ENVIRONMENTALIMPACTANDFOSTERSTHE
USEOFCERTIFIEDWOOD
Nowadays,problemsrelatedtoenvironmentalimpactaffectallcountriesaround
theglobe,generatingstrongpublicopinionandpressurefromsocietyonboth
governmentsandbusinesstorethinktheirapproach.Thisisparticularlyevident
intheconstructionsectorwheresustainableconstructionpractisesareleadingto
areducedenvironmentalimpact.
Bearinginmindthat the integratedenergyneeded forbuildingconstructionto
construct buildings represents between 5 per cent and 10 per cent of global
carbonemissionsandthatenergyrequiredforbuildingheating,lighting,cooling,
andventilation ofbuildings accountsforaround40percentofglobalcarbon
emissions,theconstructionindustryandpolicymakershaverecognizedtheneed
toemploymaterialsandmethodsthataremoreefficientfromanenvironmental
standpoint.Woodcomparesfavourablywithothercommonlyusedconstruction
materialsinmanyoftheseenvironmentalindicators.
Inthiscontext,theForestStewardshipCouncil (FSC),theworld'sleading
organization in promoting responsible forest management through wood
certification,fosterstheuseofcertifiedwoodinarchitecturalprojectsensuring
the buildings meet with the highest standards of environmental responsibility
throughLEEDcertifications.
Inorderforabuildingtobeconsidereda "greenbuilding" itmustmeet with
certainrequirements,suchaslocation,energyandemissionsefficiency,water

UndercommitmentsmadebytheGreenBuildingCouncilsattheCOP21heldin
Paristowardstheendoflastyear,itwasannouncedthatinthecomingfiveyears
atotalof1.25billionsquaremetresofbuildingsshouldbecertifiedasgreen
buildings,leadingtoamajorriseinthistypeofconstructionsaroundtheworld.
RicardoSilvaSantisteban,anexecutiveinthesector,statesthattheinternational
consultancy firm, SUMAC, with extensive experience in sustainable projects
since2011,hasbeenengagedinalmost100LEEDcertifiedprojectsinPeru,with
Mexicoleadingthetrendintheregionwithover350ofthesetypesofprojects.
Inourcountry,thefirstsustainablebuildingtobecertifiedwithaLEEDPlatinum
LEEDcertificate,thehighestofitskind,istheCentroEmpresarialLeuro,located
in Miraflores. This building is characterized by its efficient use of natural
resources,reducingwaterconsumptionby39percentandwithenergysavingsof
upto14percent.Likewise,100percentofthewoodusedinitsconstructionis
FSC certified, ensuring it is sourced from environmentally and socially
responsibleymanagedforestsmanagement.
Furthermore, businesses are increasingly locating their offices in sustainable
buildings,sincethishasapositiveimpactontheircorporateimage.Currently,in

LatinAmerica,therearearound2.9millionworkersinenvironmentallycertified
buildingsandestimatesputthistotalat21millionbytheyear2030.
In this mannerway, FSC continues to contribute to environmental protection
throughraisingawarenessonthetopic.
