communities need.
To provide a safe and fun place for developing English
education.
Summary
The teaching English program at GVI Quepos has so far been mainly made out of Adult English classes
in the community Cocal. The class targets everyone over the age of 15, even though younger students
occasionally join in. During the month of June, a partnership with the Red Cross was created in order
to supply its volunteers with an intensive English course. This course was to last 2 weeks, and directly
target the needs of the Red Cross volunteers.
Report
The Monday started out with planning classes as usual, where volunteers created an overview plan in
order to clearly state objectives and the purpose of the intensive English course.
The first class went along well, 11 students showed up for class and it turned out most were at a more
advanced level then at first was thought. They breezed through the materials and activity prepared
around topics like numbers, letters, greetings, family members etc. In the end of the class, students
were asked to write their name, level of English as well as what they hoped to get out of the classes.
The objectives of each student ranged from learning medical vocabulary or linked to their profession
in other way, to conversational English and pronunciation. When asked about their previous English
education, some had studied it until high school while others had no background at all.

The structure of the course consisted of group

classes on Tuesday and Wednesday, and more
individualized classes Thursday and Friday. The
individualized classes would be one-on-one if
possible, and if not in groups no bigger than
three students per volunteer. These classes
would also show how much information was
picked up during the group classes, and a way of
getting to know the students better as well.
The two weeks course ended with a cake-party and a promise of continuation of English classes. GVI
Quepos now offers English classes twice a week for the Red Cross volunteers, to further develop their
English knowledge. GVI Quepos keep working on the objectives decided, as well as further encourage
English learning throughout the Quepos community.
