American socialites whose extraordinary lives
spanned a century of American history from
the Civil War to World War II. Their world included

nations culture and politics: Teddy Roosevelt,
William Howard Taft, Henry and Clover Adams,

In this dual biography based on six years of archival research in the U.S. and
Europe, Skip Moskey, who rst came to D.C. in 1968, oers a fresh look at
Americas and Washingtons Gilded Age. He focuses not just on the lives of the
Andersons, but also on the intersection of wealth, celebrity, politics, gender and
race. He shines a new light on Isabel, who emerges from the pages of this book
as a shining example of the modern American woman.
Moskey is an author and editor of historical nonction. He attended
Georgetown University. Early in his career he was an adjunct instructor at
Northern Virginia Community College. His principle career from 1978 to 2010
was in scholarly publishing, corporate communications and public aairs. From
1987 until 1996, he served as the coordinator of HIV/AIDS policy and programs
for Aetna Life & Casualty (now Aetna, Inc.) in Connecticut. From 1988 to 1994 he
served on the board of directors of the National Leadership Coalition on AIDS
and was chair of its program committee for four of those years.
Moskey said, Ive just published a book on the Gilded Age that I think will be of
interest to readers of the Blade. There is a small but signicant gay angle to the
story: the attention that the American historian Henry Adams showered on young
American diplomats in the late 19th century. In the case of Larz Anderson, Adams
was in love with the young man, which I documented through Adams letters.
Skip will be in D.C. talking about the book at 6 p.m. on Sept. 13, at Anderson
House/Society of the Cincinnati.
Congratulations also to Jillian T. Weiss, who was named executive director
of the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund. TLDEF is committed to
ending discrimination based on gender identity and expression and to achieving
equality for transgender people through public education, test-case litigation,
direct legal services and public policy eorts.
Weiss is a nationally recognized transgender rights attorney and law professor
bringing three decades of legal experience to the job. Weiss succeeds Michael
Silverman, who founded the organization in 2003. Alaina Kupec and Joseph
A. Hall, co-chairs of the TLDEF board of directors, said in a statement, Jillian
has a powerful track record of ghting for the rights of transgender people in
the workplace. Her cases have resulted in landmark settlements and rulings
increasing protections for transgender employees and sending an unmistakable
message that employment bias will not be tolerated.
I have dedicated my career to ghting for the rights of the trans community
through my legal and academic work, Weiss said. At a time when our community
faces an all-out legislative assault focused on issues like bathroom access, I am
committed to ensuring that all trans people have the freedom to live authentic lives.
As a transgender woman myself, I have experienced discrimination rsthand.
Prior to her appointment, Weiss was a tenured professor of law and society at
Ramapo College of New Jersey and founded the Law Oce of Jillian T. Weiss P.C.
She has a Ph.D. in Law, Policy and Society from Northeastern University and a
J.D. from Seton Hall Law School.
Activists denounce
arrests of those in
survival sex work

The fatal shooting on July 4 of D.C.
transgender woman Deeniquia Dee
Dee Dodds, 25, in an area close to where
transgender sex workers congregate
has prompted a local LGBT-supportive
advocacy group to call on police to end
their longstanding practice of arresting
trans sex workers.
Dodds
was
found
unconscious
suering from a gunshot wound in the
neck about 3 a.m. on July 4 along the 200
block of Division Ave., N.E., which is less
than two blocks from where she lived
with her family at the Clay Terrace public
housing project.
She died nine days later on July 13 at
Prince Georges Hospital Center after
having been on life support since the
day of the shooting. Police have said they
have yet to identify a motive or a suspect
in the case, but say they have no evidence
to classify the murder as a hate crime.
During a July 16 vigil held in Doddss
honor in a courtyard next to her familys
Clay Terrace residence, family members
told news reporters that Dodds engaged in
commercial sex work at the nearby Eastern
Avenue, N.E. strip as a means of survival.
Doddss aunt, Joann Lewis, who said
she raised Dodds from infancy, told NBC
4 and Post columnist Petula Dvorak at the
vigil that Dodds was forced into sex work
after being unable to nd a regular job
due to her status as a trans woman.
And whenever she went out to turn
tricks, her family members always said:
Be sure to tell them who you are, what
you are, Dvorak quoted Lewis as saying.
Lewis told Dvorak the family members
repeated that warning to Dodds when she
left home to go out on the street on the
night of July 4 with a supply of condoms
in her purse.
Lewis and other family members
told news reporters that the family fully
accepted Dodds for who she was and
pointed out that, while some in the
neighborhood were uncomfortable with
her, many also accepted her and liked her.
Transgender activist Earline Budd, who
organized the vigil, said several young
straight men who walked by the vigil told her
they were angry that someone took Doddss
life and that they would have defended her
had they witnessed the attack.

advocacy group HIPS issued a statement

last week expressing concern that a
longstanding anti-prostitution crackdown
by D.C. police that has targeted
transgender sex workers has created an
atmosphere that forces sex workers to
ply their trade in unsafe locations.
HIPS and other local and national LGBT
supportive groups, including the D.C. Gay
and Lesbian Activists Alliance, have called
for the decriminalization of prostitution,
saying the current policy of arresting
sex workers never ends what many call
the oldest profession in the world and
unfairly targets marginalized people who
engage in sex work for nancial survival.
Our citys emphasis on arrest as our tool
for addressing sex work in our city increases
individuals like Dee Dees risk of violence,
impedes the ability of sex workers to report
acts of violence, and wastes resources
putting individuals arrested through a
revolving door of arrest and incarceration,
HIPS said in its statement.
It is clear that that the Metropolitan
Police Departments resources would
be much better used investigating
and stopping violent crimes against
transgender people and sex workers, the
statement says.
As a city, we must hold each and
every person accountable to ending
violence against our citys most
vulnerable populations, the statement
continues. The police, the mayor, our
ANC Commissioners, our neighbors, our
families we must rededicate ourselves
to ghting violence instead of wasting
time and resources on unnecessary
policing and proling.
D.C. Superior Court records show that
Dodds was arrested twice in July 2014 on
a charge of sexual solicitation as part
of a D.C. police anti-prostitution sting
operation in which an undercover police
ocer approached Dodds along the sex
worker strip on Eastern Avenue, N.E.

D.C. businessman Ted Harris dies at 73

Served in Department
of Transportation

Theodore P. Ted Harris Jr., a recognized
expert in U.S. transportation policy and
longtime airline industry consultant, died May
21 at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington,
D.C. from complications associated with
spinal fusion surgery. He was 73.
Prior to his retirement, Harris served as
president of Airline Industry Resources,
an airline industry consulting company
he founded in the 1980s in McLean, Va.
William Kiely, a business associate and
longtime friend, said Harris, a lifelong
Democrat, served as an undersecretary at
the Department of Transportation under
the administration of President Gerald
Ford in the 1970s where, among other
things, he played a role in saving Pan
American Airlines from closing its doors.
Although the airline giant eventually
went out of business in 1991, the eorts
by the government and airline industry
advocates to keep it in business in the
mid-1970s have been credited with
saving thousands of airline industry jobs
for more than 15 years.
Harris also played a role in helping the
U.S. Postal Service expand and improve
its Express Mail service in the 1980s
and early 90s through a coordinated air
transport system at a time when private
mail and parcel carriers were cutting
into the Postal Services revenue from
business customers and consumers.
The Chicago Tribune reported in 1991
that under a Postal Service contract
from 1988 through 1991, Harriss Airline
Industry Resources rm prepared a
detailed report on air transport and postal
delivery services for the Postal Service
called Air Transportation Management
Strategy: 1990 and Beyond.
In the 1980s, Harris also served as
publisher of two magazines that reported
on airline industry issues, Airline Executive
and Commuter Air.
At the time, he emerged as an
outspoken opponent of airline industry
deregulation,
writing
newspaper
commentaries and speaking on television
news programs, including the Public
Broadcasting Systems MacNeil-Lehrer
Report, urging Congress to scrap an
extensive deregulation proposal that it
eventually approved.
A Dec. 30, 1984 story in the Washington
Post reports that Harris personally led
a last-minute lawsuit to block the nowdefunct Civil Aeronautics Board, which for
years had regulated practices of U.S. airline
companies, from ending anti-trust immunity
for travel agents. Deregulation opponents

argued that the immunity status for travel

agents helped consumers by enabling
travel agents to remain independent from
airline companies and to search for the best
possible fares for passengers.
In a December 1990 commentary in the
Chicago Tribune called Air Deregulation:
Chaos Out of Order, Harris and co-author
Paul Steven Dempsey pointed out that, at
that time, deregulation polices resulted
in far fewer airline companies than there
were prior to deregulation.
Kiely and others who knew Harris said
that in addition to his airline industry
work he served diligently as an informal
counselor and mentor for people with
alcohol and substance abuse problems
in a volunteer capacity. Harris, who was
open about his own alcoholism and his
success in overcoming it through a 12step program, often took the initiative
to take under his wing others struggling
with drinking or drug problems, including
members of the LGBT community.
In one of many similar examples, Kiely said
a neighbor from McLean, Va., who moved
next door to Kielys home near Albuquerque,
N.M., told him about a son who became
addicted to drugs after completing his service
in the military, where he performed air trac
control-related work.
After he got out he got into drugs, but
he was nally doing OK, was married and
had a kid, Kiely quoted the neighbor as
saying. To my amazement, he told me a
guy named Ted Harris was instrumental
in getting him o drugs and even got
him a job as an air trac controller at
Washington National Airport, Kiely said.
According to Harriss sister, Rosemary
Harris Abate, Harris was born in New
York City, where he attended St.
Raymonds Elementary School and
graduated from Xavier Military Prep
High School in Manhattan. He received
his undergraduate degree in business
from New Yorks Fordham University
and received masters degrees from
both the University of Tennessee and the
University of Maryland, Abate said in a
family prepared obituary.
Kiely said Harris later taught business
at the University of Maryland. Harris
served on the board of directors of

