OPERATIONAL PROCEDURE
Equipment Type

Surface Grinding Machine

Equipment Code

SG1

Location

Machine Shop Area

Operation Procedure:

1. Special training is required before using the surface grinder. Ask

the shop personnel to demonstrate the proper use of this tool.
2. The surface grinder shall not be operated without the
appropriate guards in place.
3. Stand to one side when starting a grinding machine. Damaged
wheels will sometimes fly apart, and this is most likely to happen
when the machine is being started. Stand to the side so that you
will not be in-line with the debris.
4. Do not grind on the side of the wheel unless the wheel is
specifically designed for such use.
5. Do not use excessive pressure while grinding. Do not exceed
.0005 inch downfeed at any time.
6. Report to the shop personnel immediately any cracked, broken
or otherwise defective wheels.
7. Hold work securely while grinding, use the tool rest to support
the work when off-hand grinding.
8. Do not grind aluminum. Aluminum dust is explosive. Check with
shop staff for safety instructions if aluminum must be ground.
9. Stop the machine immediately if odd noise or excessive vibration
occurs.
10. Do not leave the machine unattended. If you must leave, the
power must be shut off and the machine must come to a
complete stop.
11.

Whenever you observe an unsafe condition with the surface

grinder, report it immediately to the shop personnel.
