PRECAST CONCRETE
A. What is precast concrete?
Precast concrete is a precast concrete that created in the mold with a predetermined size or
tailored to job applications so they can save cost and time efficient. Precast concrete is a
construction product produced by casting concrete in a reusable mold or "form" which is then
cured in a controlled environment, transported to the construction site and lifted into place. In
contrast, standard concrete is poured into site-specific forms and cured on site. Precast stone
is distinguished from precast concrete by using a fine aggregate in the mixture, so the final
product approaches the appearance of naturally occurring rock or stone.
B. Example precast concrete:
U-Ditch, U-Ditch is a channel of concrete reinforced with cross-sectional shape of the letter U
and can also be closed. Commonly used as a drainage channel or irrigration. This open
channel height can vary following the needs on the ground or the elevation of the desired
channel.
Box Culvert , Box Culvert is a reinforced concrete pre-printed rectangular shape that has a
spigot and socket.Usability spigot and socket box culverts is to make it impermeable against
ingress of ground water and remain united in the event of landslides. Box Culvert is
commonly used for drainage channels. Large size can be used as a bridge.
Canstein , Canstein is precast concrete that is used for the side of the sidewalk.
Fence panels, wall, Tetrapod, Arch culvert, pipe concrete, etc.
C. Precast process
Molding / mold making; precast concrete plant typically has had a workshop / special
workshop for making and mold maintenance, assembling a reinforcement (bar-catching) and
connections.
Reinforcing; reinforcement that has been assembled is placed into the mold.
Concreting; pouring concrete mix into the mold. The plant usually provided concrete
batching plant, which has a quality control computer.
Compaction; To ensure that optimum density is obtained and that specified strengths are
achieved, concrete is placed and compacted using high-frequency external vibrators.
Curing; steam curing, conventional of curing. On elements of large steam curing concrete is
given into the concrete with a veiled way with temperature 60-700o for 2-3 hours.

Handling; after the age of concrete meet, precast concrete units were transferred to the
storage / warehouse, arranged vertically and padded between the precast units.
Transport to site; precast concrete ready to be sent to site.

D. Advantages of using structure precast concrete

Quality of product is better; because it is made with tight control (in-factory); cross-section
of more standardized, high quality normally used in precast prestressed concrete
Construction Execution time is faster; performed in parallel, factory-in site.
Cost is more economical; bulk products and repetitive; the use of manpower adapted to the
needs of production, the use of scaffolding or scafolding not need
Completion easy finishing; Variation for surface finishing precast structures made during
manufacture of components; including coatings for attack-hazard such as corrosive,
soundproof.
Suitable for limited land / not extensive, reduce noise, cleaner and environmentally friendly.
E. Weakness use structure precast concrete
Uneconomical for the production of small amounts of the element type.
Keep high accuracy in order to avoid a large deviation between one element with another
element, so as not to complicate the installation in the field.
The length and shape of the precast elements are limited, according to the capacity of lifting
equipment and means of conveyance.
The maximum distance economical transportation by truck is between 150 to 350 km, but
this also depends on the type of product. As for sea transport, the maximum transport distance
can be up to over 1000 km.
F. Constraints & problems precast concrete
The main concern in planning precast concrete components such as floor plates, beams,
columns and walls is a connection.
In addition to working to distribute work loads, the connection should also serve to unite
each of the precast concrete components into one monolithic entity so as to seek the stability
of the structure