River Park Mutual Homes, a cooperative
apartment and townhouse development
in Southwest D.C. where Harris lived
since the mid-1990s.
Friends said Harriss friendly demeanor
and support for their personal needs
continued in recent years despite his
own serious medical challenges. He
had been under treatment for an auto
immune disorder called Myasthenia
Gravis for more than 10 years. In April, he
underwent complicated and risky spinal
fusion surgery at Georgetown University
Hospital for a spinal condition that
doctors told him could lead to paralysis if
not corrected by surgery.
Following the surgery he spent nearly
four weeks at two local rehabilitation
centers undergoing physical therapy to
help him recover from the spinal operation.
He was taken to Sibley Memorial Hospital
on May 21 after developing a urinary tract
infection that doctors said appears to have
triggered a heart attack or pulmonary

embolism that took his life.
He loved the outdoors, particularly
sailing the Intra Coastal Waterway and
the Chesapeake Bay, Abate said.
Ted was very fortunate in having
amazingly kind friends to whom the
family is extremely grateful, Abate said.
If anyone wishes to remember Ted,
please do so by doing something kind for
someone else today.
Harris is survived by his sisters
Rosemary Abate and her husband Robert
of Hopkinton, Mass., and Virginia Harris
Bartot and husband Morris of Chicago, six
nieces and nephews, and many friends in
Washington, D.C. and across the nation.
A memorial gathering in honor of his
life is scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug.
6, in the upstairs room at Mr. Henrys
restaurant at 601 Pennsylvania Ave., S.E.,
Washington, D.C. A scattering of his ashes
at the Chesapeake Bay is scheduled to
take place shortly after the memorial.
Metro exonerates bus driver in anti-gay incident

An inquiry conducted by Metro has exonerated a bus driver accused in
a complaint led by a gay passenger that he agreed with another passenger
whom the complaint says was glad that 49 people were shot to death at a gay
nightclub in Orlando on June 12.
Gay D.C. resident Dwayne Smith, 54, stated in a written complaint led with
Metro that an adult male passenger who made the anti-gay remarks boarded
the H8 bus in the citys Brookland neighborhood on June 13, one day after the
Orlando shooting incident.
Smith said he was sitting near the door of the bus and near the driver
when the passenger in question boarded the bus and engaged the driver in a
conversation. He said the passenger remained standing next to the driver.
He said he was glad that they shot the gay people and talked negatively about
gays and lesbians, Smith stated in his complaint. To my surprise, the bus driver
was agreeing with everything he said, Smiths complaint says.
Metros Customer Services Director Jeremy Franklin contacted Smith the next
day acknowledging that Metro received the complaint and informing Smith that
Metro ocials had opened an investigation into the matter.
In a July 11 email to Smith, James Wynne, acting chief of Metros Fair Practice
division, informed Smith that the transit agencys inquiry into the complaint
found that it could not substantiate the claim that the driver said anything
improper or agreed with the anti-gay statements made by the other passenger.
My oce has completed our inquiry into the allegations of anti-gay conduct you
recently made against a Metro Bus Operator, Wynne said in his email to Smith.
It is unfortunate that the unidentied bus patron made the inappropriate
anti-gay comments you witnessed, and which our bus operator acknowledged
occurred, Wynne said. However, you acknowledged during our inquiry that you
did not actually hear the bus operator makes any negative comments against
gay citizens, and that you could only hear what the patron was saying.
Wynne added, It appears your complaint was based on your assumption that the
bus operator agreed with the patron who was making the inappropriate comments.
According to Wynne, the bus operator stated that he was attempting to
dissuade the patron from continuing his remarks in a low and calming voice. He
further stated that this was his attempt to diuse the situation.
Smith told the Blade that hes skeptical about the ndings of the Metro inquiry.
It just didnt feel right, he said. It just felt like it was a corporate answer and
a canned response.

GOP delegates ratify anti-LGBT platform

Arms opposition to
marriage, support for
ex-gay therapy

CLEVELAND Delegates at the

Republican National Convention ratied
this week with little opposition a party
platformconsidered to containthe most
anti-LGBT language in history.
As Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), chair of
the platform committee, presided over the
convention, as delegates approved the 66page documentby voice vote at 4:42 p.m.
Monday. The number of ayes among the
2,470 delegates seemed overwhelming
compared to the barely audible nays.
Despite
eorts
from
pro-LGBT
Republicans to remove opposition to samesex marriage from the 2016 platform, the
documentseeks to reverse the U.S. Supreme
Court decision in favor of marriage equality
through either judicial reconsideration or
a constitutional amendment returning the
issue to the states.
Virgil Goode, a Virginia delegate and
former six-term member of the U.S. House,
told the Washington Blade at the Republican
convention he backs the platform
languagein opposition to the ruling.
I think the Supreme Court legislated,
Goode said. The Supreme Court is not the
decider of what marriage is. It should be
the individual states have that right. They
way overstepped their bounds on that.
Goode said allowing same-sex couples
to obtain marriage licenses and have
those relationships recognized should
be up to the states.
You have in the United States, including
California, the people voted for a denition
of marriage, and I think that vote should
stand, that the Supreme Court shouldnt
be overriding, Goode said.
In addition to opposition to same-sex
marriage, the platform also objects to
use of federal law to ensure transgender
people can use the restroom consistent
with their gender identity, indicates support
for widely discredited ex-gay conversion
therapy and endorses the First Amendment
Defense Act, a religious freedom bill that
would enable anti-LGBT discrimination.
Joseph Knox, a 20-year-old alternate
delegate from Washington, N.C., said he agrees
withlanguage in the platform on transgender
restroom use which is consistent with a
law in his state signed by Gov. Pat McCrory
Republican National Convention delegates met at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland on
July 18.

requiring transgender people to use public

restroom according totheir birth certicates,
not their gender identity.
I support that because I believe its
the duty of our government in order to
protect people for the cases where it
may abused, Knox said. I understand
where the argument is made for people
and their rights, and they feel they need
to use the bathroom of their choice.
However, in public schools, or taxpayer
buildings, or stu like that, then it should
be up to your birth certicate, and thats
where you should have to go.
Knox
said
he
also
absolutelybackslanguage in the platform
in opposition to the Supreme Courts
decision in favor of same-sex marriage.
I believe as a conservative, as a
Republican, that the federal government
has taken leaps and bounds that are
involving themselves within states rights
way too much, Knox said. It wasnt
mentioned in the Constitution. Our
Founding Fathers were not worried about
that along with a lot other things.
Knox
added
he
believes
the
establishment of the Department of
Education is also unconstitutional.
Things like that should be left up to the
individual states, he said.
Delegates at the convention who
spoke about the language in the platform
against LGBT rights were largely in
support of those planks. Many of the
delegates and alternate delegates at the
Quicken Loans Arena refused to speak
with the Washington Blade on the subject
of gay rights in the party platform.
Dwayne Collins, a delegate from
the Dallas area, said he agrees with

the platforms opposition to same-sex
marriage on the basis that marriage
between a man and a man, and a woman
and a woman, is just not biblical.
In response to the platforms
endorsement of ex-gay conversion
therapy, Collins indicated support for that
language as well.
There should not be anything to
force anybody to do such therapy, but
if its out there and available, then, yes,
Collinssaid. But to force somebody into
therapy, no, no, not at all.
Collins, who identied himself as
a small business owner, also voiced
concerns about non-discrimination laws
threatening the livelihoods of those
oeringwedding-related services.
I feel intimidated by what the
gay movement is doing to my
business,Collins said. I own a wedding
venue, OK? Its privately owned. I rent it
to people for weddings, but its got to be
a man and a woman. Now in the state of
Texas, I have a little bit of protection, but
in other states, if you dont do that, you
get sued. And thats my business, they
are infringing on my rights. Thats why
we got to come to a consensus here and
say, Hey, enoughs enough. You got your
rights; we got our rights.
A North Dakotadelegate, who refused
to oer his name, said in response to
the language, Im a live-and-let-live
guy. Asked if he supports the platform
calling for reversal of the Supreme Court
decision and returning the issue of samesex marriage to the states, he replied, I
prefer that when states can make their
own decisions.
Joel Craig, an 18-year-old delegate from
Colorado Springs, Colo.,and pledged to Sen.
Ted Cruz (R-Texas), said he supports platform
language in opposition to the Supreme
Courts decision on same-sex marriage
because states should be allowed to choose
what their denition of marriage is.
I think that this is a deal for the states,
Craig said. The states are in charge of
issuing marriage licenses, why then are
they not in charge of how the marriage
licenses are issued?
Not every delegate at the convention
was behind the anti-LGBT planks in the
Republican Party platform.
Sharon Jackson, a 52-year-old delegate
from the Anchorage area of Alaska and
pledged to Trump, said shes against the
platform language and thinks same-sex
couples should be able to wed.
I feel that everyone should have the
freedom to feel and do what they choose,
and thats what America is all about,
Jackson said.
LGBT advocates blasted the platform
upon its ratication by delegates. The Log
Cabin Republicans, which had previously
dubbed the platform the most anti-LGBT
in the partys 162-year history, placed a
full-page ad Monday in USA Today with
amessage denouncingthe document.
LOSERS! MORONS! SAD! No, these
arent tweets from Donald Trump, the
ad says. This is what common-sense
conservatives are saying about the most
anti-LGBT platform the Republican Party
has ever had. Out of touch, out of line, and
out of step with61% of young Republicans
who favor same-sex marriage.
For a time, eorts among pro-LGBT
Republicans were underway for a
motion on the convention oor to strip
the platform of its anti-LGBT language.
A minority report signed by 37 delegates
of the platform committee petitioned the
Republican National Committee to replace
the platformwith a 1,200-word statement
of 17 core principles of the Republican Party
with neutral language on LGBT issues.
Although only 28 delegates are needed
for a successful petition, the eorts
failed when the delegates who initiated
the report Boyd Matheson of Utah
andDavid Barton of Texas disavowed it.
Annie Dickerson, a New York member
of the platform committee and adviser
to GOP philanthropist and LGBT rights
supporter Paul Singer, said the goal now
is to advance LGBT non-discrimination
legislation regardless of the platform.
Polling on non-discrimination is
going o the charts on the Republican
side, Dickerson said. But those are just
not the people that were those delegates,
which is why Gio and I are here, to give rise
to that voice, so we can be a bigger tent
because this is not the Big Tent document.

