History of Standard This standard was first proposed in 1955 to provide standard dimensions for steel water pipe fittings. It was approved asa “tentative” standard on July 14, 1955. Revisions in the text were approved on Dec. 31, 1957, and were incorporated in the fourth and later printings. The revi- sions consisted of the addition of an explanatory paragraph, changes in the table for fittings for service in transmis- sion and distribution mains, and clarifica- tion of the figures detailing the various fittings. The standard was approved without further revision on Jan. 26, 1959. Il._Information Regarding Use of This Standard When purchasing steel water pipe fit- tings under this standard, the purchaser should make reference in his purchase order specifications to the following: 1. Standard used—that is, AWWA 208-83, 2, Type of fitting required, ic. elbow, tee, reducer, etc. 3. Number of pieces or segments for elbows to be furnished, 4, Type, class, and outside diameter of pipe to which the steel fitting will connect. 5. Type of end connection required, ice., plain, flanged, bell, spigot, or mechanical coupling. 6. Design pressure required. 7. Lining and/or coating required. 8, Special handling, inspection, or testing required. 9, Submittal of shop and working drawings. III, Major Revisions 1. A foreword has been added to pro- vide the following sections: “History of Standard,” “Information Regarding Use of This Standard,” and “Major Revisions.” 2. Table | was revised to delete the 4-in, size and to extend sizes to 144 in, 3. Table 2 has been completely revised. 4, Figure 3 was simplified and ‘expanded to include sizes to 144 in, 5. Table 4 was omitted because dimensions of cast-iron pipe ends, as well as other special devices, should be secured from the manufacturers of those items prior to fabrication. 6. Table 3 Alternate and Table 5 were deleted since this information is ade~ quately covered in AWWA Manual M11, Steel Water Pipe—A Guide for Design and Installation. 7. Reducing tees were added to Table Land Figure 1. 8, The smooth 90-degree elbow cate- gory was deleted from Figure | and Table 1 9. The information given in Table 1 was changed from a tabular format to a formula format in order to ascertain dimensions for tees, crosses, wyes, later- als, and reducers. A factor f was intro- duced in the new Table | to facilitate the use of formulas for computing fitting dimensions. 10. More flexibility in elbow design is permitted, with 2-, 3, 4, and S-piece elbows being included in a new Figure 2 and Table 2. Formulas for elbow layout are given to facilitate design of elbows not tabulated, C208 83 MM 254955i2 OOLON7L T a ‘American Water Works Association AWWA C208-83 (Revision of AWWA C208-59) AWWA Standard for ensions for Fabricated Steel Water Pipe Fittings Section 1—General Sec. 1.1 Scope ‘This standard provides overall dimen- sions for designing and fabricating com- mon steel water pipe fittings for sizes 6 in, through 144 in, for water transmission and distribution facilities. Sec. 1.2 Conditions Not Covered ‘This standard is intended to serve as a dimensional guide only. It is not intended to be a standard for wall thickness, pres- sure ratings, design of connections, pipe ends, or tolerance of fittings. Tolerances should be compatible with the manufac- turer's recommendation for the type of end connection selected. Many configura- tions of fittings are possible, and alterna- tives to this standard may be agreed upon. between purchaser and contractor. Rein- forcement of fittings, which may include collars, wrapper plates, or crotch plates, is not covered in this standard. Reference should be made to the applicable section in AWWA Manual MII, Steel Water Pipe—A Guide for Design and Installa- tion, for this information. Sec. 1.3 References This standard references the following documents. In their latest editions, they form a part of this standard to the extent specified herei AWWA Manual MIi—Steel Water Pipe—A Guide for Design and Installation ASTM* A234— Specification for Pip- ing Fittings of Wrought Carbon Steel and Alloy Steel for Moderate and Elevated ‘Temperatures. “American Society for Testing and Materials, 1916 Race St., Philadelphia, PA 19103, [C208 63 mm 2555S12 OOLON72 1 2 AWWA. €208-83, Sec. 1.4 Definitions Under this standard, the following defi- nitions shall apply: 1.4.1 Manufacturer: The person, firm, ot corporation that manufactures the fittings, 1.4.2 Nominal diameter: The com- mercial designation or dimension by which pipe is designated for simplicity. 