2nd Observation _X_

You chose appropriate teaching strategies, learning experiences, and

materials to achieve your instructional objective. First, you used your welldesigned PowerPoint to identify and highlight the differences between
paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting. Next, the tenth graders paired
with partners to read an article of interest to them, Tattoo, Bling Craze
Raises Hiring Issues and to complete the accompanying worksheet.
During share-out time, student volunteers used the board to show how
quotes from the article could be written in four different ways. Then, the
class was able to work a few minutes on their own research papers to
begin to incorporate quotes. Last of all, you had the students fill out exit
slips telling you any questions they still had and/or what they learned in the
lesson. Your lesson addressed visual, auditory, kinesthetic and social
learning styles.

Evidence (Candidate and Student)

Your classroom management strategies promoted cooperation and
productivity. Your friendly smile and spring break references helped the
tenth graders feel comfortable. Student pairs were able to collaborate with
each other in reading the article and completing the worksheet. Most of
the time, your proximity kept students on task. When it didnt, you cajoled
individuals like H. to get him started after he missed the instructions. In
addition, providing extension challenges for early finishers would have
reduced the opportunities for extraneous conversations.
You skillfully organized and managed your activities, attention, and time
to engage the ninth graders in purposeful learning. You varied your
activities to include large group, partner, and independent work. As you
circulated around the room, you touched base with every student at least
once. You wisely saved time when you had multiple individuals writing their
answers on the board together.

You conveyed information and ideas in an appropriate way. Your

directions were clear and to the point, Get into groups of two. Read this
article and complete the handout. Youre going to make examples of
quotations using this article. Your easy-to-follow PowerPoint presentation
highlighted the important concepts being taught. At first, you drew
information from the tenth graders with questions such as, What is
paraphrasing?... How is it different from summarizing? Interspersing the
rest of your presentation with chances for students to show their levels of
understanding would have livened up the intro and given you immediate
feedback.
You promoted student involvement in various ways. Rather than have
the worksheet completed independently, you had the class partner up to
discuss it. As the tenth graders worked, you checked in with all of them to
see how they were doing. You also enlisted a few to write sample
quotations on the board. In this lesson, you provided opportunities for the
students to express themselves both orally and in writing.

DISP: Collaboration, Communication)

Knows how to select and construct assessment strategies and

instruments.
Uses appropriate assessment techniques to enhance his or her
knowledge of learners, evaluate students progress and performances,
and modify teaching and learning strategies.
Solicits and uses information about students experiences, learning
behavior, needs and progress from cooperating teachers and the students
themselves.
Evaluates the effect of class activities on both individuals and the class as
a whole, collecting information through observation of classroom
interactions, questioning, and analysis of student work.
Uses classroom observation and information about students as sources
for evaluating the outcomes of teaching and as a basis for reflecting on
and revising practice.

For the most part, you were pleased with your lesson. Your plan was
well-structured and flowed smoothly to your exit-ticket closure. Although
you thought your PowerPoint was boring, it was well-organized and only
needed a few more class-directed questions to break it up. The added
responses would have further engaged the students and provided more
ongoing assessment. Overall, the tenth graders seemed focused most of
the time. Consider planning in enrichment for early finishers to extend their
learning and help insure on-task behavior.
In terms of student learning, you thought that your lesson was a
success. From your observation of partner work and responses, you felt
that the tenth graders understood quotations though some needed help
when only a few words were to be used. After examining the classs
handouts and exit tickets, you will have additional evidence for evaluating
your lessons effectiveness.