SEVEN MYTHS OF ESTATE PLANNING

This is the fourth in a series of seven articles to
help you understand what you do know, dont
know and should know about estate planning.
It is a flat-out myth that you are
required to include relatives in your Will.
The confusion arises because of what
happens if you die without a valid Will.
In that case, there are rules that put your
relatives at the top of the list to receive
your assets. If you are single or your
spouse is not alive, and you dont have
children, then your parents, siblings or
even cousins are generally the next in
line. The law does not care whether
you have a good relationship with those
biological family members, or whether
they need the money, or whether the
money could do more good elsewhere.
But the good news is that if your create
a valid Will, you get to write your own

rules. Members of your family only get
what you want them to have if you
want them to have anything at all.
A lot of people feel that it is their
familial duty to pass assets on to the next
generation or to siblings. You certainly
can, but it is rarely a requirement unless
you have minor children. Many of my
clients think about naming their nieces
and nephews as beneficiaries. In fact,
you have many meaningful options
that go beyond enriching those young
people who might stand to inherit
significant assets from their parents or
grandparents.
I like to ask a simple question: what
is it that you worked your whole life to
accomplish when you die? Of course,
the answer is rarely simple. To illustrate
the point, I challenge you to add up all
your assets, including life insurance
policies and retirement accounts and
to pretend that all that money is in
your checking account. Lets say that

number is $1 million, which is not an
uncommon amount these days. Then
write 10 pretend checks of $100,000
each and imagine what would happen
if you handed one to each of the family
members you might include in your Will.
Hopefully, the money would achieve
something incredibly meaningful both
to you and the recipients.
Those resources whether they
would be $25,000 in your case or $2.5
million could certainly buy your nephew
a BMW. (If you own a BMW dealership,
please disregard that last comment.)
But you might want to consider what
that same amount of money would
accomplish if it was given to a cause
that is meaningful to you, perhaps gay
rights, a scholarship at your alma mater,
the environment, the performing arts,
animal welfare, or many others. In
reality, your assets could be enough to
change the world and allow you to leave
a truly meaningful legacy.

I realize that all this is deeply
personal and I do not intend to make
light of the serious choices involved.
However, many people do not think
through the consequences and
alternatives of simply telling their
lawyer to draft a Will that divides my
assets among my family when I die.
And you may relate to the alternatives
more happily than to the people who
share your genes.

Anti-LGBT attacks, plagiarism, rules ght mar convention

platform target Clinton,
Dems, gays

CLEVELAND On the rst night of the
Republican National Convention, two
dierent speakers Monday exemplied
the partys desire of LGBT outreach on
one hand and continuing attacks on LGBT
people on the other.
Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who served
in both Iraq and Afghanistan before
becoming director of the Defense
Intelligence Agency, criticizedthe Obama
administrations eort to advance LGBT
rights in which he called President Obama
spineless and Hillary Clinton reckless.
Our soldiers, our soldiers deserve
to hear from our leaders with clarity
and precision, Flynn said. Too often,
way too often, our troops are instead
are distracted by trivial matters, trivial
matters about what words to use, what
terminology is politically correct and what
bathroom door to open up. My God, my
God, war is not about bathrooms, war is
not about political correctness or words
that are meaningless.
Its hard to say what exactly the
bathroom remarks were intended to
mean, but given the recent national
debate on transgender use of restrooms,
it could be a reference to the end of the
ban on transgender military service. It
could also be an attack on Obamas eort
to repeal Dont Ask, Dont Tell, a law
that prohibited openly gay people from
serving in the armed forces.
The nations largest LGBT group,
the Human Rights Campaign, took the
remarks as an attack on transgender
service and condemned Flynn via Twitter.
It took 10 years for transgender heroes
to be able to serve openly. At #RNCinCLE

Former New York City Mayor Rudy
Giuliani, who energized the crowd more
than any other speaker Monday night,
on the other hand oered a gay-inclusive
vision as he praised police ocers in the
aftermath of fatal attacks targetingthem.
We say thank you to every police
ocer and law enforcement agent whos
out tonight, protecting us, black, white,
Latino, of every race, every color, every
creed, every sexual orientation, Giuliani
said. When they come to save your life,
they dont ask if you are black or white,
they just come to save you.
The line may have inspired the loudest
applause for the night at the convention,
MELANIA TRUMP delivered a speech Monday that was condemned for its plagiarizing of
Michelle Obamas speech to the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

although Giuliani was well-received

throughout his entire speech as he
bashed Obamas policies, criticized Hillary
Clintons handling of Benghazi and praised
the potential of a Trump presidency.
Gregory Angelo, president of Log Cabin
Republicans, said Giulianis remarks had
a greater eect on the crowd than Flynns
attack.
Judging by the reaction from the
crowd I witnessed in the arena, its clear
Giulianis inclusive message resonated
far more than Flynns rambling remarks,
Angelo said.
Both speakers made the remarks

just hours after the delegates ratied a
Republican platform considered the most
anti-LGBT in history. Among other things,
the platform seeks to overturn the U.S.
Supreme Court decision in favor of samesex marriage and opposes laws enabling
transgender people to use the restroom
consistent with their gender identity.
TJ Helmstetter, a spokesperson for the
Democratic National Committee, said
the GOPs extremism was on full display
regardless of remarks from Giuliani.
Even the Log Cabin Republicans admit
their party just adopted the most antiLGBT platform in history, Helmstetter
said. Not enough fog machines in the
world exist to hide the discrimination and
divisiveness at the RNC this week.
Another speaker on Monday was Willie
Robertson, CEO of Duck Commander and
star of A&Es hit series Duck Dynasty,
which is known for stars who hold
anti-LGBT views. Although Robertson
didnt say anything anti-LGBT during his
remarks, his show was once cancelled
after co-star Phil Robertson decried
homosexuality as a sin.
Melania Trump, wife of presumptive
nominee Donald Trump, was the
highlighted speaker of the evening.
Despite Trumps reputation for running a
campaign based on demonizing minority
groups, Melania Trump insisted he would
be an inclusive leader as president.
Donald intends to represent all of the
people, not just some of the people,
Melania Trump said. That includes
Christians, Jews and Muslims. It includes
Hispanics and African Americans and
Asians and the poor and the middle class.
As rst noticed on Twitter by Los
Angeles-based Jarrett Hill, large portions
of Melania Trumps speech seemed to
have been lifted from rst lady Michelle
Obamas speech during the 2008
Democratic National Convention.
Also on Monday, the Never Trump
movement, which sought to deprive
Trump of the Republican presidential
nomination, seems to have met its end
after the delegates approved the rules as
written by the Rules Committee.
Republican opponents of Trump were
seeking a conscience clause allowing
delegates to select a nominee of their choice
as opposed to being forced to vote for Trump,
which didnt make it into the nal rules.
Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.), presiding
as chair, sought a voice vote twice on
accepting the rules but after the second
vote, determined the ayes had won. A
brief oor ght ensued in which delegates
alternately chanted, U-S-A! U-S-A! and
Trump! Trump! Trump!
A Utah delegate sought a roll-call vote.
Although nine states initially supported it,
Womack said some delegates withdrew
support and only six states had valid
requests. Seven were necessary.
Christian Berle, a gay D.C. delegate
pledged to Ohio Gov. John Kasich and a
proponent of the Never Trump eort,
said the delegates decision to accept the
rules as proposed is very disappointing.
There are a large degree of delegates
from across the country who believe that
the rules report should have included a
conscience clause in particular to allow
delegates to support who they fully
believe should run the party and run the
country, Berle said.

GOP seeks LGBT support by invoking Orlando

NRA says it protects gun
rights regardless of
sexual orientation

CLEVELAND Amid attacks onHillary
Clintons character and calls for her
incarceration, Republicans on the second
night of the GOP national convention
subtly sought to obtain LGBT support to
further their goals.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), whos
defending himself against a challenge from
progressive champion and former Sen. Russ
Feingold, invoked the Orlando shooting
when he recalled provoking Clinton to say,
What dierence does it make? during a
Senate hearing on Benghazi.
It made a dierence to the young
men and women dancing on a summer
night at a club in Orlando, Johnson said.
And it made a dierence to the families
watching reworks at the celebration of
freedom by asking a simple question,
Why did you not just pick up the phone
and call the survivors?
Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA
Institute for Legislative Action, invoked
protection of gay people when he called
his organization the largest and oldest
civil rights organization in America.
We ght for the rights of all Americans,
regardless of race, religion or sexual
orientation because the right to protect
your life is the most precious right you
have, Cox said.
The remarks stand in contrast to
speeches from individuals at Republican

National Conventions in years past
seeking to build support by demonizing
gay people and railing against LGBT rights.
Jason Lindsay, executive director of the
Pride Fund to End Gun Violence, said in
response to Coxs remarks the 49 people
left dead after the Orlando shooting no
longer have Second Amendment rights,
nor do the ve Dallas ocers gunned
down by a weapon of war or the three
ocers murdered in Baton Rouge.
The NRA only protects the bottom
line of gun manufacturers, ignoring the
majority of Americans who support
commonsense gun reforms, Lindsay
said. Pride Fund to End Gun Violence is
standing up to the NRA by supporting
candidates committed to reforming our
gun laws to make all Americans safer. It
is time to take back our public and private
places from the threat of gun violence that
has proliferated under the NRAs watch.
High-prole speakers on the second
night of the convention, included Donald
Trump, Jr., New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie
and conservative commentator and
former neurosurgeon Ben Carson.
In the wake of the U.S. Justice
Department declining to prosecute
Clinton for using a personal email server
during her tenure as a secretary of state,
Christies remarks consisted of recalling
Clintons actions, and asking delegates if
shes guilty or not guilty. Predictably, each
time the audience replied, Guilty!
I am going to be specic so you can
render your verdict tonight on the basis
of the facts, Christie said. Lets go to
North Africa. She was the chief engineer
of the disastrous overthrow in Libya.

strategy, their economy is in ruins, there is
death and violence in the streets, and ISIS
is dominating that country. Hillary Clinton
as a failure for ruining Libya and creating
a nest for terrorist activity, answer me
now, is she guilty or not guilty?
Coming o remarks during a breakfast
earlier in the day in which he called
transgender people an absurdity,
Carson decried what he called secular
progressivism changing America.
The secular progressive agenda
is antithetical to the principles of the
founding of this nation, Carson said. If
we continue to allow them to take God
out of our lives, God will remove himself
from us. We will not be blessed and our
nation will go down the tubes.
Also during the second day of the
convention, delegates formally anointed
Donald Trump as their Republican
presidential nominee through a roll-call

vote from each of the states delegates.
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence was also
formally nominated as the Republican
Partys choice for vice president.
Putting Trump over the top to reach
the 1,237 votes needed to claim the
nomination was the declaration of
votesfrom the delegation from New York,
Trumps home state. Donald Trump, Jr.,
read the declaration of 89 votes pledged
to the Republican presidential nominee
from the state.
Representing the delegates on behalf
of D.C. was Jose Cunningham, whos gay
and chair of the D.C. Republican Party. In
accordance with the results of the primary,
Cunningham called 10 votes for Sen.
Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and nine votes for
Ohio Gov. John Kasich. However, the chair
presiding over the count under party rules
called each of the 19 votes for Trump.

