Abstract (of a research paper written by me)

Limb amputation with hand loss could be extremely devastating as it leaves person unable to
render physical services and also implicates him socially. Presently, the exigency for research in
the sector of biomedical engineering and exponential increase in the number of amputees due to
catastrophes and natural calamities is enthralling researchers and engineers from all over the
globe to devise a solution palpable enough for the amelioration of amputees.
Today, the preponderance of conventional body-powered cable-controlled prosthesis is quite a
predicament for amputees as extensive excursions have to be generated by them. Moreover,
functionality of these prostheses is limited to gripping only. Alternatively, inclusion of motors
and sensors might succor to revamp the conventional methodologies, however, it would also
make them hefty and exorbitant.
Due to the shortcomings listed above, proposal for the automation of body powered prosthesis
with the ease of maintenance and cost along with proficiency in robust movement of fingers is
the theme of this paper. The study comprises of two main portions: one being the implementation
of SMA (Shape Memory Alloys) for the actuation of muscle wires and the other is integration of
proximity sensors with the prostheses to receive input from amputee, which is cost effective,
silent and lightweight solution to the above mentioned drawbacks.
