Lithium niobate
This essay is a summary of a study of the Dielectric properties of lithium niobatetantalate crystals made by D.Xue, K. Betzler and H. Hesse , the study focuses on the
dielectric effects on the LiNbO3 due to the addition of Ta.
Lithium niobate LiNbO3 is a ferroelectric material that due to its properties has been as
a subject of investigation and usage for decades, it has many similarities to LiTaO3, and
also has similar applications, such as in optics, frequency conversion systems and
storage.
Lithium niobate crystals typically grow at the congruently melting temperature with a
composition of 48.5 mol% Li2O, the defect structure of these crystals make that most of
the dopants take place on Li sites, but in contras to many dopants, Ta is isomorphous
and replaces Ni when is introduces into the crystal structure.
When Ta atoms are introduced into the LiNbO3 crystal frame, they take place of some
Nb atoms, making Ta-O bonds, creating a mixed ferroelectric material, its then identified
as LiNb1TaO3.
The result of this investigation shows that the dielectric responses of lithium niobatetantalate decreases approximately linearly with the increase of Ta, it is also stated that
Li is much more sensitive to any sort of dopant than Nb and that replacing Li has a
stronger effect on the dielectric properties of lithium niobate, therefore when dielectric
properties are looking to be modified, the replacing of Li cations with dopants will create
a much more strong effect.
