full of myriads, temptations, impediments and pitfalls often proves to be disheartening in such
situation, it is the able guidance of knowledgeable person that steers one through difficulties and
help them achieve success.

Overview of Indian Telecom Industry

The Indian telecom sector can be broadly classified into Fixed Line Telephony and mobile
telephony. The major players of the telecom sector are experiencing a fierce competition in both
the segments. The major players like BSNL, MTNL, VSNL in the fixed line and Airtel, Idea,
Tata, Reliance in the mobile segment are coming up with new tariffs and discount schemes to
gain the competitive advantage. The Public Players and the Private Players share the fixed line
and the mobile segments. Currently the Public Players have more than 60% of the market share.

Market shares of public and Private Players

Both fixed line and mobile segments serve the basic needs of local calls, long distance calls and
the international calls, with the provision of broadband services in the fixed line segment and
GPRS in the mobile arena. Traditional telephones have been replaced by the cordless and the
wireless instruments. Mobile phone providers have also come up with GPRS-enabled multimedia
messaging, Internet surfing, and mobile-commerce. . The GSM, CDMA, WLL service providers
are all upgrading them to provide 3G mobile services. Along with improvement in telecom
services, there is also an improvement in manufacturing. In the beginning, there were only the
Siemens handsets in India but now a whole series of new handsets, such as Nokia's latest Nseries, Sony Ericsson's W-series, Motorola's PDA phones, etc. have come up. Touch screen and
advanced technological handsets are gaining popularity. Radio services have also been
incorporated in the mobile handsets, along with other applications like high storage memory,
multimedia applications, multimedia games, MP3 Players, video generators, Camera's, etc.

History of Indian Telecom Industry

1851 First operational land lines were laid by the government near Calcutta (seat of British
power)
1881 Telephone service introduced in India
1883 Merger with the postal system
1923 Formation of Indian Radio Telegraph Company (IRT)
1932 Merger of ETC and IRT into the Indian Radio and Cable Communication Company
(IRCC)
1947 Nationalization of all foreign telecommunication companies to form the Posts, Telephone
and Telegraph (PTT), a monopoly run by the government's Ministry of Communications
1985 Department of Telecommunications (DOT) established, an exclusive provider of domestic
and long-distance service that would be its own regulator (separate from the postal system)
1986 Conversion of DOT into two wholly government-owned companies: the Videsh Sanchar
Nigam Limited (VSNL) for international telecommunications and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam
Limited (MTNL) for service in metropolitan areas.

1997Telecom Regulatory Authority of India created.

1999 Cellular Services are launched in India; New National Telecom Policy is
adopted.
2000 DOT becomes a corporation, BSNL

Constraints

Slow pace of the reform process.

It would be difficult to make in-roads into the semi-rural and rural areas because of the lack of
infrastructure. The service providers have to incur a huge initial fixed cost to make inroads into
this market. Achieving break-even under these circumstances may prove to be difficult
MOBILE TECHNOLOGY
In India two type of Mobile technology is used1. Global System For Mobile Communication( GSM)
2. Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)
GSM
GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) is a digital mobile telephony system that is
widely used in Europe and other parts of the world. GSM uses a variation of time division
multiple access (TDMA) and is the most widely used of the three digital wireless telephony
technologies (TDMA, GSM, and CDMA). GSM digitizes and compresses data, then sends it
down a channel with two other streams of user data, each in its own time slot. It operates at
either the 900 MHz or 1800 MHz frequency band.
Mobile services based on GSM technology were first launched in Finland in 1991. Today, more
than 690 mobile networks provide GSM services across 213 countries and GSM represents
82.4% of all global mobile connections. According to GSM World, there are now more than 2
billion GSM mobile phone users worldwide. GSM World references China as "the largest single
GSM market, with more than 370 million users, followed by Russia with 145 million, India with
83 million and the USA with 78 million users."

CDMA

CDMA (Code-Division Multiple Access) refers to any of several protocols used in so-called
second-generation (2G) and third-generation (3G) wireless communications. As the term implies,
CDMA is a form of multiplexing, which allows numerous signals to occupy a single
transmission channel, optimizing the use of available bandwidth. The technology is used in ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) cellular telephone systems in the 800-MHz and 1.9-GHz bands.
CDMA employs analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) in combination with spread spectrum
technology. Audio input is first digitized into binary elements. The frequency of the transmitted
signal is then made to vary according to a defined pattern (code), so it can be intercepted only by
a receiver whose frequency response is programmed with the same code, so it follows exactly
along with the transmitter frequency. There are trillions of possible a frequency-sequencing code,
which enhances privacy and makes cloning difficult.
