GNARLY INSPIRATION

VINTAGE

The year was 1924. It was the heart of the Prohibition Era and
wines darkest hour when it was outlawed and deemed
unconstitutional. It was also the year our family first planted
vineyards in California and farmed grapes that were sold to
friends and neighbors. Story goes some of these grapes might
have been used to make wine.

The 2013 vintage produced a record-breaking crop of

exceptional quality. Moderate weather throughout the growing
season was ideal for the vines, which provided grapes with an
overall well-balanced structure and highly concentrated flavors.
Few significant heat spikes and virtually no high winds
throughout the growing season produced fruit that showcases
optimal balance of acidity and sugar, vibrant colors, structured
tannins and excellent flavor development. With no significant
weather disruptions, the 2013 vintage resulted in mature fruit
with bold flavors and an overall outstanding quality.

1924 Double Black is a Prohibition-style dark red blend that pays

homage to our familys first vineyard plantings in 1924 and bold
underground grape dealings during Prohibitions black market
of winemaking. Fruit for this limited edition blend of Zinfandel,
Merlot and Syrah was sourced from vineyards throughout
Northern California. Crafted in the throwback, field blend
style preferred by Prohibition Era speakeasies, 1924 upholds
the Gnarly Head maxim: bold and unapologetically
rebellious.
WINE
Gnarly Head 1924 Double Black delivers rich aromas of
blackberry preserves, cocoa, raspberry and caramel, setting
the stage for a juicy core of concentrated, dense blackberry
and fig jam flavors that finish with a hint of baking spice.
Jet black in the glass, pair this full-bodied wine with
equally
bold
dishes:
charbroiled
bacon
cheeseburgers, spicy sausage gumbo or pork baby
back ribs slathered in BBQ sauce.

VINEYARDS
Gnarly Head 1924 Double Black is crafted using grapes from
select vineyards throughout Northern California, specifically
the Lodi region, an area long known amongst California
winemakers as the Zin-famous appellation. Lodis climate
is ideal for growing concentrated, full-flavored grapes
well-draining sandy soil, warm summer afternoons and
cooling nighttime breezes from the Pacific Ocean.
WINEMAKING
Fruit for Gnarly Head 1924 Double Black was
harvested during the cool night hours and then
delivered to the winery. Following de-stemming, the
grapes were fermented slowly in stainless steel
fermenters and then pressed gently into stainless
steel tanks. The wine was then racked onto a
combination of French and American oak to age for
several months to further develop layers of
complexity in the final blend.
