Auto Sales Analysis in India

The Indian automotive industry is growing exponentially with the introduction of a wide range
Indian-bound and global standard models. The following is the short analysis of passenger and
commercial vehicle sales.

Passenger Vehicle Sales in India in Q1 FY 16-17


The complete automotive sales analysis of Q1 FY 16-17 announced, the segment of passenger
vehicles, including passenger cars, UVs (utility vehicles) and vans, reported 6.66 percent growth in
the Indian market. In the duration of April to June 2016, the Indian PV industry sold 6,97,154 units
against 6,53, 593 units in the same period of previous fiscal.

The segment of passenger cars falls down 1.41 percent to 4,75,799 units from 4,82,614 units in April
to June 2015. The utility vehicles, including MUVs, SUVs, MPVs and compact SUVs, reported 38.04
percent growth in India with the sales of 1,76,788 units, compared to previous fiscal Q1 sales of
1,28,073units. The domestic sales of vans have increased by 3.87 percent at 44,587 units sold in Q1
FY 16-17, compared to 42,906 units in the year ago duration.
Almost around twenty new vehicles introduced, especially in the compact (sub-4metre) UV segment
so that the total PV sales increased in India. Similarly, the PV industry reported 12.14 percent sales
growth with 1,58,782 units in the export market, compared to 1,41,595 units in the first quarter of
the previous fiscal year.

Domestic Commercial Vehicles Reported 12.99% Growth in Q1 FY


2016-17
The segment of total commercial vehicles, including passenger carriers, LCVs, goods carriers and
M&HCVs, achieved 12.99 percent growth in the first quarter of this fiscal in India. The CV industry
sold a total of 1,66,966 units in the duration of April to June 2016 against 1,47,767units in the yearago period. Sales of commercial vehicles in the domestic market increased 17% in April, 17% in May
and 6% in June.

A total of 95,884 LCVs, compromising goods and passenger carriers, sold in the first quarter of this
financial year, representing a growth of 11.91% against 85,681units in Q1 of FY 15-16. The segment
of M&HCV represented 14.49 percent growth with the sales of 71,072 units in the April to June 2016
period, against 62.076 units in the last fiscal same period.

The CV industry also reported positive growth of 7.22 percent in the export market with the sales of
26,169 units in the Q1 of this fiscal. In the same period of fiscal 2016, the CV sales were closed at
24,397 units.

Top 10 selling cars in June; Maruti Alto and Dzire stood at 1st & 2nd
slots
Maruti Suzuki, countrys top carmaker has witnessed for the major drop in the segment of passenger
vehicles, including SUVs, compact cars, sedans, MPVs, in the last month. After many years, the
company was confined to first two positions in the list of top 10 selling cars in June 2016. There was
a reason behind this is the companys largest auto-component supplier, Subros Limited was
damaged with the short circuit.

The Alto and Swift Dzire models obtained first and second positions respectively, even though the
models received the low sales in the passenger car market. Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 15,750 Alto
cars in the last month and representing a drop of 25% from sales in June 2015, 21,115 units.
Similarly, the Swift Dzire sales drop by 29 percent in June 2016 compared to last year. Maruti Suzuki
sold a total of 21,886 units of Dzire, best-selling sedan, in June 2015.
All Maruti Suzuki cars received a double-digit decline in the previous month, Wagon R has 10
percent drop in the sales of 11,962 units in the last month, against 13,221 units in June 2015. The
Swift, popular hatchback, fell down to 6th position from the 3rd position with a 48 percent drop.
Hyundais Grand i10 sales grew by 41 percent in the previous month with 12,678units and the model
ranked 3rd position in the list of best-selling cars. The Renault Kwid and Maruti Ritz enter the list with
the sales of 9459 units and 4682 units and occupied 5th and 10th positions respectively. Moreover,
the Celerio hatchback dropped to 9th position with 5,797 units sales in June 2016, from 7th position in
the year-ago month.

Being a premium hatchback, the Baleno saw 6,976 units sales, but the Elite i20s y-o-y sales declined
by 17 percent in the market. Elite i20, one of the Hyundais best-selling cars, had a drop of 24
percent in April and 17 percent in May.
