BILOXI BASEBALL HISTORY: Pro baseball is not totally new to the Gulf Coast, but it is the first since 1908. The
Gulfport-Biloxi Sand Crabs of the Cotton States League played half a season in Biloxi during the summer of 1908.
Many Major League and som Minor League teams held spring traing in the area. Even the 1920 Milwaukee Brewers
of the American Association (direct descendant of the current Brewers) trained in Gulfport. See below.

Casey Stengel (later of New York Yankees fame). In the spring of 1929,
the Mud Hens returned for a second season of spring training in Biloxi
and still were led by Stengel.
** In 1933, Washington won its last American League pennant while
training in Biloxi that spring. No other Washington D.C. club in either the
American or National League has won another one since that season.

Ray M. Thompson, columnist and historian, who wrote for the (then)
Biloxi-Gulfport Daily-Herald in a column dated April 13, 1961 and titled
KnowYour State/When the Detroit Tigers Trained At Gulfport discusses
the Tiger team training in Gulfport in 1913.
**.The American Association Milwaukee Brewers were founded in 1902,
after the American League Brewers moved to St. Louis and became
the St. Louis Browns. The American Association Milwaukee Brewers
continues in the major league Milwaukee Brewers, which took its name
from the 1902-1952 club.