small signs of progress

CLEVELAND The rst openly gay
member of the Republican Partys
platform committee on Tuesday said she
does not plan to leave the GOP.
Rachel Ho, a defense analyst for the
American Action Forum in D.C., made
the comment as she spoke about her
partys anti-LGBT platform at a panel
that Equality Ohio, a statewide advocacy
group, held at the New West Theatre in
Clevelands Ohio City neighborhood.
She acknowledged there is some bad
stu on bathrooms and hurtful language
on gay parenting and adoption in the
platform. Ho also noted there is a veiled

reference to so-called conversion therapy.
It no longer says conversion, she said.
Were supposed to thank them that it
only says therapy, but well take small
signs of progress as mini-victories.
The panel took place a day after
delegates to the Republican National
Convention approved their partys
platform that Log Cabin Republicans
described as the most anti-LGBT in the
GOPs history.
Ho said the draft platform that the
committee received from the Republican
National Committee was much better on
LGBT issues.
It then went into a sort of family values
subcommittee and came out worse, she said.
Ho said the full committee debated
three proposed amendments.
One would have removed what she
described as traditional marriage

language from the platform and
replaced it with a message of inclusion,
to basically respect and acknowledge a
diversity of opinion within the Republican
Party on this issue.
Another
proposed
amendment
would have acknowledged the LGBT
community around the world as victims
of violence and extremism. The third
proposed amendment would specically
name and call the LGBT community as
the victims of the June 12 massacre at
the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla.
Ho said the debate took place a
month to the day after a gunman killed
49 people inside the gay nightclub.
Im dismayed to report that that
amendment along with the other two
were defeated pretty soundly by the
committee, she said.
Ho said that 23 members of the

committee supported the marriage
amendment.
[It was] clearly not enough for a
win, but it is . . . almost a quarter of the
committee, she said. So that one was
actually an encouraging sign to me.
Ho spoke shortly before she
introduced Jim Obergefell, the lead
plainti in the U.S. Supreme Court case
that extended marriage rights to samesex couples throughout the country in
June 2015.
It was somewhat awkward to talk
about marriage because were way past
that as a country, as an LGBT community,
she said.
Ho added that the platform
committee is the last stronghold of
traditional marriage advocates within
the Republican Party.

Trumps VP pick has long anti-LGBT record

Pence signed religious
freedom bill in Indiana

Donald Trumps running mate, Indiana
Gov. Mike Pence, has a long anti-LGBT
record that includes signing into law a
religious freedom bill enabling antiLGBT discrimination.
Called by some in the media a cautious
choice for Trump, Pence is a known
social conservative and supported in
the Republican primary Sen. Ted Cruz
(R-Texas). (Trump ended up winning
Indiana in the primary anyway even
though Pence backed his rival.)
Pence is reviled by many in the LGBT
community. The governor rose to national
prominencelast year after he signed into
law Senate Bill 101, which prohibited
the state from taking action against
an individual acting on sincerely held
religious beliefs, including the refusal of
services to LGBT people.
There has been a lot of misunderstanding
about this bill, Pence said at the time. This
bill is not about discrimination, and if I
thought it legalized discrimination in any
way I wouldve vetoed it.
The newly enacted law ignited a

restorm in Indiana as LGBT advocates,
the business community and local media
condemned the measure and called for
its repeal. Salesforce announced it would
no longer do business in the state out of
fear its customers and employees could
be subject to discrimination. Connecticut,
New York and D.C. were among the
jurisdictions that instituted bans on statesponsored travel to the state.
Pence seemed to exacerbate criticism
over the law when he couldnt deny during
an appearance on ABCs This Week the
law would enable discrimination against
LGBT people. Faced with increasing
pressure, Pence signed a x to the
religious freedom law clarifying the law
doesnt allow anti-LGBT discrimination,
although churches, ministers and nonprot religious organizations would be
allowed to act on anti-LGBT bias.
According to a 2015 survey by Greenberg
Quinlan Rosner Research, 75 percent of
state residents said passing the state law
was bad for Indianas economy and 70
percent said businesses shouldnt be able
to refuse services to someone because of
sexual orientation or gender identity.
Chad Grin, president of the Human
Rights Campaign, condemned Trump in
a statement for choosing Pence and said
the candidate hasrecommitted himself to

ananti-LGBT agendawith the selection.
Donald Trump just doubled down on
his agenda of hate and discrimination by
choosing the notoriously anti-LGBTQ Mike
Pence for his ticket, Grin said.Mike Pence
has never left any question about his animus
toward LGBTQ people, from peddling a
hateful and damaging right to discriminate
bill in Indiana last year, to his longstanding
opposition to marriage equality positions
shared by Donald Trump.
John Podesta, chair of Hillary for
America, said in a statement Trump
has chosen an incredibly divisive
and unpopular running mate whos
espoused discriminatory politics and
failed economic policies.
Pence is the most extreme pick in a
generation and was one of the earliest

governor arent limited to him signing the
religious freedom law. After the Obama

administration issued guidance ensuring
transgender students have access to
the restroom consistent with their
gender identity, Pence said, The federal
government has no business getting
involved in issues of this nature.
Pence, an opponent of same-sex
marriage, backed a proposed state
constitutional amendment in Indiana
seeking to ban same-sex marriage, but
the measure failed in the legislature. The
governor supported eorts to defend
the states statutory ban on same-sex
marriage as litigation proceeded against
the law and ultimately won marriage
equality in Indiana.
Pence has held anti-LGBT views long
before he was elected governor. As a
member of the U.S. House from 2003
to 2013, Pence as a Family Research
Council-backed lawmaker consistently
received a score of 0 on the Human
Rights Congressional scorecards for each
of the ve terms he was in oce.
Pence voted in favor of a U.S.
constitutional amendment that would
have banned same-sex marriage in 2004
and 2006 and opposed Dont Ask, Dont
Tell repeal, a version of the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act and hate crimes
protections legislation.

Trump said on Monday that fewer people
would have been killed inside the Pulse
nightclub if a club-goer had shot the
gunman with their weapon.
What happened to all those people,
said Jan Morgan, founder of Armed
American Women, as she spoke at the
America First rally in Settlers Landing in
downtown Cleveland. If one citizen had
been in that club with a gun, they could
have stopped [it.]
Morgan who owns a shooting range
in Hot Springs, Ark., from which Muslims
are banned had a handgun tucked into
her waistband as she spoke to hundreds
of people who attended the rally that
radio host Alex Jones and GOP operative
Roger Stone organized.

nightclub on June 12.
Trump in the days after the massacre

from those comments.

Hardaway. Why the hell hasnt somebody

Clinton as a bitch.

A handful of Trump supporters taunted
a group of protesters who gathered on the
street adjacent to the rally. Several police
ocers broke up a scue that erupted
between two of them on the sidewalk.
Many of the protesters who gathered
outside the America First rally attended
an anti-Trump protest that took place
earlier in the day near the Cleveland
Convention Center.
Cameron Childers, a student at Case
Western Reserve University who is originally
from Texas, wore a white T-shirt that had
the hashtags #BlackTransLivesMatter and
#BlackLivesMatter written on it. Childers
criticized Trump and the Republican
Partys platform during a brief interview
with the Blade.
Their politics are based o of human
rights violations, said Childers. What
Trump stands for and what the RNC
stands for is really the oppression of a lot
of the people who are out here today.

on Tuesday night urged LGBT people to
combat radical Islamic extremism.
The featured speaker at the event,
which was called Wake Up and took place
at Wolstein Center Ballroom at Cleveland
State University, was Milo Yiannopoulos,
a provocative gay conservative activist
and journalist.
Wearing a white tank top with the image
of a gunin rainbow colors and the words
We Shoot Back, Yiannopoulos said the
time has come for the LGBT community
to separate itself from the progressive
movement to take on Islamic extremism.
In the aftermath of a shooting in
Orlando at a gay nightclub by a follower
of Islamic extremism, Yiannopoulos said
while the left once supportedgay people,
thats no longer the case.
Growing up gay wasnt that fucking
bad, lets be honest, Yiannopoulos said.
But I still dont see the reason why the
left-wing press mollycoddles and panders
to an ideology that wants me dead.
Yiannopoulos announced at the event he
would travel to Sweden next week to lead
a Pride parade in what he called a Muslim
ghetto in Stockholm. Yiannopoulos said
he draws no distinction between Islam as
a whole and Islamic extremism, although
he acknowledged some in the audience
may disagree with him.
Known as a provocateur, Yiannopoulos
has made comments on social media
saying it should legal to hunt any
man with over 20 percent body fat,
compared feminism to cancer and set
up a scholarship with funds available
only to white males. A Trump supporter,
Yiannopoulos said during the event
Trump is the most pro-gay candidate in
American electoral history.

before he was reportedly banned
permanently from Twitter for a series of
tweets against Ghostbusters star Leslie
Jones that were deemed abusive. As a
result, Yiannopoulos said he intends to
make the lives of people working for the

under which gay people are happy and
successful and have rights.
The estimated 500 attendees at the event,
billed as the most fab party at the RNC,
were predominately young white men,
many of whom were wearing Make America
Great Again hats in support of Republican
presidential nominee Donald Trump. A line
of attendees seeking to take photos with
Yiannopoulos spanned a room adjoining the
ballroom where the event took place.
David Grin, a gay 24-year-old Georgia
resident, came to the event wearing a
Trump campaign hat and three buttons
in support of the presidential candidate.
I like Trump because hes going to
secure our borders, hes going to put
America rst and, more importantly, hes
the most pro-gay candidate in the race,
Grin said. Hillary Clinton wants to bring
people in from cultures that are very hostile
to gays. The countries that she wants to
bring people in from are countries that
throw gays o buildings, stone them. It is
not very good. I want people who believe
in our values to come here.
Some Syrian refugees coming to the
United States are eeing anti-LGBT
persecution at the hands of the Islamic
State. The White House has said LGBT
refugees would be one of the priority
groups of refugees seeking asylum in the
United States.
Devin Conway, a 21-year-old student
at Georgia Southern University, said he
came because he wanted to surround

himself with like-minded people and to
celebrate not only Trump winning the
nomination, but hopefully winning the
presidency.
There are people from all walks of
life here, gay, straight, reporters, nonreporters, Conway said. I think its
beautiful that we can all come together
for one cause, and think thats what
Trumps message is really all about, and
I really hope that we can spread it to the
rest of the country.
Other speakers at the event warned
against the dangers of Islamic extremism
and urged LGBT people to pay heed to
the threat.
Chris Barron, a gay political consultant
and former board chair of the nowdefunct gay conservative group GOProud,
said Trump is making the Republican
Party more accepting for LGBT people all
across this country.
The left wants us to believe that this
is an election thats going to be about
bathrooms or whos going to pay for our
wedding cakes, but LGBT people and
our allies know that this is a question
of life or death, Barron said. We saw
what happened in Orlando. We have a
radical Islamic ideology out there that is
dedicated to exterminating LGBT people
all across this globe.
Also speaking at the event was Pamela
Geller, an anti-Islamic conservative
activist who came to the event wearing a
rainbow-colored shirt with the message
Love Will Win.
The Republican Party is the party of
individual rights and equality for all before
the law, all, Geller said. No special rights
or special classes. Democrats exploit the
gay cause for their own ends. Were the

