different businesses and
individuals ended up as
successful bidders in the
auction. Each one is greatly
appreciated by 4-H members, Jacobs said, Adrian
Rentschler included.
I appreciate the support from the buyers in the
auction, Rentschler said.
Without their support,
Jackson County would not
continue a strong presence
in the livestock industry.
The money donated
through the livestock auction benefits the individual
4-H member and Jackson
County 4-H as a whole, Jacobs said, with 80 percent
of any contribution going
directly to the exhibitor
and 20 percent used to
cover costs of building improvements, educational
materials, Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics training expenses and
other 4-H activities and

projects.
R egular auction exhibitor Michaela Vancura said as buyers invest
in the future of agriculture with their donations,
she and her fellow beneficiaries invest in the
future of their projects.
The support received is
helpful for purchasing livestock and feed for the next
years projects, she said.
Rentschler agreed.
The support received
from the buyers goes toward future livestock
equipment for future
years, she said.
Jacobs said the share of
dollars the 4-H program
receives from the auction
directly supports educational, out-of-school programs for the more than

Birds back at county fair

by JUSTIN R. LESSMAN
Publisher

Birds will be back at

the 2016 Jackson County
Fair.
The Minnesota Board
of Animal Health late last
year announced its intention to lift the ban placed
on poultry exhibition and
other gatherings of birds
effective Dec. 1, 2015
a full month earlier
than originally expected. The MBHA banned
birds from fairs across
the state last spring in
the wake of an outbreak
of avian influenza, leaving the poultry barns at
the 2015 Jackson County
Fair empty.
As a result of the MBAH
announcement, birds are
once again permitted at
fairs, swap meets, exotic
sales, petting zoos and
other events where birds
are gathered or com-

ingled.
Mike Stade, president
of the Jackson County
Fair Association, said
fair board members will
welcome birds back to the
great county get-together
with open arms.
Well have it back, he
said of the youth poultry
project. Its a big project
that got hit hard last year
and left a big empty space
at the fairgrounds. From
our standpoint, the more
we can have at the fair,
the better.
The directive to prohibit birds from exhibition was made on May
15, 2015, in the midst of
the outbreak of highly
pathogenic avian influenza. The ban was put
into place to minimize
spread of HPAI and protect the states domestic
bird population.
Lifting the poultry exhibition ban comes as a

result of no new cases of

HPAI in Minnesota since
June 5 of last year.
Stade said he feels
avoiding a second consecutive year of a birdfree fair will prove key to
the future of the project.
We needed to have
it back, he said. If we
didnt have it this year,
you run the risk of kids
losing interest in the project.
During the spring 2015
outbreak, 108 farms spanning 23 counties were infected with HPAI in Minnesota. No case of avian
flu was ever detected in
Jackson County.
All infected farms completed cleaning and disinfection of their facilities
as of Nov. 13, 2015, and
104 farms were cleared
to restock their barns
with birds.
