Previous Knowledge:
Students have knowledge of population growth. Students are to know the impact and
importance of population growth in an ecosystem.
Objectives:
After a video of the role of predators and preys in an ecosystem is displayed and a power point
on the on Community interaction and its components will be displayed. Students will be able to:
1. Define predator and prey.
2. Discuss how a food chain works.
3. Identify some components of nature which keep the food chain balanced.
Content/ Concept:
Use a series of real-life examples to compare biological interactions and their impact on
organisms. The teacher presents various species relationships and students brainstorm which type of
interaction is most appropriate to represent each relationship.

Skills:

Predator- an animal that kills and eats other animals for food.
Prey- an animal that is killed and eaten by other animals for food.
Producer- an organism that can make its own food from photosynthesis or chemosynthesis.
Consumer- an organism that feeds on other organisms to survive.

1. Identify between the different types of community interactions

2. Explain the function the function of community Interactions
Attitudes:
1. Participate in an orderly manner for class discussion.
2. Respect the opinion of others during class discussion.
3. Develop the appreciation to the importance of community interactions between organisms.

Materials:
Worksheets
Computer with Internet connection
Document camera/projector or whiteboard

Teaching and Learning strategies:

Introduction:
A video showing the characteristics and role of predators in an ecosystem will be
projected for the students to review the previous knowledge.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFDiiSqGB7M
A classroom discussion is going to be held after the students watch the video. The
method of questioning is going to be used to instill the participation in class and develop
critical thinking. For example:
Using one word what can you tell about the video?
What are the different stages you saw?
Elaborate the characteristics of predators.
Explain how this is linked to community interactions in organisms.
Why it is important for ecosystems to have predators?
This questions are to make the students think about the importance of predators. Along
with the video students are to review and gain knowledge of predator prey concept. Finally
students are to explain in their own words the function of predators in an ecosystem.
Development:

1. Students will be introduced to the topic predator prey. A diagram of an

ecosystem will be displayed. The diagram will contain the different types of
organisms present in an ecosystem.
2. Papers will be distributed randomly throughout the class. Papers will contain
name of the component, and others the function or description of the component.
Students are to scramble and find their partner. Components and description are
to be paired correctly, finally students are to paste the name and description to
the diagram on the board.
3. After the students label the diagram they will be given a handout that will
reinforce the content discussed on the board.
4. Students will discuss the Purpose of predators in an ecosystem.
Conclusion:
5. Finally students will be asked questions to create an orderly classroom
discussion.

Assessment:
Students will be given a worksheet to complete.
Students are to answer the filling in blanks upon the topic discussed Community
interactions (Predator Prey).

Extended activity:
Write a reflection upon the importance of predators in an ecosystem. Explain its
function on the control of population and the impact to the stability to the ecosystem. Provide
examples to prove your explanation.