real deal. We oppose jihad terror. What
greater threat to the gay community is
there than Islamic law?
Geert Wilders, a leader of the
conservative Dutch Party for Freedom,
warned
against
allowing
Muslim
immigration to the United States, saying
that the practice has led Europe down a
dismal path and violence on the continent.
There is only one Islam, and that Islam
has no place in a free society because
it goes against freedom, Wilders said.
So we should close our borders for
immigrants from Islamic countries. We
should not let any jihadists returning
to our free countries. We should expel
criminals with a double-nationality after
we have stripped them of the nationality
of our country. We should stop the
Islamizaton, as a matter of fact, we
should de-Islamize our societies.
To a smattering of applause among
attendees, Wilders said he doesnt want
any more mosques in the Netherlands or
Islamic schools for young children that
we want to integrate into society who
learn hate and violence.
Outside the event, a dozen protesters
carried a banner reading, Queers Against
Racism. Although no individual among
the protesters was willing to speak with
the Washington Blade, they handed the
press a slip of paper explaining their views.
Theres
nothing
fabulous
about
racism, the paper says. Our grief is not
a catalyst for xenophobia. We will not be
opportunistically used to promote Trumps
rhetoric of hate. What happened in Orlando
is a result of a homegrown culture of
homophobia promoted by Trump, Pence
and conservatives for decades.

As the Baltimore Pride parade winds down and the block party begins on
Saturday afternoon, there will be a special area set aside specically for LGBT
youth. This area, which had previously been known as the Youth Zone, is now
called Youth Pride and will take place beginning at 4 p.m. at Charles and Read
Streets.
Youth Pride is co-sponsored by the GLBT Community Center of Baltimore
(GLCCB) and STAR TRACK (Special Teens At-Risk Together Reaching Access, Care,
& Knowledge) and is the culmination of other youth-focused events during the
week leading up to Pride.
Every year over the past six years, STAR TRACK has planned youth and young
adult specic events during the week of Baltimore Pride, providing a safe space
to connect, have a good time and celebrate our communities, M. Blair Franklin,
HIV prevention program manager at STAR TRACK, told the Blade. This year
events included a Gay Skate, our Annual Ball, and a panel discussion from the
black and Latinx communities about the impact of the Orlando shootings at
Pulse, and of course, Baltimore Youth Pride.
STAR TRACK has been serving the Baltimores LGBTQ youth and young adults,
ages 12 to 26, since 1989 by oering outreach, education and prevention
services to youth, young adults, and their communities. Activities include health
education programs, peer trainings, teen leadership events, prevention services
(individual and group), health promotion campaigns, an HIV prevention hotline,
free and anonymous HIV testing services, an interactive teen health website, and
community mobilization.
The STAR TRACK Adolescent Health Program at the University of Maryland
Baltimore has worked with the LGBTQ community since its inception to provide
safe and client-centered comprehensive healthcare to young people, Jamal
Hailey, director of programs, told the Blade. STAR TRACK made a commitment
long ago to keep the needs of the LGBTQ community at the forefront of our work
and has consistently employed members from the community as a part of our
eorts.

WASHINGTON A new CDC study nds that the use of injection drugs contributes to
higher HIV rates for gay and bi male teens in the U.S. as opposed to riskier sexual practices
compared to their straight counterparts, STAT, a health publication, reports.
Researchers found no signicant dierences in the number of sexually active teens,
condom use or partner number between males of dierent sexual orientations. However,
gay and bisexual male teenagers were more than ve times more likely to use injected
drugs. Because this is the rst time those questions were asked, theres no way to know
the way sexual activity and drug use have been changing over time, STAT reports.
Men who have sex with men are 57 times more likely to be diagnosed with HIV than
straight men. The questions were included in the National Youth Risk Behavior Survey last
year, administered to high school students.
We were most surprised and concerned about the very high rates of injected drug use,
which are further compounding their risk for HIV infection, said Laura Kann, chief of the
School-Based Surveillance Branch within CDCs Division of Adolescent and School Health.
The ndings were presented last week at the International AIDS Conference in Durban,
South Africa, STAT reports.
Gay and bisexual male teens were also more likely to abuse other controlled
substances, including prescription drugs.
Despite the increased drug usage, Kann said most HIV infections in male teens who
have sex with men occur during sex, STAT reports.
Walgreens to distribute LGBT health guide

LONDON A new LGBT resource guide on how to treat LGBT customers is being
distributed at Walgreens stores, the largest drugstore chain in the U.S., Gay Star News
reports. About 70,000 copies of the booklet, produced in partnership with Human Rights
Campaign, are being distributed.
The guide contains information on LGBT terminology and identities and the health
disparities experienced by LGBT people.
There are also section related to transition services and hormone therapy for trans
people, HIV medication and PrEP. There is also advice on creating an inclusive and
welcoming pharmacy environment.
LGBT people are 68 percent more likely to smoke cigarettes; and are 2.5 times more
likely to suer from depression and anxiety, HRC reports.
With almost 8,200 drugstores nationwide, touching the lives of eight million customers

Order First If you dont take in anything else away from what I say, make
sure to remember this one. Always order rst! We are creatures who are highly
inuenced by what others do around us. Studies have shown that if the rst
person orders something unhealthy, then the rest of the party is likely to
do the same.
On the ip side, if the rst person orders healthier or skips an alcoholic drink,
the rest of the table is more likely to join the health train and fall in line. If youre
going to eat out, dont be polite and let the others inuence your decision, get
out there be bossy and order. Your mid section will thank you.
Starters Please Eating an appetizermay seem counterintuitive if you want
to eat less and cut calories, but having a healthy appetizer like a salad or soup
can actually help you to curb your appetite. Choosing an appetizer can help you
to eat fewer calories in the entree portion of your meal, which tend to carry to
most caloric-dense parts of the feast.
The second thing that having an appetizer can do is help you to make a better
decision on what your main course will be. A little trick I use is to eat my appetizer
before even ordering my main meal because I nd that I order healthier foods
once my body is partially satised.
No Starch, No Problem Sometimes the worst thing on your plate isnt your
main dish but the sides that come with it. An easy way to cut extra calories and
extra carbohydrates is to replace the normal starchy sides that come with a dish
with a vegetable option.
Now lets be clear when we talk about starchy sides we mean potato, rice or
pasta and we want to replace them with green veggies like side salads, broccoli
or kale. A simple switch like this can save you upwards of 400 calories while
allowing you to still indulge in your favoriterestaurantfoods.
Protein rst please At this point most of us know that having protein in
our diet is important for building muscles and recovering from our workouts,
but many dont know that it can also help you to make your meals healthier. A
recent study showed that by eating the protein portion of your meal before your
carbohydrates, that your blood sugar levels would not rise as high.
This is important because the higher your blood sugar level goes the more
prone you are to store fat in the body. Next time youre out to eat, if you cant
avoid the carbs, make sure you eat them last.

Trump, Pence a scary combination

Indiana guv has long record
hostile to gays, women

Once the Republican Party platform

with its intent to return us to the Dark Ages
became public, no one should have been
surprised that Donald Trump chose Gov.
Mike Pence as his running mate. Pence, a
Tea Party stalwart, doesnt believe climate
change is real, believes women and the
LGBT community should have no rights and
that white straight evangelical men should
control the world. Trump attacks Mexicans,
Muslims, Jews and women and revels in being a sexist, misogynistic, racist bully.
I rst learned about Pence from good
friend former Congressman Phil Sharp
(D-Ind.) elected in 1974 who served 20
years before retiring in 1995. Pence ran
against him twice, losing in 1988 and
1990. The people in Indianas 10th Dis-
trict clearly recognized class and decency

of which Pence had neither. The Washington Post reported, In one 1990 campaign
commercial Pence hired an actor to play
an Arab man, dressed in stereotypical
garb, who theatrically thanked Mr. Sharp
for American dependency on foreign oil.
Pence allegedly used campaign money to
pay his mortgage and credit card bills. He
eventually published an apology, Confessions of a Negative Campaigner, quoting
from the Bible about Jesus and sin. Sharp
shared his opinion of Pence saying, To
me, neither he nor Trump are of presidential timber. This sounds like Phil who
tells the story of his staer saying about
him, Phil could never go for the jugular
but rather goes for the capillaries.
My view is Pence thinks quoting the Bible excuses his basic lack of decency. He
doesnt apologize for his continuing denigration of women and the LGBT community a perfect match for Trump.
In 2015, Pence supported closing the
government to defund Planned Parenthood supporting legislation, co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Dan Coats, (R-Ind.), barring Medicaid patients from obtaining any
health services, such as disease testing or
cancer screening, at all Planned Parenthood facilities, even those that dont oer
abortion services. Pence swears hes all
about small government. But he signed

one of the most restrictive anti-abortion

laws in the nation, requiring women who
have an abortion or a miscarriage to have
a funeral for the fetus.
In 2000, Pence stated, Congress should
oppose any eort to recognize homosexuals as a discreet and insular minority
entitled to the protection of anti-discrimination laws similar to those extended to
women and ethnic minorities. He called
for an audit to ensure that federal dollars were no longer being given to organizations that celebrate and encourage
the types of behaviors that facilitate the
spreading of the HIV virus and instead
advocated that resources be directed towards conversion therapy programs.
Pence opposes both same-sex marriage and civil unions. While in the House,
he said societal collapse was always
brought about following an advent of the
deterioration of marriage and family. He
has advocated a constitutional same-sex
marriage ban. Then continuing attacks
on the LGBT community on March 26,
2015, Pence signed Indiana Senate Bill
101, also known as the Indiana religious
objections bill (RFRA), into law. The laws
signing was met with widespread criticism as it would permit discrimination
against LGBT people. Organizations like
the NCAA, the gamer convention Gen
Con, and the Disciples of Christ spoke out
against the law.
His nastiness was also evident when after the Supreme Court upheld the Aordable Care Act on June 28, 2012, Pence, in
a closed-door meeting, said, the ruling
upholding the health care law was similar
to the September 11th terrorist attacks.
It was reported, He also tried to start a
state-run, taxpayer-funded news service
to compete with local news outlets. Just
IN is what his sta called it. Everyone else
called it Pravda on the Plains. Its the kind
of thinking that pairs nicely with Trumps
tendency to throw temper tantrums and
revoke media credentials.
We have never had a clearer choice
than in this presidential election. We can
elect a president who thinks he will be
Emperor and a vice president who would
deny everyones civil and human rights.
Or we can elect Hillary Clinton whose
experience and decency will lead us to a
better future. Watching Pence suck up to
an arrogant Trump on 60 Minutes last
Sunday, and then the Republican National Convention would all be laughable if it
werent so scary. Lets hope this Trump/
Pence alliance and arranged marriage is
made in heaven for Democrats.

