Introduction:
Southeast University or SEU is a private university in Banani, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The University was
established under the Private University Act, 1992 approved by the Government of the People's Republic
of Bangladesh. It's permanent campus is in 251/A & 252, Tejgaon Industrial Area, Dhaka-1208,
Bangladesh. Southeast University (SEU) was established in June 2002 as a private university under the
Private University Act 1992. The president of Bangladesh is the chancellor. The university is run by a
number of statutory bodies as required under the provisions of the Private University Act, 1992.
From the very beginning till now SEU has been following the policy of not treating education as a
commercial product, and is firmly committed to serve the society without having any commercial motive,
whatsoever. Creation of SEU was a visionary decision in the face of ever increasing demand for updated
specialized education in Bangladesh. With the phenomenal rise in enrolment coupled with quality of
education, SEU is now comparable with the best universities in Bangladesh and abroad.
Understanding the need and value of higher education to build a happy and prosperous Bangladesh, a
group of dedicated educationists and enthusiasts discussed the prospects of establishing a private
university that would uphold the torch of knowledge and would pursue quality education in a quiet,
trouble-free and congenial academic environment. Southeast University is pledged to create a knowledgebased society.
The mission of SEU is to provide higher education to students of Bangladesh at an affordable cost,
keeping in view the challenges of the twenty first century. And this mission will be achieved by imparting
world class education and providing research facilities so that the students can attain their full intellectual,
social and personal potentials. SEU is committed to develop human capital by cultivating creative
thinking in individuals. It offers education through both campus and ICT-based online modes of teaching.
The vision of Southeast University (SEU) is to flourish as a prestigious seat of learning in the South Asian
region. As a center of excellence, it aims at attracting students from all countries of the region.
The goal of the University is to provide excellent modern education for students with a view to equipping
them with the skill and knowledge necessary to lead the country in its quest for development. Along with
this, the University also aims at producing students of high moral standard in its students. Southeast
University (SEU) has the authority, under its charter, to provide instruction to confer Undergraduate and
Post Graduate degrees. It has plans to offer MPhil. and PhD programs in all branches of higher studies
including engineering, agriculture, language, law and medical sciences. It has also the authority to grant
diplomas, certificates and other academic distinctions. It has also the authority to open new Schools of
studies and new institutions on its own campus.

Characteristics:
A university comprises students from different walks of life and with different interests and skill sets. The
major purpose of every student, when joining a university, is to learn and develop. Here are some
characteristics of Southeast University :

Qualified teachers and professors: This is the first and the foremost consideration of a student as that
affects the future of the child to a large extent. Parents and students seek the best returns for their
investment in education. The quality and quantity of Southeast University is well-qualified and expert
professionals. A good university should have teachers who can impart knowledge to the students, in a
way, that helps them understand the concepts easily, So does the Southeast University has.

Good infrastructure: With good teachers, a university should also have well-built premises with wellequipped classrooms, restrooms, learning centers, libraries and eateries. The property should be big
enough to accommodate the students comfortably. Southeast University provides all of these facilities to
a student.

Understanding and able management: All the resources of a university are managed by the authority
and if a university has to run well, good management cannot be missed out on. The management of
Southeast University is capable enough of managing the students and taking care of all their security and
education needs.

World-leading research and knowledge transfer: A vibrant centre for new ideas, Southeast University
work to extend their reputation for globally excellent research. They have a deep commitment to
interdisciplinary research across all of their subject areas. Their research environment removes barriers to
the sharing of ideas. They aim to carry out research and scholarship of enduring quality and impact,
addressing the most significant challenges facing humanity such as climate change, sustainability and
global health.

International in outlook and impact: Through their networks and selective

partnerships, Southeast University welcomes international peoples and cultures to
Exeter and export our research and scholarship to the world. They actively support

Library Facilities: Southeast University is linked with journal publishers through an
international organisation named INASP/PERii. Bangladesh Academy of Sciences
(BAS) is acting as the coordinating body. This facility is IP based and work only
within SEU campus. The SEU library offers regular services such as circulation,
reference, counseling, indexing, bibliographical documentation, back up services,
retrospective searches etc. Southeast University has a library equipped with books
on the academic programs offered as well as on research and extracurricular
activities. The total collection of books and journals at is about 15000. The space
area of the library is 6,500 square feet (600 m2). It is a central library of the
university rendering services to the students and faculty.

Hostel Facilities: The University makes the best possible efforts to provide the finest services and
facilities within the hostels. Following are the facilities offered in the hostels : Food (The hostel has its
own Mess providing hygienic and nutritious vegetarian meals three times a day .Special menus are
designed for special occasions & Holydays) & Rooms with attached washroom, bed, table, chair and
almirahs. The University ensures the safety and security of the students in the hostels through a dedicated
team of security guard. There are security guards who take care that proper decorum is maintained in the
campus and are there to assist the students in case of any emergency.

Canteen Facilities: A wide choice of food is available in SEU canteens with traditional main courses,
side dishes, drinks, desserts, tea or coffee. There are also dispensers of sandwiches, beverages and snacks
at reasonable prices.
Clubs: The University have different clubs & students can join the clubs and widen their knowledge. The
university has following clubs for their students:

Health and Safety: A Medical Officer is working in SEU. The Medical officer is
available in his office from Saturday to Thursday (2.00PM-5.00PM) excepting
Government holiday for all students and stuffs.

Criticism of the Organization:

In my comparative analysis of the performance of Southeast University I have found
that Southeast Universities performance is not so much satisfactory in compare to
others rival universities. The quality of all the performance indicators is below the
benchmark.

Recommendation:

Southeast University will be the university of choice for the best and brightest students in Bangladesh
and a university of choice for all students who seek exceptional educational opportunities. Southeast
University will become a student-centered research university and an academic community. There are
some recommendations for the university like advance the University's academic, research, scholarship
and service priorities, consistent with a top tier university, and continue to promote growth and national
prominence in these areas. Enhance the teaching, research and service mission of the University by
retaining and recruiting outstanding faculty and staff. Enhance the University's learning environment to
attract and retain excellent students.Develop a university-wide emphasis on leadership as a primary role
of the flagship.

Conclusion:
The phenomenal growth of private universities indicates the important role they play in imparting higher
education in Bangladesh. These universities produce much needed highly skilled manpower. Many of
their graduates are employable both locally and internationally. The number of students that go to foreign
countries for undergraduate studies has decreased. This saves a huge amount of foreign exchange. The
graduates of these universities contribute substantially to national development.
The demand for world class private universities will increase further in future. Without private
universities national demand for higher education cannot be met. Both public and private universities
must coexist to supplement and complement each other.
