this hot new eld promises to revoluWonize industries from business to government, health care to

According to McKinsey Global InsWtutes research, by 2018 the United States will experience a shortage of
skilled data scienWsts, and 1.5 million managers and analysts capable of reaping acWonable insights from
the big data deluge.

Data scienWsts lead the pack for best jobs in America, according to a new report from company review site,
Glassdoor. According to the report, the median salary for a Data ScienWst is an impressive $116,000.

According to publicaWon in The Hindu* - The big data analyWcs segment would require three lakh skilled
professionals by 2020. The size of analyWcs segment is pegged at $1.5 billion with a projected CAGR
(compounded annual growth rate) of 20 per cent in the next ve years.

Data is opening new doors to the future hard challenges in areas as diverse as medicine,
business, media, and sports are being solved daily. Progress in these domains requires
individuals who understand the relevant engineering principles, but also have a passion for
how informaWon can be used to solve vexing puzzles.

We understand the need for value-added engineering programs and lead the way in
making life-long learning a reality for working engineers. Our collaboraWon with Northwest
on the Post Graduate Program in AnalyWcs is an example of this. By enrolling in this rigorous,

Dr. CYRUS SHAHABI

Program Faculty Director

Prof. CYRUS SHAHABI is a Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and
the Director of the InformaWon Laboratory (InfoLAB), Department of Computer Science at
the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. He is the Director of the InformaWcs Program at the
USC Viterbi School of Engineering. He is also the Director of the NSFs Integrated Media
Systems Center (IMSC) at the University of Southern California (USC). He was the CTO and
co-founder of a USC spin-o, Geosemble Technologies, which was acquired in July 2012.
Since then, he founded another company, ClearPath (recently rebranded as TallyGo),
focusing on predicWve path-planning for car navigaWon systems.
Dr. Shahabi has received funding from several agencies such as NSF, NIJ, NASA, NIH,
DARPA, AFRL, and DHS as well as several industries such as Chevron, Google, HP, Intel,
Microsop, NCR, NGC and Oracle. He is a fellow of IEEE, and a recipient of the ACM
DisWnguished ScienWst award in 2009, the 2003 U.S. PresidenWal Early Career Awards for
ScienWsts and Engineers (PECASE), the NSF CAREER award in 2002, and the 2001 Okawa
FoundaWon Research Grant for InformaWon and TelecommunicaWons. He was also a
recipient of the US Vietnam EducaWon FoundaWon (VEF) faculty fellowship award in 2011
and 2012.
He was an Associate Editor of IEEE TransacWons on Parallel and Distributed Systems (TPDS)
from 2004 to 2009, IEEE TransacWons on Knowledge and Data Engineering (TKDE) from
2010-2013 and VLDB Journal from 2009-2015. He is currently on the editorial board of the
ACM TransacWons on SpaWal Algorithms and Systems (TSAS) and ACM Computers in
Entertainment. He is the founding chair of IEEE NetDB workshop and also the general cochair of SSTD'15, ACM GIS 2007, 2008 and 2009. He is a PC co-Chair of BigComp'2016 and
MDM'2016. In the past, he has been PC co-chair of DASFAA 2015, IEEE MDM 2013 and
IEEE BigData 2013, and regularly serves on the program commihee of major conferences
such as VLDB, ACM SIGMOD, IEEE ICDE, ACM SIGKDD, IEEE ICDM, and ACM MulWmedia.
He received his B.S. in Computer Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in 1989
and then his M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees in Computer Science from the University of Southern
California in May 1993 and August 1996, respecWvely. He authored two books and more
than two hundred research papers in the areas of databases, GIS and mulWmedia with
more than 12 US Patents.

Once you have joined the USC PGPA, the
next step is to plan your career roadmap.
Early planning and commihed execuWon is
key to professional success.
Northwest career advancement services
provides personalized support to all
parWcipants of its programs (except
company sponsored parWcipants) to help
develop their career advancement strategy
and guidance for its execuWon.
Northwest works closely with program
parWcipants through a mulW-pronged
approach to ensure that they are well
prepared for their role of choice. This is
done through a dedicated senior industry
mentor who acts as an execuWve coach and
provides detailed feedback to parWcipant
on his/her prole, resume / CV and a
construcWve criWque on career plans. The
ExecuWve Coach also guides the parWcipant
towards development of a specic plan to
address the gaps as well as improve their
performance at workplace and in advancing
their career, within or outside the
organizaWon.
The Coaching process is not necessarily
aimed at immediate results but a carefully
planned transformaWon that helps
parWcipants build on their strengths and
improve on their development areas. Hence
it is required that parWcipants spend a
signicant Wme focusing on improving their
prole and addressing gaps, as part of the
program. The approach is as follows:
Prole Building: An iniWal workshop aims at
explaining the nuances of a good resume

and provides a ready format for parWcipants

to use to highlight their achievements. The
ExecuWve coach and the Northwest team
then work with the parWcipants to develop
and maintain their proles on acWve
networks such as LinkedIn.
P e r s o n a l D e v e l o p m e n t : We h e l p
parWcipants understand their blind spots
a n d a re a s fo r i m p ro v e m e n t . T h e
parWcipants are then open given one-onone coaching to help create a roadmap for
such improvement by the execuWve coach.
ParWcipants also get pointers on body
language, communicaWon as well as
presentaWon skills at various points during
the program.
Company SelecWon & ConnecWons:
ParWcipants work closely with Northwest
team to idenWfy the companies that
provide a best t with their aspiraWons and
career advancement plan. Together with
the ExecuWve Coach, they chart out a path
to create connecWons with the selected
companies, by using the network of
Northwest Founders, Faculty, Peers etc.
Interview PreparaWon: The Northwest team
and the ExecuWve Coach also conduct oneon-one interview pracWce sessions with
program parWcipants, focused on the type
of role, funcWonal area and industry. This is

The Program fee is USD 8,000 inclusive of
all taxes. It covers teaching fees, all
academic materials, lunches and select

You are responsible for full payment of
program fee as per the guidelines to conrm

routes below for paying the program fees.

Companies can support the internal career
advancement of their high potenWal
professionals by sponsoring them in the
program.
Companies interested in sponsoring their
high potenWal professionals and who want
to learn more about the program should
get in touch with Northwest ExecuWve

schedule a one-on-one discussion with
our program advisor.
You (the candidate) sWll have to pay the
program fee directly to Northwest. You
can arrange to claim reimbursement or
receive funding from your employer.
However, Northwest does not accept
direct payments from companies at this

LOANS
Financing by way of loans to pay the
program fees and incidental costs is available
to you through Credila (An HDFC Limited
company) at compeWWve interest rates.
Subject to your meeWng certain norms and
based on your credit score (CIBIL raWng),
loans of up to Rs. 12 lakhs may be availed.
Decisions on loan approval and collateral

requirements will be taken by the nancial

insWtuWon disbursing the loan at its sole
discreWon.