LGBT people a natural ally of Black Lives Matter

We have our own history of
abuse at hands of police
KATHI WOLFE, a writer and poet, is a regular

Things fall apart; the centre cannot

hold; the poet W.B. Yeats wrote in his
poem The Second Coming.
Yeats words seem eerily true as the
horric news keeps coming in. Just out of
Pride season, the world seems full not of
promise or love but of hate.
As I write, protesters, from the left and
right some carrying guns are arriving in Cleveland on the rst day of the Republican National Convention. On July 17,
Gavin Long, a black veteran, killed three
police ocers and wounded three others
in Baton Rouge, La. Days earlier, Micah

Johnson, another African-American veteran, fatally shot ve police ocers and
wounded nine others. Montrell Jackson,
one of the police ocers killed in the Baton Rouge shooting, was African American. Gay Latino police ocer Jesus Retana was among those injured in the Dallas
shooting. The shootings appear to have
been a (deranged) response to the recent
brutal police shootings of black men Philando Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge. To add to the toxic
mix, there is conict between some in the
queer community and Black Lives Matter.
Like everyone, white, black, brown,
queer or hetero, Im angry, sad and struggling to process this horror. How do we
move forward with any hope in this despairing moment?
Recently, in Union Station in D.C., a
police ocer noticed that I couldnt nd
where to board the train to Baltimore.
(Im legally blind.) The ocer not only
gave me directions, but bought me a cup
of coee. I was thankful for his kindness.
But I couldnt help but wonder how he
would have treated me if Id been black,
trans or homeless.
The queer community historically has
been harassed by police. The Stonewall
riots, considered the start of the modern queer rights movement, were a response to a police raid on the bar. In the
1950s, gay men were arrested for looking too feminine and queer women were
stopped by police for looking too masculine. Today, queer people, especially, of
color and trans, continue to be unfairly
treated by (some) police. Discrimination and harassment by law enforcement
based on sexual orientation and gender
identity is an ongoing and pervasive problem in LGBT communities, according to a
2015 Williams Institute report.
Given the unjust way that police have
often treated LGBT people, its hard to
understand why some in our community dont support Black Lives Matter. I
wouldnt presume to speak for people of
color or to say I know what its like to be
black and racially proled by a police ocer. I dont have kids, but if I did I wouldnt
have to have the talk that African-American parents have to have with their kids
about interacting with law enforcement.
Talking honestly about racism and police

shootings is incredibly dicult. I have no
ready words to oer. Yet, having endured
raids, abuse and mistreatment by the police throughout our history, I cant help
but wonder: how can anyone whos queer
not try to be an ally with people of color,
hetero and LGBT, who encounter racial
disparities from law enforcement?
Meanwhile, the shootings of police ofcers in Dallas and Baton Rouge are beyond contempt. Many good people, gay
and hetero, are cops. Especially after
Orlando, Im grateful for the police who
work hard to protect our community.
The movement began as a call to end
violence, DeRay Mckesson, a Black Lives
leader told the New York Times, that call
remains.
I cant imagine how hard it is to be a
police ocer, doing his or her job, when
so many distrust, or even hate, the police. In uniform I get nasty hateful looks
and out of uniform some consider me a
threat, Jackson wrote on Facebook shortly before his death.
To move beyond despair, we must
work to stop the violence and the hate.

How to talk to gay Republicans

Sorry, but theyre just not
that into us

Last week, at where Im guessing was

the banquet room of an airport Holiday
Inn, the Republican Party passed the most
anti-gay platform in its history. The GOP
doubled down on practically everything
gay out there. Gay marriage? Still hating
on it. Conversion therapy? Still rooting for
it. Trans people using the bathroom? Not
on their watch.
So, with it clearer than ever that the
Grand Old Party just wants absolutely
nothing to do with us, how do we go
about breaking the news to the gay Republicans out there that, essentially, hes
just not that into you? And how do you
even go about talking to gay Republicans
about their politics?
I put it out there on social media. One

reader wondered, How can you have a
meaningful conversation with the bathroom stall in the way? Another said simply when it comes to approaching gay Republicans, just dont. I even advocated
going in with a soft, but direct approach,
such as whats your f#^ing problem?
Nevertheless, I grabbed my gay Republican friend Michael and sat down for a
chat. Hes from South Carolina. If gay Republicans were a state, it would be that
one, with its charm, grace and seersucker
realness.
My only real question for him was how
do you pretend to be part of a party that
wants nothing to do with you? Essentially,
is tax policy so important to you that you
will put up with people that actually think
you are going to hell?
Michael, like so many other gay Republicans, arent quite ready to abandon
ship. He sees a party in desperate need
of rebuilding and rebranding and after
the sure-to-be-shellacking ahead this November, that moment may come sooner
rather than later. He reminded me that
politics is indeed a game of addition, but
the modern GOP, with harsh and hateful
tones on everything from immigration
to social issues, has only been playing a
political game of subtraction. That game

simply cannot sustain itself and another
presidential loss this November, making
this six out of the last seven in the loss
column, would certainly trigger a regrouping.
We can hope.
Other gay GOP friends talked about
how they feel stuck with a label that
means something very dierent now
than it meant even just a few years ago.
A friend currently on the Hill tells me he
feels like he made a bad bet 10 years ago,
wagering that gay marriage would win,
and the party would come around, among
other wishful thoughts. He reminded me
that he has real reasons for being a conservative and that being raised that way is
just one of them. He could certainly come
around, if only the party was willing to.
History tells us that its always dangerous to surround yourself only with those
that agree with you (see: fraternities, the
Third Reich). Gay Republicans exhibit
a certain admirable willingness to sit in
the same room with the Mike Huckabees
and James Dobsons of the party, challenging them on their views and providing some, albeit small, counterbalance
to their vitriolic anti-gay discourse. I did
admire the lesbian delegate to the GOP
national convention, D.C.s Rachel Ho,

when she openly challenged her colleagues to start a thoughtful conversation on gay marriage. With tears in her
eyes, Ho explained that, were your
daughters, your sons, your neighbors,
colleagues, and the couples you sit next
to you in church.
No matter how small, stances such as
those take tremendous courage, or as my
South Carolina friend put it, balls as big
as church bells.
Watching the convention unfold this
week, there is a noticeable absence of
party elders. Instead of past presidents
and noteworthy statesmen, were being
treated to has-been soap stars and former underwear models. This illustrates
more than anything the apparent rift in a
party that may be approaching its rockbottom moment. And while we are quick
to acknowledge the hypocrisy of gay republicanism given current social stances
of the GOP, we should all hope they have
a loud and strong voice at the table. As
a community, we are well served if their
voice can help center the party as it rebuilds.
Again, we can hope. So how do you talk
to gay Republicans? Maybe at this point,
start with, hang in there.

seen in the U.S. a cirque variety show featuring a 35,000-gallon water tank stage
and performers from around the world. The 2016 season is going very well for

USELESS DUO RETURNS FOR CHAOS OF DRINK AND CIGARETTES

Sweetie, darling. Theyre back.

Twenty-four years after the television
series rst aired and four years after the
last television special, Edina Monson and
Patsy Stone and the rest of the Absolutely
Fabulous family are back. But this time,
theyre on the big screen for Absolutely
Fabulous: the Movie.
It opens Friday, July 22 at local theaters
including Landmark E Street Cinema, Bethesda
Row, the Angelika Mosaic and the AFI Silver.
Fandango (fandango.com) has details.
And as the ladies will tell you, their
schemes and their costumes are bigger
and better than ever.
For any poor souls who may not have
caught the television series on the BBC or
Comedy Central, Jennifer Saunders, who writes
the scripts and plays Edina, oered a quick
description of the pair in a recent interview:
Theyre utterly useless, she said. Theyre
inseparable friends and they walk in chaos.
Joanna Lumley, who plays Patsy,
chimes in, a chaos of drink and cigarettes
and Champagne.
And, Saunders adds, a few illegal
substances. And generally in very bad shoes.

Then and now, Eddy (the short,
frazzled brunette) runs a small public
relations rm. Shes surrounded by her
exasperating and exasperated extended
family:
straight-laced,
long-suering
daughter Say (Julia Sawalha); slightly
befuddled but wickedly funny Mother
(June Whiteld); and, exceedingly eccentric
assistant Bubble (Jane Horrocks).
Patsy (the tall glamorous blonde) is an
editor for a fashion magazine and her
career has remained miraculously intact.
In fact, Saunders notes, actually, Patsy
doesnt change at all. Shes just sort of
embalmed and remains exactly the same.
Eddy, on the other hand, she says, has
gotten older and fatter. When the movie
opens, shes acquired a granddaughter
named Lola (played by newcomer
Indevarna Donaldson-Holness). Shes
broke and her business is oundering.
Her only remaining clients are a boutique
vodka and 60s pop icon Lulu (playing
herself), who refuses to sing her signature
song Shout as often as Eddy would like.
To rebuild her bank account, Eddy

decides to sell her memoirs. When that
plan spectacularly fails, she decides to
enlist fashion model Kate Moss as a
client. She crashes a launch party hosted
by Patsys magazine and rushes to greet
the supermodel. Unfortunately, she
accidentally pushes Moss into the Thames.
Hounded by the paparazzi and the
police (including Says new boyfriend
Nick, played by British comedian Robert
Webb), the pair ees to the French Riviera
for more Champagne and hijinks.
Saunders wrote the movie script for her
co-star and her long-time writing partner
Dawn French (The Vicar of Dilby).
I write it to amuse Joanna, really,
Saunders says. I think if you wrote it with
too many people, too many audiences in
mind, youd die of the pressure.
Yet she hopes the movie will appeal to
both fans of the original and newcomers.
I just basically write what I think will
be funny, and what I wanted is if people
could see this lm, and not have known
the series and still enjoy it, but that it
would also satisfy people that knew the

series extremely well.
The script only got written when
Saunders made a bet with her long-time
friend and collaborator, French. On their
2013 Christmas show, Saunders made
the resolution to nally write the script.
Knowing that Saunders is a legendary
procrastinator, French said that Saunders
would have to pay her 10,000 if the
script wasnt completed in a year.
True to form, Saunders delayed writing.
When their 2014 Christmas show aired,
she handed French a fake manuscript:
30 pages of actual dialogue and 60 pages
that literally said blah, blah, blah over
and over. An amused French caught on
to the joke, so Saunders was forced to
nish the script by New Years Day. She
even gave the fake manuscript a brilliant
cameo in the movie.
Saunders is delighted and moved by the
enduring popularity of her outrageous
characters.

