Course and Instructor:

Communications 130 (Visual Media) with Ben Pingel

Programs/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
-Learn basic photography skills.
-Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the
layout
-Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it
-Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing)
-Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.5 x 11 page layout
-Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop
-Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides

Process:
To start the process, I went out and took multiple picture around the BYU-Idaho campus. I then
chose the picture that I wanted to create my photodesign around. Because of the green apples, I
chose a green monochromatic color scheme to unify the picture to the design. I wanted to keep it
simple without there being too many colors or elements.

Event Ad

An ad for a Youth Carnvial where proceeds are donated to the UVA Childrens Hospital

Course and Instructor:

Communications 130 (Visual Media) with Ben Pingel

Programs/Tools:
Microsoft Word

Objectives:
-Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together).
-Find scan and import high-quality image.
-Create full-bleed design
-Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience
-Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop

Process:
For this project, I used Microsoft Word to create the ad. I scanned the image of the ferris wheel
into my computer and then created my ad around it. I chose a primary color scheme of red, blue
and yellow because it reminded me of colors you would see at a carnival as well as of children. I
created a circle to bring in unity with the ferris wheel. The fonts I chose are fun fonts that reminded
me of children. I wanted to create something that would catch the eyes of all ages not just children
or adults, but both.

Brochure for a made up travel agency located in Paris, France

Course and Instructor:

Communications 130 (Visual Media) with Ben Pingel

Programs/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:
-Set up and align a two-sided, folded document
-Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure
-Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One
should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape
of the image
-Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.
-Trim for a full fleed and print in duplex (two sided) color

Process:
I first started the brochure by deciding what type of company I wanted to create a brochure for. I
decided on travel agency located in Paris, France. I Googled images that I wanted to use on the
brochure. When looking at the images, it helped me create the logo for the company. I created the
Eiffel Tower in Illustrator. I chose a red and blue color scheme because the colors of the French flag
are red and blue. I created silhouettes of popular tourist sites in Paris on the front of the brochure
and then formatted the rest of the images around the body copy. I chose a parisan font to go with
the theme and then chose a legibible font for the body copy.

Programs/Tools
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives
- Create three completely different, original logos to fit company or personal image that will
appeal to the audience. Do not iminate existing logos or use previous designs
-Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to them
-Use only illustator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc... No photos or live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with
the pen/pencil, but delete the image before submitting)
-Refine one logo with variations for color

Process
For this project, I began by sketching various logos to see what type of logo would best represents
the company. After sketching I created three different logos within Illustrator. When I finished the
logos I asked ten people to judge what logo they liked the best and what they thought was the
best logo for the company. The majority of the ten people chose the logo on the right. After having
it critiqued, I changed some parts of the logo to make it look more professional. To finish I created
a grayscale logo and one on a color background so it could be used on a variety of different
things.

-Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a buisness card and letterhead. Photos are okay
on buisness card and letterhead as additional design elements. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full
bleed optional, but trim only ,125. Buisness card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a
vertical page
-Apply typography rules, keeping small copy
-Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.
-Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece. Use periods,
bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens

Process:
I decided on creating a buisness card for a made up cupcake company called Cupcake
Creations. I chose to create a simple logo of a cupcake in Illustrator, where I used the pen tool to
trace an existing image of a cupcake. I wanted to create a pastel look so I chose a triadic color
scheme of gold, teal and violet. I decided on this color scheme because I wanted it to be fun and
eye catching without it being too bright and bold. InDesign was used to then create the buisness
card and letterhead. I placed an enlarged cucpake on the back of the buisness card to fill up the
space so that the it could help to protray the information of the business.
