Phang Nga Achievement Report

15th April 2014

GVI Teaching Children project conducts summer English classes at the Community
Development Centre (CDC) in Baan Nam Khem

Summary
We are thrilled to continue working and developing our partnership with the Community
Development Centre (CDC) in Ban Nam Khem. During two weeks of April, GVI volunteers
and staff led two exciting English summer camps with Thai and Burmese children. Our
involvement in these activities has enabled us to work towards achieving our long term
goals including supporting our partner organizations with their activities, providing a high
standard of English education to the community and providing volunteers with teaching
skills and experience. This also supports the UN Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to
achieve universal primary education.

Report
Set up after the 2004 tsunami, the Community Development Centre (CDC) provides a safe
environment for up to 80 children in the Ban Muang area. The Centre provides free meals
for the children of poor families, full day school to allow the underprivileged children in the
area access to education, supplement the education of the Thai students, after-school child
care, English lessons, basic computer knowledge, and other skills development related
courses.

During the course of March of this year we have already taught 23 hours of English classes
for grades 3 to 9 with a total of 37 children. Already being familiar with these children and
with their previous classroom experience from these classes GVI staff and volunteers were
able to plan and deliver successful English lessons during the summer camps. GVI and CDC
worked together on coming up with the most interesting and useful topics.

In the first week volunteers taught 3 groups of Burmese children from beginner to
intermediate level. Each group included 13 children in total 39. During the second week we
were teaching 3 groups of Thai and Burmese children. The beginners level had 18 children,

the pre- intermediate level included 14 and the intermediate level comprised of 16
students. When the new school year starts in May, GVI aim to take over full teaching
responsibilities at the centre and possibility for a placement for future interns.

Burmese children in Thailand do not have access to the public education. CDC is the only
this type of organization in the region providing education for unprivileged children with no
other access to knowledge. By teaching at Centre GVI takes steps towards contributing to
the UN Millennium Development Goal of achieving universal primary education. It is too
early yet to notice any improvement from those lessons in childrens level of English. During
the up-coming school year, GVI will focus on monitoring and evaluating students progress
and GVIs teaching techniques. In the long term, we aim to increase the future prospects of
the children both in terms of education and employment.

Teaching at the CDC summer camps was so much fun. The kids were interested, interactive
and very eager to get involved into classroom activities and games. They were a pleasure to
teach and as a result I have gained a lot of new friends in our village Holly Briggs
