Principals Message - Caralee Supporting the Willagee Community
Welcome to Caralee Cares for 2013. It has been another great year for Caralee Community School.
Our year 7s have again done us proud by being accepted into competitive high quality programs at a
number of secondary schools including Perth Modern School. Caralee continues to work hard to
support the Willagee Community and I am pleased to announce two fantastic community events we are
hosting. First is the Caralee Family Film Night on the Caralee oval on Saturday 23rd of November.
The fun starts at 5.00pm leading up to the movie at sunset which will be Madagascar 3. The second event
we are hosting is the 2013 Willagee Community Christmas Lights Competition. In conjunction
with Siobhan Micale of One Residential, we hope to share the Christmas spirit with the residents of
Willagee by announcing the winners of the competition at our Caralee Christmas Musical from 6.00pm
on Wednesday 11th of December. Dont forget to register and vote. Trevor Anderson,

Academic Excellence - Class of 2013

Caralee students make the grade.

Its that time of year again when we bid a fond
farewell to the Caralee Class of 2013. This year,
we are extremely proud to announce that a number
of Year 6 & 7 students have achieved success by
being accepted into specialist programmes at a range
of selective schools across the metropolitan area.
Just some of our high fliers are...

Not to be outdone, Benjamin Cruse follows in his

two older brothers footsteps by being accepted into
John Curtin College of the Arts for Dance. With
Bens younger brother Sebastian performing in the
musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and oldest brother
Nicholas being accepted into WAAPA to do an Arts
degree in dance in 2014, the four Cruse boys
certainly know how to perform at their best.

Talented Year 6 students, Eden Ryan and Hannah

Lopes are to be congratulated on being accepted
into Year 7 at Iona Presentation College where we
are sure they will make a big impression in the
years to come.

Melville Senior High School (MSHS) will be

delighted to welcome a fantastic netballer Nene
Naganuma to their Specialist Netball Program. We
also draw attention to Heather Raeburn, Navya

double act by gaining entry into the music and the
gifted and talented (GATE) programmes
respectively.

Shyoki was also offered

and has accepted a place
in WAs premier school
for gifted students, Perth
Modern School. This
makes three students in
three years from Caralee
to make the grade at
Perth Modern School.

Speaking of gifted and talented, Caralee students

Kobi Simpson and Charmaine Bishop were also
accepted into GATE as well as the Music

ICT in the early years @ the Caralee Kindy.

Many of the early concepts in both literacy and numeracy
require constant repetition to master. Programmes on the
interactive computer screen and the iPads are a fun way to
learn.

The kindy program provides opportunities for the children to

explore mathematical ideas. Children are given many hands

Mathematical Manoeuvres

Early Years Team makes an early start towards Australian Curriculum

Question - Whats fun, hands on and developmentally
appropriate for your child?
Answer - Its the Early Years Mathematics programme
at Caralee Community School!
The Early Years Team
has sourced many
developmental learning
activities that promote
the language of
Mathematics as well as
laying a solid foundation
upon which the future
years of your childs
education can be built.

The school has also developed an extensive range of

Mathematics manipulative materials which children can
manipulate to develop counting and sequencing skills.
Caralee Mathematics co-ordinator and Early Years Teacher
Julie Cummings believes, Children in the Early Years
programme at Caralee Community School are well positioned
to meet the
Mathematical outcomes of the Australian Curriculum.

With the introduction

of the Australian Curriculum Mathematics programme of
study, the Early Years Team have been working hard to align
our already successful Early Years Framework material with
the new and dynamic national requirements.
We have also invested in software programs specifically
purchased for use on the Interactive Whiteboard, iPads and
notebooks. Some programs children can use at home, as well
as school, with a normal internet connection.

Literacy is Key @ Caralee

Parents and teachers work together to promote literacy.

The literacy programme in Kindergarten and Pre-primary at
Caralee Community School is based on the latest research
about how children learn and is guided by the Australian
Curriculum and the Early Years Learning Framework for
Australia.
Literacy learning begins at birth. Pre-primary teacher Terri
Hale knows lots of strategies parents can do with children

from birth to promote literacy. Terri says, Some things

parents can do include reading favourite stories over and
over, following the words with your finger, pointing to
pictures and talking about the story. You can encourage your
child to pretend to read and you should also show your child
how to care for books.
At Caralee we value this continuing literacy partnership
between the family home and teachers and school. We
provide literacy experiences that build on what children
already know and develop strong skills for the future.
Our Early Years Team believes that literacy learning should be
fun, motivating and interesting for the children. We aim to
provide for the
learning style and
ability of individual
children by using a
wide variety of
resources that
includes Interactive
Whiteboards, iPads
and computers in
the classroom.

Visual Arts Specialist Programme

Performing Arts Specialist Programme

Students were given the opportunity to

participate in numerous Art competitions for
which we had some fantastic results.

Students from years one to seven participated in

the Drumbeat programme at Caralee this year.
Mrs Skye Marshall, Caralees Music Specialist, is
a trained Senior Drumbeat Facilitator. This
programme places a strong focus on social
development and building resilience in younger
people for later life. Initially developed to build
resilience in indigenous teenagers from the
Wheatbelt, the programme is now being
implemented in schools and adult groups
around Australia and America.

Congratulations goes to Nene Naganuma and

Djembe drums were purchased through a joint

contribution by our P&C, music budget and also
through the Woolworths Earn & Learn
programme. Drumbeat was a huge success this
year with students giving the following feedback:
Dylan Crowe for becoming finalists in the
Therapy focus competition Jake Rides a
Rollercoaster. Congratulations also go to Cory
Campbell and Ruby Quartermaine for becoming
finalists in SKA Seeing Stars Competition. Both
students art pieces were flown to Melbourne
and displayed to the public for voting at
Melbourne Federation Squares art gallery. Kai
Hawkins, Kylee Pearson, Cody Bishop and
Summer Fox were our winners for the
NAIDOC art competition held at Kmart
Kardinya.

I found I could express my feelings with the

class on the drum. Nobody laughed at each
other. We all worked as a team to make
amazing music.
I discovered how to overcome things in your
life to make you a better person. Thanks Mrs
Marshall!

In Drumbeat, I
learnt you can always
tell your feelings to

Art Specialist Aleisha Cotton believes being
involved with the community has been a hit with and you dont need
to be afraid to tell
the kids. As well as the competitions, I also

Fever Cup netball makes it three years in a row.

Caralee has made history by winning the
Fever Cup three years in a row. Our highly
skilled netballers were put into two teams.
Both teams played extremely well and our A
team were the undefeated champions.
Teacher coach Belinda Griffin remarked, Both
our attack and defensive sides were
unstoppable!
Caralee won against Bullcreek, Parkwood and
Brentwood by more than 30 goals. Well
done to all girls who played together well as a
team supporting and encouraging each other
to keep the cup at Caralee. Our weekend
team continues to go from strength to strength coached by teacher Aleisha Cotton. I couldnt
have been more proud of their efforts, Aleisha said. Caralee has the only netball club in Willagee.