I had no doubts about my identity
and have always enjoyed a supportive
network of friends and family. Luckily for

Its all Pride all the time this weekend in Baltimore with a jam-packed
events schedule.
On Friday, July 22, Baltimore TransUprising meets at Red Emmas, Star
Track presents Intergalactic Space Travelers, Twilight on the Terrace is
at Gertrudes, theres a Kings & Queens of Pride event at Hard Rock Cafe,
Guerilla Wordfare is at Single Carrot Theatre, Lust (a leather/fetish party) is
at Grand Central and more.
The parade is at 2 p.m. Saturday with a block party held at Charles and
Eager streets from 3-10 p.m. An after-party starts at 9 p.m. at Grand Central.
Several events, including a high-heel race at 1:30 p.m., will bookend the
parade and block party.

you most passionate about?
Urban education, particularly urban
math education. Equipping tomorrows
leaders who are from disadvantaged
neighborhoods or have scarce access
to resources with the condence
and accuracy needed to excel at
mathematical sciences.
What historical outcome

would you change?
I think wed all be better if American
slavery and colonization never happened
and America found a way to build itself
rather than on the backs of slaves. The
eects of brutalization on black and
brown people are still very much present
today. I hope that one day America
recovers from the nasty disease of
racism.
Whats been the most memorable pop

culture moment of your lifetime?
Recently, Beyonces Lemonade
premiere on HBO was a moment my
friends and I will never forget. But who
could forget when Kelly Clarkson won
American Idol, or when we learned
about the death of Aaliyah, Michael
Jackson or Whitney Houston? Those
were three artists that dened my
childhood.
On what do you insist?

Kindness and respect for all things until
it is no longer deserved.

Singer and actress Demi Lovato is
a strong supporter of LGBT rights.
She played a lesbian character on
Foxs Glee, served as grand marshal of
the Los Angeles Pride Parade this year
and has spoken openly about her
grandfathers
homosexuality.
Shes
also partnered with the Human Rights
Campaign on the Americans for Marriage
Equality campaign, which supports
marriage equality.
Well, I think rst of all, for me, my
connection with the gay community
the LGBT community Ive always kind
of been kind of like an outsider when
I lived in Texas, Lovato says. I never
t it and I didnt agree with a lot of the
opinions down in the South, and when I
got out to California, I just saw a whole
new world and I thought I have no idea
why this isnt like the rest of the U.S., and
the rest of the world, to be honest. So, Im
just standing up for whats right and thats
my connection with it.
On July 26, Lovato and touring partner
Nick Jonas head to the Verizon Center as
part of their Honda Civic Tour: Future
Now, in support of Lovatos newest
album, Condent and Jonas latest

release, Stone Cold.
Never afraid to speak her mind, earlier
this year Lovato appeared at the Billboard
Music Awards wearing a mesh shirt with
a symbol thats come to represent trans
people in the ongoing ght for trans
legal protections (and the oppositions
obsession with bathrooms).
I feel like, for me, I want to use my
voice to make a dierence in the world,
Lovato says. Theres so much more to my
voice than just singing and I learned that
at a young age. I had a moment where I
just thought, You know I want to do so
much more than just sing, and I grew up
with people that were judged for being
gay and I never understood it.
Lovato and Jonas even decided to
cancel their performances in North
Carolina in support of these beliefs.
I think that Demi and I felt it to be
really important and its a tough call to
make, Jonas says. We obviously feel
disappointment ourselves knowing that
our fans that were looking forward to the
show were disappointed but there are
these moments when something is as
important to you as this issue was and is,
where you kind of have to make a strong
stand and hope that your fans unify
with you and do their best to make that
change and see positive outcomes. But it
is just an overall disappointing situation
and hopefully there are artists that are

always willing to make bold choices to
stand for what they believe in.
Lovato agrees.
I think that anything that you do, you
need to do it to the max and if you can
make a dierence by, for instance, with
the Billboard Awards, I knew that this was
an issue that we had been dealing with,
with the cancellation of the shows, she
says. I wanted to make an impact and I
wanted to make a statement that said,
Hey, listen, I hear you, Im really sorry to
the fans that are going to miss the show
but this is an important issue to me and
I want to speak out and I want to use my
music to do it. I think its important for
artists to remember that they can use
their platform for the better.
Although Lovato and Jonas are proud
of their Disney pasts she from the
show Sonny With a Chance, he from
Jonas L.A. and both from the Camp
Rock movies both have seen their
music transform from Disney Radio to
more adult mainstream.
Demi is pushing me to get more
vulnerable in my music with this next
record and encouraging me to really open
up about some things that happened in
my life that I think will help people get
even more connected to me, Jonas says.
Those moments among friends and
creative relationships are so important
because I think they really shape not only

your next steps but the way the world
sees you as well which is key in making a
transition from a youthful career to what
hopefully is a long-lasting adult tour.
Lovato feels the transition was a little
easier for her due to the press about her
rehab and problems she encountered
through the years.
I kind of grew up really fast in the public
eye in that way and so when it was time to
release my music, I think people looked
at me dierently, she says. I wanted
to prove to people that I wasnt just a
stereotypical Hollywood starlet that goes
to rehab and falls back into the trap of
the things that got her there. I wanted to
make sure that the music that I made was
great and that I was passionate about the
music that I put out and I sang my heart
out and I also wanted to continue the
message of using my platform for more
things than just singing about heartbreak.
Thats what music is for, is getting you
through times, but also using it to
inspire people.

concoctions to beat the heat

Mother Nature was kind to us for a
little while this summer, but she has
apparently gotten over it. Hello, humidity.
While every bartender in town is busy
mixing up cooling libations from umbrellatopped tiki drinks to D.C.s own Gin Rickey,
sometimes its just too darn hot to leave
the house. So go ahead, stock up the
home bar and ll the ice cube trays. Drinks
are denitely on the house tonight.
Kalimotxo: Red wine mixed with
Coca Cola? This years Smithsonian
Folklife Festival featured the cuisine of
the Basque region, which straddles the
border between Spain and France near
the Atlantic Ocean. The food is typied
by fresh seafood, cured meats, salt cod,
Espelette peppers, apple cider and
a perfectly refreshing cocktail called a
Kalimotxo (apparently the Basque like
to pepper their language with the oddly-
placed x whenever they can; the tx is

pronounced ch.) and its surprisingly
delicious, almost like a zzy Sangria. To
make it, ll a glass with ice, add equal
parts of dry red wine and cola, then
garnish with a wedge of fresh lemon.
Pineapple Daiquiri: The recently
opened RPM Italian (601 Massachusetts
Ave., N.W.) has a signature drink called
the National, a pineapple-based version
of a classic Hemingway Daiquiri created
by beverage director Julian Cox. Its
fruity, rummy and decidedly summery
perfect for quang on the front porch
on a hot summer night. To recreate the
silky mouthfeel of Coxs creation, youll
want to make your own pineapple juice
by pureing fresh pineapple in a blender
and then straining it through a ne-mesh
sieve to remove the solids. Put 1.5 ounces
of dry rum with 1 ounce of pineapple
juice and 3/4 ounce of fresh lime juice
in a shaker lled with ice, then add 1/2
ounce each of simple syrup and apricot
liqueur. Shake vigorously, then strain into
a chilled coupe glass.
The Salty Dog: When youre sweating
from the heat, your body is crying out

to replace all that salt, right? Enter the
Salty Dog, which clearly was meant to be
a healthy drink, not just a cocktail. The
premise is simple: mix 2 ounces of vodka
or gin over ice in a cocktail shaker with
4 ounces of freshly squeezed grapefruit
juice its worth the eort to juice that
grapefruit. Take a rocks glass, moisten
the rim with some of the fresh grapefruit
peel, then dip the rim in coarse salt, as
you would for a margarita. Pour the
contents of the shaker into the glass and
garnish with a slice of fresh grapefruit.
Tom Collins: Back in the 1980s, there
was nothing better than sidling up to the
bar with your fake ID nervously clutched
in your sweaty hand and oh-so-casually
asking for the most sophisticated drink
you could think of: the Tom Collins. Since
reaching legal age, you may have gone
on to imbibe fancier concoctions, but
the vintage charm of the Tom Collins
cannot be denied, a grown-up version of
an ice-cold lemonade. Mix 2 ounces of
gin, 1 ounce of freshly squeezed lemon
juice, and 1/2 ounce of simple syrup
in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake

thoroughly. Strain into a tall glass lled
with ice, top with chilled club soda, stir
and garnish with a lemon wheel. Add a
splash of limoncello for a little extra air.
Watermelon Agua Fresca: A common
thirst quencher found all across Mexico,
watermelon agua fresca lends itself
perfectly to summer cocktails and is
particularly good with the addition of silver
tequila. While agua fresca is typically made
with sugar, watermelon is so naturally
sweet that it usually doesnt require any
additional sweetener. Put a cup of cubed
fresh watermelon in a blender with one
ounce of fresh lime juice, then pure and
strain through a ne-mesh sieve; chill for
an hour in the refrigerator. To make the
drink, ll a tall glass with ice, then add 1.5
ounces of silver tequila, 3 ounces of the
chilled watermelon juice, and stir briskly.
Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and a
lime wheel, then top with chilled Prosecco.