14,3 Purchaser: The person, firm, corporation, or governmental subdivision entering into a contract or agreement for the purchase of any materials under this standard, 1.4.4 Symbols: formulas: Symbols used in D = Nominal diameter of a fitting run, De = Nominal diameter of a branch outlet of a tee. te = Factor (f) in Table 1 corresponding to nomi- nal diameter (D) of the run of a tee. A = Total elbow deflection angle as shown in F ure Nominal diameter as shown in Figure IF. fo = Diand D2 = Section 2—Fittings Sec. 2.1 General All dimensions for fittings if this stan- dard are related to the nominal diameter of the pipe. Actual outside diameters may be different from the nominal pipe diame- ter. If the outside diameter of the pipe is larger than thenominal diameter, the next nominal size shown in the tables should be used to compute fitting dimensions, except for elbow dimensions, for which the actual outside diameter should be used. Tangent dimensions shown in the tables are minimum dimensions for fit- tings with plain ends, Where necessary, additional length may be provided for other joint connections such as mechani- cal couplings, bells, spigots, flanges, etc. Sec. 2.2 Tees and Crosses Dimensions for tees and crosses are given in Table 1. (Refer to Figure A and Figure 18). Sec. 2.3 Reducing Tees Dimensions for reducing tees are derived by formulas to make the length of runs B proportional to outlet diameters Dz. Sec. 2.5 90-Degree Wyes Dimensions for 90-degree wyes are given in Table 1. (Refer to Figure 18.) Other angles may be used. The short side of the leg should be 6 in. or more. Stress analyses of wyes are complex. Wyes may need either pads or crotch plate reinforcement, which are not shown in Figure 18. Wye design should be checked using procedures listed in AWWA Manual MII, Steel Water Pipe—A Guide for Design and Installa- tion, and the dimensions of the wyes should be established accordingly. Sec. 2.6 Concentric and Eccentric Reducers The length of reducers is derived by the following formula, (Refer to Figure IF.) L = 4: — Dy Sec. 2.7 Elbows, General Steel welding elbows conforming to ASTM A234, Specification for Piping Fittings of Wrought Carbon Steel and Alloy Steel for Moderate and Elevated ‘Temperatures, may be used when avail- able in suitable sizes. Dimensions should be obtained from the manufacturer. In specifying fabricated elbows, the designer should consider the hydraulic characteris- tics, space requirements, and benefit-cost ratio over the expected life of the pipeline, Elbows may be fabricated from two, three, or more pieces. The optimum radius in consideration of minimum head loss and manufacturing restraints is approximately 2.5 pipe diameters. Elbows of two to five pieces are shown in Figures 2A, 2B, 2c, and 2D, For angles A or diameters D not listed in Table 2, dimensions can be computed using the formulas shown in the general notes to Table 2. 21.1 Two-Piece Elbows, 0-45 De- grees. Elbows having a deflection angle ‘A of 0-45 degrees may be fabricated in two pieces with a miter angle not to exceed 22.5 degrees (the angle included between the cut and a line drawn perpen- dicular to the center line of the elbow segment). (Refer to Figure 2A.) 2.1.2 Three-Piece Elbows, 30-90 Degrees. Elbows having a deflection angle A over 30 degrees and up to 90 degrees, inclusive, may be fabricated from three pieces so that the miter angle does not exceed 22.5 degrees. (Refer to Figure 2B.) 2.7.3 Four-Piece and Five-Piece Elbows, 45-90 Degrees. As alternates, elbows having a deflection angle Aof over 45 degrees to 90 degrees may be fabricated using four or five pieces, as indicated in Figures 2c and 2p. Sec. 2.8 Tangent Outlets In special circumstances where a stan- dard nozzle cannot be installed in the pipe for use as a blow-off, a tangent nozzle may be used. Recommended dimensions are shown in Figure 3 and Table 3. 2595Si2 OOLOW7L FT a C208 83 6 AWWA C208-83 Fig. 2A Two-Piece Elbow (0-45° ) See Not Fig. 2C_ Four-Piece Elbow (45-90° ) See Note Fig. 2D. Five-Piece Elbow (60-90° ) Nore: “a” may be extended beyond tangent line if necessary to suit joint requirements. Fig. 2 Recommended Dimensions For Water Pipe Fittings (Elbows) CAUTION Tables 2A through 2D , Dimensions for AWWA Steel Water Pipe Elbows, permit radii of elbows to be less than one pipe diameter for larger pipe to over four pipe diameters for 6-in. pipe, while in Sec. 2.7 the recommended radius is 2.5 pipe diameters in consideration of min- imum head loss and manufacturing re- straints. The hoop tension concentration on the inside of a short radius elbow \ay considerably exceed the safe work- 1g stress of the steel. The following formula should be used to calculate the appropriate steel thickness of all elbows having a radius of less than 2.5 pipe diameters: Where ‘equired elbow wall thickness (in.) lesign pressure (psi) allowable tensile stress at design pressure (psi) utside diameter of elbow (in.) S=segment length along inside of elbow as shown on Figures 28, c, and Dand as designated in the gen- eral notes for Table 2 -ament deflection angle as shown on Figure 2. cas 83 2595Sk2 GOLON?? Table 2 1. All dimensions are in inches (rounded). OD stands for outside diameter. 2. For elbows not tabulated, dimensions may be calculated from the following formulas: a. For elbows with outside diameter D = 6 in, to 36 in.: 5 = D/4 + 3, but not less than 6 in, b. For elbows with outside diameter D = 36 in. and larger: S= 12in. c. For all elbows: - $/2 Re PR + OI @ = Aj(n — 1), where n = number of pieces T = Rtan (A/2) for all diameters 3. Tables are based on OD of steel cylinder equal to the tabulated diameter. Dimensions for fabrication must be calculated from the formulas using the actual steel! cylinder OD. 4, Additional length may be required for flanges, mechanical couplings, or to meet other design conditions. 5. To suit spatial requirements, R may be increased or decreased. Al fillet welds to be Continuous and eque SE ( Section AA Reduced Seale Fig.3.
