Letterhead
Description:

Matching letterhead and business card designed

using a personally created logo.

Date:
6/25/16

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 01
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:
I created the logo in Illustrator by creating two
outside circles first and selected colors that
reminded me of the outside and the inside of an
orange. Then I used the pencil tool and the rotation
tool to create a logo that resembled an orange with
clock hands on it. Then I chose a font that reminded
me of smoothies and aligned it vertically and put it
next to the orange shape to complete the logo.
Then I put the Logo at the top left of an 8.5 x 11 page
and chose a font that felt professional but went well
with the other font and used it for my name and
address information. I put a line horizontally across
the page to divide the header from the contents of the
page and then I put a large version of the orange in
the logo on the page and set it to 16% opacity. This gave
the page a thematic feel that fit my brand.

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:

I moved the Logo onto a business card layout and

applied my address information in an aesthetically
pleasing way. For the back I put the lighter text on a
darker background for a contrasting effect and I felt
like it turned out really well.

Web Page
Description:

A web page to show the method and style behind a

recently created logo.

Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 01
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
TextWrangler
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web

page.
Write content to describe the process of creating your
logo and how it appeals to a target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and
content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic
understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach
as one file.

Process:

I created this web page using Brackets. I have had a

decent amount of experience with both HTML and
CSS, and this project was a fun exercise.
I created my content and resized my image for web
in Illustrator. Then I put it all into a simple web page
and then got to work styling. I put everything on the
page into one div so that I could set the background of
that div to an image and that image would stay with
all the content. I separated the sections of the site
with dividers that are actually just list items styled in
CSS. I adjusted all my font sizes, background colors
and font colors to create a pleasing design.

Flier
Description:

This is a flier encouraging people to attend a

leadership conference for graduating seniors.

Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 01
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate

typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic
flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign
document to keep links intact.

Process:

I started the process by sketching out some rough

ideas. Once I had one I was happy with, I re created
it in InDesign. In practice the general sketch didnt
work but after some tweaking I had a rough design I
was happy with.
I brought this to Draft Critiques and gained some
great insight on how to improve my design. I applied
the Critiques and got a design Im very happy with.

Montage
Description:

An insperational montage made by the blending of

two or more images, and the use of typography.

Date:

5/26/2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 01
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together smoothly, using
masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

I created an 8.5 x 11 document. I moved the images

onto the document. In some places the image didnt
quite work as I wanted it to, so I used a content-aware
fill to make the images fit the areas I wanted them to
fit.
With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged
brush, I painted away the hard image edges.
I repeated the process with each element in the
design, but the image of the leaven didnt quite match
the color scheme I was going for, so I adjusted the
colors until it felt like a unified composition.
I added some type with variance in font size to make
the verse pop the way I wanted it to.

Photo Design
Description:

A personally taken photograph that has been edited/

formatted using Photoshop.

Date:

5/21/2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05
Eric Lybbert

Program(s)/Tools:
Camera
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then
download it.
Size and crop the image.
Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and
saturation levels.
Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image.
Desaturate the selected portion of the image.
Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process:

First I formulated a basic color scheme that I felt

good about and then I found these chairs in the
library that matched my color scheme perfectly.
I photographed them from above, to create a
composition I was happy with. Then when I moved
the photo to the 8.5 x 11 layout, I adjusted it so
that the focal point of the image was right on the
intersection of two rule of thirds lines, which made
the composition visually interesting. I wanted to
add the main colors in one more place to unify the
composition so I made a border around the text box
in the three chair colors in it. This adds unity and
interest to the elements.

Brochure
Description:

A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Date:

7/10/2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 01
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four
quality images, not including the logo. One should be
clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign
so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least
three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided)
color.

Process:

I used a background of sunny blue sky to emphasize

my theme of sunlight and joy.
For the text wrapping I used the quick selection
tool in Photoshop to remove the background of the
image. I then used the refining options in the menu to
smooth out the edges of the person.
I created the logo in Illustrator using the pen tool to
make the bottle. Then I made the bottle a clipping
mask to turn it yellow and make sun rays across
it that fit the shape of the bottle exactly. Then I put
the label on and created a sun shape using the pen,
polygon, selection tool and rotation tool. Then I
rotated it and put text across it. Then I placed it into
InDesign.

Logos
Description:

Three logo variations for the same company.

Date:

Course/Instructor:

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal

image.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:

Creating this logo in Illustrator was a great creative

opportunity. After taking a vote on which of my drafts
was the best, I chose one refined it to make it more
professional. I changed the typography and font
choices, and I totally rearranged my color schemes
to create a complementary color scheme where there
wasnt a color scheme at all before. I feel like my
design benefited a lot from my revisions.