May 2013 was a life-changing month
for actor Frankie J. Alvarez, best known
for playing Agustn Lanuez on the HBO
drama Looking. He turned 30; he got
married to actress Leah Walsh; and, the
pilot of Looking was picked up by HBO.
On Saturday night, one of those
journeys will end. Looking: the Movie
will wrap up the loose ends that were
left dangling when the series was
unexpectedly cancelled after two seasons.
The two-hour series nale premieres July
23 at 10 p.m. on HBO.
For anyone who needs a refresher,
Looking follows the romantic and
professional lives of three gay men in
San Francisco. Patrick (Jonathan Gro)
is a video game designer. Dom (Murray
Bartlett) wants to open a restaurant.
Theyre the nice guys.
Agustn is the mean guy. As Alvarez is

the rst to admit, Agustn was often the
character that fans loved to hate, especially
in season one. As the series started,
Agustn is a frustrated artist in a shaky
relationship with Frank (O.T. Fagbenle). He
relies on sarcasm, sex, drugs and alcohol
to get by, but he quickly spirals out of
control and loses his boyfriend and his job
as an artists assistant, and alienates his
friends. When season two opens, Frankie
is found passed out on the sidewalk and
has to be carried home.
The rst season was dicult, Alvarez
says. I always want to play a guy whos
furthest from me as possible. I like to see
what similarities I have and build a bridge
with my imagination the rest of the way.
It couldnt get any further away from me
than Agustn. It really excited me.
Alvarez realized early on that his
character was not a fan favorite.
People hated Agustn, Alvarez says, but I
dont think anyone hated Agustn more than
Agustn himself. Theres a lot of self-loathing
there, and a lot of fear of failure. Instead of
owning it, he lashes out at his friends. By the
end of that rst season, he reaps what he
sows. Coming into season two, hes much

more aware of his destructive eect on his
relationships and he starts to make amends.
Its a learning curve for him and he applies
it to his courtship of (season two romantic
interest) Eddie.
Alvarez credits the writing sta with the
character arc.
I am grateful to the entire writing sta
who crafted this arc with such nuance
and such care for the character. I think
it was always in their minds that he was
going to start in a ippant place and that
he would grow and learn and evolve. I just
feel incredibly blessed that I was given
this journey to go on.
Another challenge for the straight
actor was lming the gay sex scenes. The
challenge, he says, had more to do with
his lack of screen experience than with
the sex of his on-screen partner.
I havent had a sexual situation with
a woman onscreen yet, so well have to
have this conversation at a dierent time.
I have no basis for comparison. This is
my rst big TV role and it just happened
to be a gay role, so I approached it with
the same kind of curiosity and excitement
as I would if my co-star were a woman. I

wanted Agustn to feel as authentic and
real as possible. If people are surprised
by my sexual orientation in real life, then
Ive done my job right.
As for what happens to his character
in the movie, Alvarez is sworn to secrecy.
This fall, Alvarez will return to his theatrical
roots. Hes headed to the McCarter Theatre
in Princeton, N.J., where he will appear in the
world premiere of Bathing In Moonlight
by Nilo Cruz, the openly gay playwright
who won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for his play
Anna In The Tropics. Alvarez is playing
Tabiano, the gay son who comes back into
town to cause trouble for his extended
Cuban-American family.
In the meantime, Alvarez will be doing
publicity for Looking: the Movie. Alvarez
has been moved and supported by the
support of the shows devoted fan base.
When you have a big experience like
this and then the rug gets pulled out
from under you, you kinda feel alone. I
took solace in how the fans lamented the
loss of the show as much as we did as a
cast. It made me feel that we were doing
something right.

decent picture.
He taught you how to tie a tie, too.
Because of him, you know how to create
a good meal out of almost nothing, how
to keep a car running and how to avoid
being a jerk. You know a lot of things,
thanks to the old man, but in the new
book In the Darkroom by Susan
Faludi, Dad doesnt show you everything.
On and o through most of her 40some years, Susan Faludi had been
estranged from her father. Even when he
was in the picture, she was wary of him,
a household despot, with a hair-trigger
temper and a penchant for violence.
She knew him, but not deeply, so when
she heard from her father for the rst
time in years, it was a surprise.
So was the message: her father had
become a woman.
He was born in Hungary in 1927, a
pampered son of well-to-do Jews who
sent him away as a child for reasons
Faludi could only surmise. Hed come
of age during the Nazi occupation and,
according to stories, had survived through
wits and bravery and had saved several
lives. Because of her fathers reticence
and tendency to embellish, though, Faludi
never knew if those stories told were true.
In September, 2004, she boarded a
plane to Hungary to meet her father, to
learn who she really was and to ll in the

blanks about her.
It was a prickly endeavor: never one to
be forthcoming about her history, Faludis
father dismissed most questions, refusing
to discuss them and was reluctant to show
Faludi any Budapest locales with familial
signicance. Father and daughter argued,
Faludi gently prodded, her father pushed
back, and she eventually gave Faludi
names and places, important (sometimes
falsied) documents, but scant insight.
For many reasons, Faludi learned, her
father was a damaged soul. Shed been
abandoned, misunderstood, terrorized
or had she been? Was Faludis father a
victim of all shed endured or was she an
extremely eective liar?
On the surface, In the Darkroom is a
bit of a struggle to read.
Its quite wordy, rst of all, and lled
with place names that may not mean
much to readers whove never been to
Hungary. I gave up trying to make sense
of locales, but theres no ignoring author
Susan Faludis recreation of her fathers
Hungarian accent. Its everywhere in the
text here and not so charming after a few
dozen pages.
And yet, what Faludi nds, what her
father admits, feels like a noir whodunit
with a dierent kind of victim. Theres
intrigue here, derring-do, a deep
mystery that still seems unsolved and a
protagonist whos ultimately worthy of
surprising sympathy.
That the psychological heart of
this book arrives like a strobe in a
photography studio, ash-ash-ash with
the overall picture remaining tantalizingly
fuzzy. In the end, I found that irresistible
tease was worth overlooking the irritations,
so go ahead. Start In the Darkroom, try
this story. See what develops.

Back in 1990, she says, we never

imagined in our wildest dreams we would
still be sitting here having done a lm of
that show. Its quite extraordinary, and
we feel very, very lucky.
She does note, however, that she had to
be more careful in her writing these days.
Quite a bit, to be honest, she says,
only because people are much more
ready to be oended these days. Also,
if you write a movie, you have a raft of
lawyers telling you who you can oend
and who you cant oend, and whos going
to sue you and who wont. So, it was quite
an issue, I have to say. It also makes
me a bit sad that, if anything, that people
seem to want to go back to an old model
of normality and sitcoms seem to want to
be about ordinary families and things that
arent very interesting. I just think its a bit
sad. Its a shame that life is still depicted in
a very straight way, I think.
Luckily, Patsy and Edina remain as
outrageous as ever, and on the big
screen theyre surrounded by dozens of
celebrities in delicious cameos. Superfan
Chris Colfer (Glee) plays Edinas
hairdresser Christopher and Rebel Wilson
(the Pitch Perfect movies) appears as
a rude ight attendant whos undone by
Patsys icy glare. There are cameos by
both Barry Humphries and Dame Edna
Everage, along with Jon Hamm, Graham
Norton, Joan Collins, Jerry Hall, Eddys
arch nemesis Stella McCartney, Jean Paul
Gaultier and, of course, Kate Moss.
Saunders was delighted by all the star
power her producers were able to wrangle.
You always end up with the people
who are available on the day and who
you love and who you know and who are
easygoing and happy, she says. We just
said look, Were having a party. Will you

come and be in it? Lots of people turned
up and were incredibly generous.
The Ab Fab production sta also
wrangled about 90 drag queens for a
fabulous scene set in Londons infamous
Royal Vauxhall Tavern, which oers the
best in alternative entertainment and has
been serving conrmed bachelors and
friends since long before Kylie was born.
The drag queens, including fashion icon
Jodie Harsh, Britains Got Talent nalist
La Voix, and several stars of RuPauls Drag
Race, help Say track down her missing
mother, but only after she has oered
a surprisingly moving rendition of At
Seventeen by lesbian icon Janis Ian.
Saunders oers some of the credit for
the ongoing appeal of the show to the
powerful friendship between the women.
I think as far as the characters go, they
live for each other, and they live a life they
dont apologize for, she says. They dont
need men. They dont need a relationship in
order to have fun and get on in the world.
Over the years, both Saunders and
Lumley have both been supporters of
the LGBT community. After all, they know
whom their fan base is.
Oh, its been our pleasure, actually. We
owe the gay community a huge deal, too,
because theyve helped make the show
popular and we love having them as fans.
On a lighter note, Lumley, who has
served as a judge at several Edina and
Patsy drag competitions, oers a few
pointers for anyone who wants to make
an appearance in Patsy Stone drag.
Shes very easy to copy because shes quite
tall, the former fashion model says. You just
want to get your good, yellow wig on. Lots of
lovely, red lips. Good stockings. Nice pair of
high heels. Glass of champers. Cigarette on
the go. Dark shades on. Youre there.

To buy or not when youre single

First home can turn into
wise long-term investment

Over the years, weve had many clients who wanted to buy a house when
single. They were well qualified, but they
couldnt pull the trigger. Sometimes, it
was with good reason an unstable job
or likely transfer out of the area, or simply
deciding that in order to buy, they might
have to sacrifice their ideal location and
lifestyle to make it work. These are logical
and common reasons that some of our
clients decide they would rather rent for
a little while longer as they iron out the
details of their lives.
But all too often, the fear of ownership is something else entirely. They
worry about how a purchase might affect
their relationship prospects. Some fear
that they might seem too intimidating
on dates if they owned their own home.
They might seem too independent or too
tied down if it is someone out of the area.
Others worry if they meet the person and
decide to marry or move in, they will then
have to quickly unload the property.
While all concerns when you are making a big financial purchase or life change
are valid, its important to remember that
buying a home doesnt define or limit
you. It simply adds to your investment
portfolio not to mention gives you a
bigger tax break come April 15.
For those of you who are worried about
buying a home while you are single, youre
not alone. Buying a home is a big decision

and one that should be considered carefully. Our advice is to make sure youre
being honest about why you may or may
not make decisions about buying. Buying
a home is a large financial investment,
one that pays off greatly over time for
most people. It gives them a head start
on their real estate investment portfolio
and often, the money they make on their
first home pays for the down payment
of their move-up home. Time and time
again, we have had clients that prove it
makes great financial and personal sense
to buy. If youre qualified to purchase a
home and are planning to live in the area
for the next couple of years, it almost always makes financial sense to buy.
In our office, we like to say nothing
looks sexier on a person than real estate
and its true.
So many of our clients have found the
one soon after purchasing their home.
In fact, in my first condo building, five
of the single residents who purchased
homes in the newly completed 13 unit
building were engaged or married within
two years of purchasing their first condo.
Some moved out and sold their unit,
some rented it out, while in others the
significant other moved in.
We have one client who purchased a
townhouse in her 20s and rented the extra
room to a roommate to pay down some
of the mortgage. In a few years, she was
making more money and was able to live
in the house by herself. Shortly after, she
met her future spouse and he moved in,
contributing again to her mortgage. Later,

and keep her original home as an investment property. Other clients have sold
their property and used the proceeds to
purchase a new home with their new significant other. There are so many options.
Of course, I cant guarantee that youll
meet the one in the elevator of your

sense of self worth and accomplishment
to go along with a fantastic new financial investment in your portfolio. And, of

course, you can decorate and customize
your new home however you want now
that you are no longer renting. Win, win!
