Your Optics kit is sturdily built to give you years of trouble-free
service provided you take certain precautions while using the kit and do some periodical maintenance as suggested below. 1. The bulb: a. A 100 watt incandescent bulb is used as the light source in the ray box. Observe that the filament of the bulb is parallel to the movable Plano convex lens in the ray box. If you need to change the bulb, ensure that the filament is properly positioned by slightly loosening the holding screws of the bulb holder and turning the holder until the filament is properly positioned; this process is necessary whenever you change the bulb to obtain sharp rays on the display panel. While adjusting the bulb, ensure that the light shaft incident on the Slit slab in the aperture is centered and the slits are uniformly illuminated. b. A fan is provided to keep the bulb cool, thereby extending the bulbs life. Ensure that the fan is working each time you switch on the kit. If the fan is not working, get the circuit checked by an electrician and if the fan is defective, replace the fan. You can obtain the fan from us also. To prolong the life of the fan and bulb, switch off the power supply whenever the kit is not being used while conducting the experiments. Occasionally brush the fan blades gently to remove any dust settled on them. c. Do not remove the bulb from the holder, except for replacing the bulb or for cleaning the bulb. Once in 2 or 3 months, the bulb may need to be cleaned. Ensure that the bulb is at the room temperature; gently ease the bulb from the holder and clean it with a damp soft cloth. Thoroughly dry the bulb and fix it back on the holder, ensuring that the filament is parallel to the Plano convex lens. 2. The display panel:
a. Always remove the display panel from the box before
using the kit. Slide the display panel onto the crown pin adjacent to the aperture. b. Always return the display panel to the ray box after the experiments ensuring that the movable Plano convex platform is positioned closest to the aperture, the crown pin is next to the platform and the display surface is facing the wall of the ray box. 3. The Plano convex lens platform: a. Clean the Plano convex lens occasionally with a damp cloth. b. Ensure that the convex surface is facing the bulb. 4. The components: a. The components supplied are of four categories: Lenses Mirrors Acrylic slabs Glass items b. Always return the components to their respective slots in the component box. c. Clean the components occasionally with a damp cloth. d. After completing the experiments, place the ray box on top of the component box and secure with snap locks. 5. The slits: a. Always leave one of the slits in the aperture to prevent rats and insects enter the ray box. You can obtain any spare part from us. Use the parts catalogue to identify the required part, and quote its part number while ordering.
