabilitytoobtain.Hisbestfactorwasusingpathosthroughout
thearticlebytouchingtherightsthatillegalimmigrantsdeserve.AlthoughMalangatouchedon

severalcounterarguments,hisarticlelackedonbeingmorehumanetowardstheabilitiesof
immigrants.Hecenteredalotofhisopiniononimmigrantssupposedlackofknowledgeand
theirlackofrightstoreceivebetterjobs.Hewouldhavebeenabletojustifyhisclaimmore
preciselybyincorporatingtheopinionofimmigrantsovertheissueofemployment.
LynchandOakfordsarticlewasnotassupportiveinclaimingtheirargumentbecause
theydidnotincorporateasmanyaspectsforawideaudience.IntheGrantingIllegal
ImmigrantsaPathtoCitizenshipWouldBoostUSandStateEconomicsarticle,Lynchand
Oakfordspokeovertheeconomicalbenefitsofallowingillegalimmigrantstostaybyexplaining
howallowingmorecitizenshipwouldmeanmoreresidentsandcitizenspayingtaxes,and
ultimatelycreatingahigherbudgetforwhichindividualstatesorthecountrycouldusefor
sustainability.Thearticlesclaimwasmostinfluencedwithlogos,butlackedinpathos,which
wasafactorthatMalangadidincorporateinhisclaim.Itwasnotabletoreachadiverse
audiencebecausethetextwasbasedoffonlystatisticsandthecountry'seconomicalgain.
Althoughtheydidincorporatethebenefitsofimmigrants,theylacktocreateapathosappealin
whichtheaudiencecouldsympathizeoremotionallysupporttheissuesthatillegalimmigrants
face.Therewasalsoasenseofinhumanitybeingbroughttothearticlebythemannerthatthey
spokeofimmigrantsmakingthemsoundmorelikeobjectswhocreatemoremoneyratherthan
actualhumanbeings.LynchandOakfordlackedthemostinstatingaspecificcounterargument
inwhichtheycouldcounterattack.Theystatedmanyanswersbyincludingfactorsthatmaybe
affectedbythisissuewithoutactuallystatingthosearguments.
Overall,Malangawasabletocreateabetterargumentforanopenaudiencetoview.
UnlikeLynchandOakfordsarticle,Malangaincorporatedmanyfactorsthatcouldpotentially

mattertoadiverseaudienceaswellasusepathosalongwithhislogos.Thebesttacticusedin
thearticlewasusingpasthistorytocomparetheeffectsofthepastversustheeffectsoftoday.
LynchandOakfordsarticlegivesofftheimpressionthatwehaveamaterialisticculturein
America,whileMalangasarticlebringstheaudiencetothinkthatpeopleoutsideoftheUnited
Statesarelesscapable,thereforelessvaluable.Despiteallofthefactorsthattheseauthorsused
tosupporttheirviewpointonthistopic,bothlackedincounterarguingeachother.Itiswhythese
authorscouldnotfullydeveloptheirinformationwellenoughtocounterattackeachotherthat
thesearticlesshowalackofcriticalthinkingoverthematter.
